Pigskin Metareview: NCAA 08 vs All-Pro 2K8 vs Madden 08

Some people pass the time by going on vacation, others read quietly, some take up a new hobby, like whittling, and still others reflect on the nature of man vs. the infinite. The rest of us simply purchase the latest football games and pick up the yelling and screaming like it never left off. With that in mind, we're rounding up the reviews for this year's crop of gridiron offerings. Choose wisely, and prepare yourself for some thumb blistering goodness.
Gallery: NCAA Football 08
The collegiate entry has always been a fan-favorite for the past several years, although it faces no competition since NCAA Football 08 is the only college football game in the lineup. Last year's title wasn't met with open arms, and a lot of fans cried out for penalties on the gameplay, but they've apparently ironed out most of the problems this year. Of course, where you squash one bug, another one always pops up ...
- GameDaily (8/10) says "NCAA Football 08 rights the wrongs of last season and begins its sophomore campaign as one of the most enjoyable football games of the past few years." Strong words indeed, although they also say the motivation system "feels tacked on" and that the AI has "occasional lapses." Despite the strong score, they conclude with, "NCAA 08, despite its best features needs more polish."
- IGN (8.1/10) however liked last year's title and points out that "Veterans of NCAA 07 will definitely note the lack of groundbreaking adjustments that made last year's title so great to play." Despair not, because they go on to say, "Don't think that NCAA Football 08 isn't an enjoyable football game, because it is ... however, by comparison to last year's title, NCAA Football 08 is a mild step backwards."
- 1Up (8.0) agrees with GameDaily, saying "Even the most storied college gridiron programs have suffered the occasional subpar season. That just happened to be last year for EA's NCAA Football franchise." They don't love the fact that you can't take the Dynasty Mode online, but do say "From the very first snap, you'll notice this game runs a whole lot faster and smoother than last year's edition."
Gallery: All-Pro Football 2K8
The "other pro football" game in the bunch is All-Pro Football 2K8 from Take-Two Interactive. Since the NFL license for current players is held by Electronic Arts, All-Pro features over 240 ex-football players. From Jerry Rice to John Elway, you can play classic greats from yesteryear in a slew of teams created for the game, like the Rustler, the Sharks, etc. It's a return, of sorts, of ESPN NFL 2K5 from Sega (who sold game developers Visual Concepts to Take-Two), but how does it stack up?
- 1Up (6.5/10) has a good point, "It's been too long since there's been a choice, and you'll find some seriously solid gameplay in All-Pro Football." But they also cry foul over the lack of game modes (there really aren't any), and conclude with "if you were expecting 2K euphoria after two years on the sidelines, you'll be disappointed."
- GameInformer (8/10) really feels the love, though, and says "For all you NFL 2K5 and football fans out there – this is the game you hoped it would be." They cite improved gameplay mechanics and want more story about the faux league and teams "Bolster this aspect and make some gameplay tweaks, and All-Pro Football will threaten Madden's NFL more than the XFL ever did."
- A reader at IGN (6.9/10) says "The AI, blocking, and controls are all done quite well", but then goes on to point out a lot of things they don't like, including some problems with the mechanics. In the end they say, "This series has a looong way to go." The extras o's are to show just how far it has to go.
Gallery: Madden 08
Madden is still the end-all, be-all of football games, and remains king of the hill after many years. Since it's the only NFL-licensed offering this year, it'll stay on top again with no problem, but hopefully we'll see more competition in the coming years. Not only is it nice having a choice, but it forces Madden to continue upping the ante through improved gameplay and innovations. Madden NFL 08 comes out on August 14th, and as many of you readers have pointed out, none of the major review sites have touched the title yet. We'll post a roundup of some of the "previews" below, and we'll do a metareview once the scores are in.
- 1Up thinks the game is a big improvement over the first "next-gen" offerings, although thinks they fumbled the online elements, "The online options here are bare bones (where are the online leagues?!)" They also point out that the game looks "silky smooth at 60 fps" on the Xbox 360.
- IGN sings the biggest praise for the game with, "This year Madden is back in a big way, with all of the trimmings that you'd expect from a true next-gen football experience." They like the new and improved animations and other bells and whistles that the game offers, but sum it up by saying, "The real star of the show is finally the gameplay."
- GameSpot says that this is "a game that feels markedly different from last year." They point out the graphic and gameplay improvements, concluding with "Thanks to some extremely responsive controls, the gameplay in Madden is already feeling like an improvement over previous years."
Of course, your own mileage will vary. Chime in and let us know what brand of football you'll be playing.

I like the idea of AllPro, but I think I'll stick with Madden this year. Of course, since I never pay full price for a sports game, I'll probably be getting Madden 08 well into 2008 when it gets discounted to $20-$30. For now, I'll stick with Madden 07 and the occasional game of Blitz.
a.j. @ Jul 20th 2007 2:54PM
I own All Pro 2K8 and I'm loving it. Could it use some more gameplay modes? Sure, but damnit, at it's core, it's a better all around football game than anything out there right now. I'm not a fanboy, I like Madden too but right now, APF has it beat hands down. Online is lag free, the animations are top notch and again, the core FOOTBALL gameplay is spot on. Give em a year to polish it even more and add those missing gameplay options and this series will go far.
burnt_secondary @ Jul 20th 2007 2:56PM
Really, a reader at IGN?? Couldn't you wait to post this until IGN really has a review up for APF 2K8. I mean, how did you pick this reader?
Not that I think the game deservers better than a 7.5 but really, why are his comments picked over another IGN Readers???? Lame, just lame . . .
Kevin Kelly @ Jul 20th 2007 3:20PM
Only two of the major gaming sites even reviewed All-Pro Football 2K8, so we had to get it where we could. His review was decent, and not simply "OMG THIS ROXX0RZ!!!!!!!"
Jackswastedlife @ Jul 20th 2007 6:53PM
Agreed. Much like the 1up review itself (which was based on a retail copy less than 48 hours after the game shipped - this shows in the review), I have to wonder what the rush was for this article.
T H @ Jul 20th 2007 3:02PM
All I know is that when I picked up the PS3 around launch, I was beyond excited for Madden '07. Then I got it home, and the game felt more sluggish than an \y previous Madden ever had.. I returned it the next day for Fight Night. Which is saying a lot, because before the PS3 offering, I wore Madden out annually on the PS2... let's hope they ironed out the issues.
copa @ Jul 20th 2007 3:07PM
60 fps is awesome.
Jake @ Jul 20th 2007 3:12PM
Please don't let this start a flamewar. But which sports game was it where the PS3 version was going to run at 30fps and the 360 version at 60fps. I sorta need to know.
MooseMuffin @ Jul 20th 2007 3:14PM
All three of the games listed.
vidGuy @ Jul 20th 2007 3:14PM
Madden?
Beaudry @ Jul 20th 2007 4:33PM
All-Pro 2k8 and NCAA both run at 30fps on the PS3. Madden runs at 60fps on both systems.
WiNG @ Jul 20th 2007 3:18PM
I like how use guys used the review of "some reader at IGN". Try not to use any joystiq reader opinions or you won't have anything to pull from it other than "This game rox cuz it's on system ABC" or "Joystiq didn't like it cuz they're so bias!"
dl @ Jul 20th 2007 3:21PM
IS THIS GONNA BE THE LAST ORIGINAL XBOX GAME?
Matt B @ Jul 20th 2007 3:24PM
I have NCAA 08 for the PS3. I was a bit surprised how bad EA did with the PS3 version. The menus seam choppy and slow, but the gameplay is smooth and a lot of fun. I also was a little taken back by the fact that I was going to have to spend 2 hours setting up my dynasty before ever making it onto the field.
Overall, I'd give it a 7-7.5 just because of the obvious laziness that EA has shown during the menus.
MookieFL @ Jul 20th 2007 3:26PM
I bought NCAA on Tuesday, and I'm enjoying it a lot so far. I think the college game is more enjoyable than the NFL, and recruiting is far more fun than free agency for me.
I preferred the 2K series to Madden, but I can't get into a non-licensed sports game for some reason, it just seems cheesy and low-budget. I'm glad they're back in the game, but the reviews I've seen aren't making me rush out the store...
E.J. @ Jul 20th 2007 3:27PM
I bought All-Pro 2k8 and it's just as good as NFL 2k5. But that's the problem. All-Pro is just a copy-paste, 60 FPS version of NFL 2k5 with no frills for $60.
It's cool that the Visual Concepts rendered the players' faces themselves instead of using pictures. They look closer to their real life counterparts that way.
The gameplay is still the same as NFL 2k5 which is not necessarily a bad thing. I just wish that this was somewhat of a budget title as was 2k5 (probably around $30-$40). Not only would it match its worth, it would get people to buy it too, just like when 2k5 came out at the basement price of $20. Wonder why EA bought exclusive rights to the NFL and ESPN licenses? Fear.
Jackswastedlife @ Jul 20th 2007 7:06PM
After spending the last two evenings with the product, calling the gameplay a copy-paste is either some marketing stooge's idea of guerrilla marketing or the observation of a causal football fan or someone who has yet to play the game.
Nearly every aspect of the game (aside from its problematic player swapping code) has been redone. The core movement model, the animation blending system, the core mechanics on the offensive and defensive line, the player differentiation models across positions, the open-field blocking code, the animation and gameplay systems behind tackling, the DB AI, the passing game, the running game's internal systems, the commentary, the presentation system, and many other aspects have all undergone heavy revisions that are, with the exception of the new kick meter, revolutionary additions to the sport in video gaming.
If you'd like more details, feel free to ping me, but that comment is a bit misinformed, in my opinion.
E.J. @ Jul 21st 2007 6:44AM
It's ironic that you call me a marketing stooge while you're sounding like one at the same time.
You may be right in one aspect: every aspect of the game has been redone, that is, for it to work on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
The core movement model may have been /slightly/ improved, but not by much. Player differentiation models? Oh, you mean some players are bigger and smaller than others? Pretty revolutionary!
You say presentation and commentary have been improved? I'm sorry, but this is a far cry from when they had ESPN integration. Of course, they've added a few more lines of commentary (oh yeah, let's not forget the all-important names!), but playing my Xbox version of ESPN NFL 2k5 and APF 2k8 side-by-side does not reveal a lot of differences in commentary. I don't think I'm the one observing the game from a "causal" [sic] point of view.
I'll give you the improvements in model collisions especially in gang-tackles (beautiful!), but to call this game's "redo['s]... revolutionary additions to the sport in video gaming" is the overstatement of the year.
Don't get me wrong, I like APF2k8: it's the first football game I've purchased since ESPN NFL 2k5. I've played old-gen and now-gen Madden through rentals and, >>TO ME
E.J. @ Jul 21st 2007 6:48AM
, they don't match up to 2k5's gameplay.
Peace.
[Sorry, post got cut off]
Jackswastedlife @ Jul 22nd 2007 6:36AM
While I appreciate the passion and the notion that my nod to the changes in presentation were a bit generous (though I was mainly referring to the half and post-game shows, which I feel are much much sharper), I feel like you're a touch wounded and nit-picking in a vague attempt to put me in my place.
All appologies for upsetting you.
Seriously.
That said, you're obviously somewhat familiar with 2K5, but my humble opinion is that calling gameplay "the same as 2K5" is just plain misleading.
Things like defensive line play, the pocket and its role in gameplay, open-field blocking, mid-game blocking adjustments, double-teams, sideline catches, catches in general, pass defense, momentum related to tackling and player size and pre-tackle momentum, QB AI (evasion, especially), route running (both good and bad), defensive angle AI (again, good and bad), and the general passing mechanic...they're markedly better than they were in 2K5, both in their level of realim and in the way they play.
What's more, those all shine in ways their counterparts in both 2K5 and Madden 07 never did. Maybe those things aren't "football" to you and that's cool, but it seems like you're not really giving credit where it' due. Not because you don't like football games, but because you're more focused on slamming small bits of the game for effect and mocking my typos.
That stuff is funny, but doesn't make that article or the shoddy reviews I'm reading any less annoying.
; - )
p.s. - The player differentiation models I was referring to are not player sizes, I mean the additional mechanics added to help convey different player types ("abilities"). Not to mention how the game is once again centered around its talent pool, not a bunch of exploits - though I'm sure there's debate on that topic.
andres @ Jul 20th 2007 3:48PM
You see Electronic Footbal was a metaphor for America. Always buzzing and shaking full of electricty. With people that loved to there thing....wait no not it isnt...Electronic football was a crappy game that never worked.
chrisking @ Jul 20th 2007 3:52PM
OK - I smell conspiracy. And, I've written in to Joystiq the past two days on this same subject...
GAMESPOT and IGN have both neglected to post 360/PS3 reviews of either NCAA 08 or ALLPRO FOOTBALL as of yesterday (IGN's is dated 7/19, but it wasn't up as of 1145pm cst yesterday). What's up with that?? These are pretty high profile games to not be reviewed within 24 hours of release.
They couldn't tell us if the 60fps/30fps difference was noticeable...which is probably a major buying factor for some of us.
SO, I dropped my 60 bucks on the 360 All Pro. It's not that great. Kind of boring, really. I wish I would've listened to 1UP b/c they are the only one of the main three sites to have the review up in a timely manner.
I wonder how many EA and TakeTwo execs greased the wheel during E3 to hold up the reviews so that more people would just buy one anyway. Makes sense...
Beaudry @ Jul 20th 2007 4:38PM
According to a 1up podcast, they couldn't get a review copy for All-Pro 2k8. It's not a good sign when the game publisher won't give anybody a copy for review.
I don't know why people didn't have NCAA reviews available.
giggas2 @ Jul 20th 2007 6:14PM
APF is perhaps the best football game ever made.
It's that good.
michfan @ Jul 20th 2007 6:24PM
A reader at IGN? Wow... I've come to expect more from Joystiq.
As to the copy-paste comment, simply ridiculous and couldn't be farther from the truth. Obviously they didn't copy-paste the NFL license, or the players, or the modes, or the crib, or the first person football. Compare the two graphically and they obviously made improvements since 2K5. Compare the animations and they obviously added a lot. 2K8 is the beginning of a football juggernaut that will be ready to blow Madden away when exclusivity is gone for 2K11. I'll happily do my part to fund it, as 2K8 in it's bare bones mode is much better than anything EA has done with Madden to date.
Rare Hare @ Jul 20th 2007 8:13PM
Picked up NCAA 08 the day it came out, because i just happened to be wandering into Wal-Mart when I realized it was the seventeenth.
Made it as far as the Orange Bowl with my Campus Legend QB, and then I broke a controller.
While watching my opponent run back my FOURTH interception of the game for a touchdown, I slung my Dual Shock 2 against my entertainment center. It is now lying on my floor, shattered and useless.
I feel like a jackass.
Rare Hare @ Jul 20th 2007 8:14PM
I just found my L1 button :(.
chrisking @ Jul 20th 2007 10:26PM
for any of you still reading the comments here, i've got another question regarding ALL PRO (and even NCAA 08)...
gamespot gives this game (ALL PRO) the same score for the ps3 and the 360. yet, we've been told in previews that the 360 runs at 60fps and the ps3 at 30fps.
a) is there absolutely no discernable difference between 30fps and 60 fps?
b) do they review games based on what the game has (great gameplay either way) or what it hasn't (one is running smoother than the other b/c of the framrate diference)? it seems as if they review this game on what it has to offer. that's fair, i think.
c) but, for example, why do wii games get burned b/c they of no online, or no hd graphics (something the game doesn't have), when the "fun" is still there?...for that matter, why does ALL PRO FOOTBALL then get docked for not having dynasty/career modes, minigames, etc...
btw, i'm not a hater. i have all of the systems, but i'm becoming increasingly suspect of the review system. except gamesforlunch. that one's pretty awesome.
ck
Miles @ Jul 21st 2007 6:54AM
I played 2k8 online (XB360)and I notice a framerate drop. I assume to compensate for lag. At first its was screwing with my eyes, but after about a quarter you got used to it. I gotta assume the 30fps on PS3 is playable, but 60fps just looks better. But hey, if I got the choice between the two, having SixAxis functionality or XB360 speed is what I'd be choosing between.
Zeeman @ Jul 23rd 2007 5:30PM
I just picked up NCAA08 and it is coming along. EA is taking a big leap in the success direction with this game. Not sure if all of you know, but there is a mode called Campus Legend, you create your own player, start in your high school state champ playoffs, win that, choose a college to play at, then stick w/ the college for 4 years, but after that (about the time Madden will hit the stores) you can then import your custom character into the Madden Superstar mode, being a rookie from college and all that jazz. This is huge and I don't think a lot of people understand where they are going with this. Think about it, there is already the NCAA Bball and Live series, so they will most likey do the same thing although I have not heard of it yet but ncaa08/madden could be a trial (just like EA now owns console RTS games (real time strategy for you non-hardcore gamers) but they tested w/ lord of the rings, guess what, people liked playing an RTS game on their couch, not w/ a mouse and keyboard. 2K needs to act fast if they are to stick it out in the football world. APF is not the answer. They need to take over the NCAA scene and that might buy them enough time for the nfl/ea license to expire (which I have also heard although not reliable) they will not be able to renew. But overall, I love college football and I like the whole idea of starting from high school and going all the way through a retirement phase. That was just genious on their part, although I was always a 2K fan since 2k5, but they really need to jump the gun on here or they are going to be out and no one will have the kahuna's to step up to EA.
Zeeman @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:41PM
One quick edit, I meant to say 2K5 was the best game ever, and I've actually stuck w/ the series since NFL2K for dreamcast if anyone remembers that :D But EA has slowly started to convert me, which they have done w/ a lot of games, but then they always screw up something such as their next release of Need For Speed which will be very horrible as I've been in the tuner scene for many years and we have never dragged "tuner/ricer" cars on a real drag strip. Muscles and exotics are a different story...but yeah that's just retarded :P Give EA time and they will flop the football series eventually.
Madden freak @ Aug 7th 2007 6:08AM
hey can everyone tell me which either apf2k8, madden 08 or ncaa 08 has the best gameplay. Please help i really can't decide what to get.
