Joystiq hands-on: Beautiful Katamari
-1.jpg)
There are few features that set Beautiful Katamari apart from its predecessors, though the core gameplay is the same. Pulling directly from the game's fact sheet, we can tell you that it features HD resolution (720p), a new "catchy" soundtrack, new levels, new characters, offline and online multiplayer, and downloadable content. It's those last two bits that are likely to grab most people's attention. The game supports 1-2 players on the same Xbox and 2-4 over Xbox Live. Multiplayer includes both competitive and cooperative play, so everyone should be satisfied. Another interesting addition is that players can participate in mini-games inside the online game lobbies. We don't know what these mini-games are precisely -- though they are promised to "spread the world of Katamari Damacy" -- but they should ease the pain of waiting for more players to join.

The Namco Bandai representative at our demo station also told me that the controls have been tightened and made more accessible (i.e. easier). There are also some new and interesting challenge levels that require players to do more than simply obtain the largest ball of stuff. For instance, one level is filled with hot spicy food. The object of the level is to have your Katamari reach a certain temperature. Hot items (naturally) increase your Katamari's temperature. Cold items will lower the temperature and should be avoided.
Is it worth it for Katamari fans? If online play is your cup of tea, then yes it probably is. Of course, Xbox fans who've never played a previous Katamari have a good reason to check it out, too. If Namco Bandai has the sense to put a budget price tag on it -- according to GameStop, they do -- Beautiful Katamari could introduce lots of new players to the King of All Cosmos and bring in plenty of old fans itching for some online play.

I am curious as how an existing fan will adapt to the gameplay, considering the that the 360 controller has asymmetrical analog sticks?
Anam @ Jul 19th 2007 4:35PM
Yeah, I'm also wondering about the analog sticks. I really like the PS layout more...
Also, is the multiplayer going to be the same as We Love Katamari? I didn't much care for multiplayer in that one.
eldee @ Jul 19th 2007 4:41PM
I don't think it'll be that hard to adapt to. Maybe for the first 5 minutes it'll feel strange, but after that it's the same thing.

This is the one key game that may sway me to get a 360.
Well, once they fix the damn things, of course. (And once I get an HDTV...)
Slvrgun @ Jul 19th 2007 4:52PM
Use a cheap LCD monitor, or even an old CRT monitor with the HD VGA cable or you can check out the Olevia, Visco and Vizio LCDs (Walmart, Target, Buy.com,Newegg). I got a 27 inch Olevia 527v comparable to the big brands like Sony, Phillips and Toshiba for $468 with free shipping. Its easy to go HD.

If I can adapt to Me & My Katamaris use of the face buttons, I can adapt to some asymmetrical sticks.
I love katamari and will buy a 360 for this game.
Crono @ Jul 19th 2007 4:56PM
Wait for the price drop/falcon model. It should be out before christmas.
Anam @ Jul 19th 2007 5:03PM
What's the falcon model?
WiNG @ Jul 19th 2007 4:56PM
There should be a part where you roll up thousands of unpurchased PS3s, then cash them in at the end of the level for $1200 each.
Reno @ Jul 19th 2007 9:33PM
Hey!!
$1200 is RRP here in NZ, sucks

I am looking for to new Katamariness. We

I am looking for to new Katamariness. WeHeartKatamari was a decent continuation of the first game, although I share in Adan's hesitation.
I don't think rolling types of material is new, though. The other games had the lil prince collecting cows, fire (water and ice cream were hazards), among other strange requests from the king.

I thought I heard something about this coming to the wii. I'm gonna hold of for a while, and if it doesn't. Then I'll have to finally crack and get a 360.
Grindstone @ Jul 19th 2007 5:49PM
I shall graciously insist on a demo first and foremost. Having not known the original game, I shall be apprehensive until I can try it out free of charge.
Leshrac @ Jul 19th 2007 6:33PM
$40 is budget priced? I suppose it's cheaper than the $60 rip-offs that most games are now, but $40 used to pass as "normal" priced for a lot of new PS2 games. Let's also not forget that the original Katamari actually WAS budget priced at $20.

A demo is coming! From the looks of Andy's link from 360post. XBL is the best. Demo after demo after demo!
ALH @ Jul 20th 2007 3:44AM
Heres hoping this one comes to europe. Katamari + achievements= DO WANT
mnemo @ Jul 20th 2007 4:03AM
I bought Me & My Katamari for the PSP because I wanted to see what the hype was about and MAN, the controls are a pain in the arse. I'll pass on the Xbox version.
meleeblub @ Jul 20th 2007 4:26AM
@mnemo
Don't judge the game by that crappy PSP port - You really need 2 analogue sticks to do this game's control scheme justice
mnemo @ Jul 20th 2007 5:04AM
If they release a demo on XBLM I'll take a look at it, but after my experience with the PSP version, I won't buy it unseen. The control scheme will be basically the same, if you use a stick or buttons doesn't make that much of a difference, I guess.
meleeblub @ Jul 20th 2007 5:56AM
Trust me mnemo - it makes a huge difference, I have the PS2 and PSP versions.
The buttons only allow for 8 possible combinations - up down left right and diaganols.
Proper analogue control offers complete directional freedom. Apparently there is a demo coming out so give it a go. There's nothing like starting off small enough to only roll up a thumb-tack, then by the end of a level being able to roll up whole continents!
mnemo @ Jul 20th 2007 7:35AM
I'll give the demo a shot.
Stonesand @ Jul 20th 2007 12:50PM
Grindstone: having played this game on a PS2 (I know, traitorous), it is worth every penny. A great family game that even my wife doesn't mind on. A demo will be perfect - this game is already well split into levels, and should provide a full level accordingly.
