Bungie Weekly: fully functioning, real-world Warthog edition

We'd like to think that Frankie, doing his best Gandalf impression, rode into this weeks update through a white flash of brilliance -- the fully-functioning Warthog pictured above as his steed. Created for a series of Halo shorts by would-be Halo director Neill Blomkamp (the first of which we saw at E3), WETA's Warthog is built to correct scale and features the appropriate equipment mounted on back.
The first order of business for this week's update had to do with the freak out concerning some illicit EGM scans and the possibility of Halo 3 shipping without online co-operative play. Frankie reiterates that while they told EGM that co-operative play will be available for both split-screen and system link play, they didn't say whether online co-op would be available. They're well aware of the demand for it and it's something -- like the rest of Halo 3 -- that they'll continue to work on.
Everything else from tweaks to the Covenant Energy Sword to Contact Harvest author Joe Staten appearing at ComicCon can be found within the update itself. It's also worth checking out if you consider yourself to be the biggest Halo fan in one of many cities across the country for a very special reason.

I can safely say that 'I want' and 'Gimme'.
Shiro @ Jul 21st 2007 3:40AM
Yeah, me too. But that's only because I don't even need a goddamned steering wheel to handle it.
I just have to look in the direction I want to go.
Neebs @ Jul 20th 2007 9:41PM
The best day ever for me is if RoosterTeeth reenacted RvB 100 with this thing.
"What the hell is that music?"
bearattack79 @ Jul 20th 2007 9:53PM
Road Rage anyone?
alexy @ Jul 20th 2007 9:54PM
you know.....It DOES look more like a puma than a warthhog....
AndrewNeo @ Jul 20th 2007 10:54PM
Stop making up animals!
Charli3 @ Jul 23rd 2007 11:39AM
...cock-bite!
bearattack79 @ Jul 20th 2007 9:56PM
The hooks on the front resemble the tusks on a warthog. I dont see a puma.
Anticrawl @ Jul 20th 2007 9:59PM
I think you may have an imagination deficiency, seriously, the front-end is very cat-like, especial from a side-view.
Heh, hyphen's rock.
Azerael @ Jul 20th 2007 11:59PM
How many green pumas have you seen?
Seifer @ Jul 21st 2007 1:50PM
You mean a walrus?
Anticrawl @ Jul 20th 2007 9:56PM
So... this is what they have been doing instead of working on online co-op..
Can't say I blaim them either, I'd totally be tearing it up all day in that thing instead of working. I'd make up really terrible excuses too, much like Frankie did.
Evan @ Jul 20th 2007 9:58PM
They should totally get a commercial car company to manufacture those(without the gun of course).
Anticrawl @ Jul 20th 2007 10:01PM
I'd like mine with a gun, or a harpoon. I'll teach those H2's and H3's to not merge without looking.
Word of the street. @ Jul 20th 2007 10:08PM
Are you telling me that turret is functional?!.I want that and I want it Now.
nate @ Jul 20th 2007 10:22PM
OMG THAT IS SO SICK!
rockeranimefreak @ Jul 20th 2007 10:50PM

ehtoanokuso @ Jul 20th 2007 11:36PM

bearattack79 @ Jul 20th 2007 11:53PM
Hyphens are for suckers! EAT.
BananaBoat @ Jul 21st 2007 12:16AM
A first party game not having online co-op would be ridiculous. If Halo 3 (Highest budget game ever right? Or am I wrong?) doesn't have online co-op, there will be hell to pay from the fans that have been clamoring for it for years. Then again, Bungie has really never been the innovator (Halo 1 didn't have live support, remember? Was a major let down) when it comes to new online features.
I just hope they can put enough graphical polish on the thing to keep me more interested than the Beta did. This is make it or break it time, and they'd better spend all the time necessary to make sure the game looks shiny as we're all hoping it will (Minus the Wii-crazy people that think graphics have nothing to do with how good the gameplay is, which is a joke)
rdj75 @ Jul 21st 2007 9:13AM
Now wait a minute, I understand how important online co-op is to you, myself and to many other halo players but to say that "Bungie has really never been the innovator (Halo 1 didn't have live support, remember? Was a major let down) when it comes to new online features".
Thats just stupid, granted many people didn't like halo 2 multiplayer but it is still one of the most fully featured multiplayer experiences on xbox live to this day(ignoring all the cheating). And how in the hell are you going to say that halo 1 didn't have live support, of course it didn't, it was a launch title and live wasn't introduced for another year after that, so how is that a let down? In any case I am sure these guys want to make the best game possible with the resources they have, if not how about you go and work for Bungie and make the best multiplayer experience ever.
Jack @ Aug 5th 2007 1:17PM
While graphics are good, they are not central to gameplay. People have enjoyed countless games from the older systems which could barely push anything more than pixellated blobs.
Obie @ Jul 21st 2007 12:39AM
I had a discussion with an army buddy of mine. He said that while the hog is cool, it would suck as a real world war vehicle, as it leaves the occupants ( and especially the gunner) totally exposed to enemy fire.
Sean @ Jul 21st 2007 2:30AM
Ah, of course it would all other things being what they are in the real world. But you forget that in halo's world, soldiers have far more advanced personal armor, so giving them a more open vehichle with better flexability of control and better lines of sight isn't as disasterous one would think.
Or it is just a stupid but cool looking design. Either one.
Gnome @ Jul 21st 2007 1:04AM
Just wait till soldiers get regenerating shields, then we'll talk. :)
Ally @ Jul 21st 2007 9:04AM
You had to talk to an army buddy to realise it is completely open? :/
Obie @ Jul 21st 2007 9:07AM
Not just open. But that the front "windshield" would lead to poor visibility and lots of glare. That is why Army hummers have non-angled vertical windows all around.
fester @ Jul 21st 2007 12:47AM
Wow,even George Barris himself couldn't match that pearlescent camo paint job! {just kidding George, your still the greatest-still got my AMT i/25 ALA KART from the 60's!] lol.
bearattack79 @ Jul 21st 2007 12:54AM
If I was a genetically enhanced super soldier using crazy alien technology for armor. I'd ride in it.
Angelo @ Jul 21st 2007 2:15AM
The way you write pisses me off.
bearattack79 @ Jul 21st 2007 2:28AM
It's a comments section on a blog you loser. Grammer is not a priority for me right now. I'm at work getting paid for this dick face, so I get my comments in quick.
kerunt @ Jul 21st 2007 10:35PM
Grammar is not something one needs to think about. If you had received a proper education, you would write correctly without any effort. Oh wait, you can't get a proper education in the US - my bad.
(It's fucking wonderful that I, with English as my third language, and without any special efforts to learn spelling/grammar, can write better than 95% of native Americans.)
falcongeek @ Jul 21st 2007 11:54PM
@ kerunt
Yes sadly you do have better grammar than most Americans, but you really shouldn't be showing off your arrogance in a comment system. Its not the place, go to http://www.englishforums.com/ maybe someone there can use your "help" and comments.
Sky Shark @ Jul 21st 2007 2:30AM
I want that thing so bad. Too bad this can never enter a full blown public production. I bet there would be thousands who would buy this. Anyone want to bet that some military people might check this out and see if they could use it. I wonder what's next, a working Pelican?
fffunfarm06---xbl @ Jul 21st 2007 2:48AM
dude i just creamed myself. i freakin want one. where do i sign?
Jim @ Jul 21st 2007 4:26AM
Do they come in pink too? ^^
meist3r @ Jul 21st 2007 4:28AM
Have Ben Heck(endorn) mod that thing to Wireless Xbox360 pad steering! The gunner could be a second player.
Kye @ Jul 21st 2007 6:28AM
If I can't flip it should it turn over, then it ain't fully functioning.
Jeff @ Jul 21st 2007 11:21AM
Fully Functional. I want to she some vids of that gun firing!!!
Chris @ Jul 21st 2007 2:37PM
I can think of a few congested streets that would be perfect for.
Stephen @ Jul 21st 2007 5:19PM
Is there a reason we don't get to know what powers it or any of the cool stats on it? I mean,no horsepower? Really?
falcongeek @ Jul 21st 2007 11:54PM
First of all, the replica is awesome. Its detail is amazing, they certainly spent a great deal of time on it.
But as for the turret, ( understanding that the comments were sarcastic) there is no way it could be real. The cylinders that the bullets pass through, are much too small and long to be actual gun barrels. they would heat up like crazy.
bo huskon @ Jul 23rd 2007 4:09PM
I hope it's indestructable like Halo: Combat Evolved
loganmc123 @ Jul 29th 2007 4:19PM
wouldn't that be awesome if the army started using these
