Not to mention the chance to not have a job where you've constantly got to evade angry interview questions about hardware failure rates, and the like, while maintaining your charming composure.

I told you EA gave him a big bag of cash! EA badly need to improve their popularity, because at the moment EA is somewhere between Hitler and the AIDS virus. If Pete can do it for Microsoft, maybe he can for EA.

Microsoft has a pretty solid compensation structure at the executive level. I imagine his total take would have been pretty similar if he had stayed at Microsoft over the two-year period. It probably wasn't about the money.

He's moving to the Bay Area though, Tiburon probably (where his family lived before during the Dreamcast days). If you took a look at the housing prices there, that bonus is actually probably going to cover only a third of whatever house he ends up buying.

More power to Mr. Moore.

There's a lot of grousing about his new compensation. While there's likely some reform that could be done across the board at the corporate executive level nationwide, this isn't like winning the lottery.

Executives at Moore's level work ridiculously hard, and arguably earn those sacks of cash. If they weren't working so insanely, we wouldn't be benefitting like we are with content, exclusives, and so on across the gaming industry.

Yes, housing is expensive in the bay, but I'm sure he will qualify for a big loan and afford a beautiful home.

Too bad the interest rates aren't what they were a few years ago.

Actually if he was smart, he never sold his previous home, it probably appreciated a small fortune by now.

You know, you really can't put a price on having family close by. I assume this guy probably has kids or grandkids he wouldn't mind seeing.

Another thing I thought of is that the 360, whether it "succeeds" or "fails" is already to a maturity point where his job wouldn't be as fun anymore. I mean, it is out there, it has awesome games, people are buying it, 3rd parties are on board and releasing million sellers, we see the vision of marketplace and all that jazz. All there is to do now is hype every new game that comes out in the next 3-4 years.

The truly fun and challenging part is taking a system that hasn't even been released and nobody knows anything about and trying to help make it successful. Right now, the stage is set for the 360. All there is to do is improve reliability, decrease price, and push software.

Do you know what I mean? Really the funnest part of a console cycle for a guy in Moore's position is already over. The success of the 360 is practically guaranteed at this point. It will outsell the xbox and make money when it is said and done with. It will also accomplish the goal MS had for working its way into your TV.

Oh, and if you read my post this far, I'll give you a special treat. MS has a big LIVE announcement to make soon. It is *drum roll*....IPTV! Yay!

This is a wonderful spin story that is going on here. He most likely got fired for not doing what he was there to do (anyone remember the story shortly before E3 that showed Xbox360 hadn't hit its estimates?), yet everyone is saying that he left because of money and now he'll be better off.

Spin ruelz!

Am I the only one who thinks $1.5M to sign and $550K salary (with a 75% target bonus) is not a whole hell of a lot for someone in his position?

Pete's getting a lot more than the $1.5 mil this thread is talking about. Check this excerpt from today's Wall Street Journal:

"In a regulatory filing yesterday, EA said it will grant Mr. Moore 50,000 restricted-stock units, which have a current value of about $2.5 million. It will grant him an option to purchase 350,000 shares of the company's stock. The value of the options grant isn't yet clear, as the "strike price," or purchase price for him, won't be determined until he starts at the company in September. At yesterday's 4 p.m. price of $49.47 on the Nasdaq Stock Market, 350,000 shares would be valued at $17.3 million."

"Since 1999 the President of the United States has been on an annual salary of $400,000. Running the sports division at the leading third-party publisher Electronic Arts is apparently more important than running our nation – if you’re simply looking at salary, that is."

To quote Babe Ruth when he was told he was being paid more than the President - “I had a better year than he did.”

He deserves it. EA needs a face that people respect, and Peter Moore is the guy. I don't remember people hating Moore for being dishonest, liar, arrogant, etc. He has always been likable. A very good PR dude. Let's see if he can turn EA around (in terms of popularity with the hardcore gamers) like he did with Xbox.
