Yea, many sites thought they wouldn't feature ads ever...then they learned that bandwidth & servers actually cost money *gasp*! Still, the main thing is that the FAQs are always free...hats off to CJayC.

6/3/2003 GameFAQs isn't going to be merged in with GameSpot or any other site. We're not going to strip out the soul of the site. - CJayC

That was my fave.

Hopefully they ax the forums from the website. Anytime I tried to browse them, pieces of my brain ran away from home in protest.

-shrug-

As long as they keep the repository of older game FAQs for those clutch situations, then all is well.

the game boards and some social boards can cause one to have a sudden loss of IQ but the Level Boards (ie Veterans and Legends) can be very fun to post on if you stay around long enough to access them.

The site lost its soul the moment he sold it anyway. Nothing would change he said, hah! That he sold it is why it's no longer the first and last place to go for FAQs.

The forums are needed though, where else are you going to have entire boards dedicated to Faxanau, Mario Tennis AND Mighty Max?

I dunno if it's the first place for you, but it's still the first place for me and many other people.

Complaining about 'Oh, he said there'd never be ads!' or 'Oh, he sold out! I poo poo on his website!' just isn't practical. Can you still submit FAQs? Why yes! You can! Are you charged for them? Why no! You're not! Was added functionality added to the site? Well snap! It was! Are the boards sometimes dumb? ... well, that's a gimme. But this is the internet.

My point is is that the place is huge and has been around forever. He's had help for a buncha years and unless they crash and burn the place after CJayC leaves it'll continue to be awesome.

Ads never bothered me. The boards have always been a mess, half the fun really, but I was there when the place was sold (and for years before). There was a change, a disconnection of something from the community, we all felt it.

It's like that feeling you get when you know you've just inhaled whatever illness the guy next to you has, the impending doom of the slow rot.

Used to be the only thing that could outclass the amount of knowledge GameFAQs provided on a game was a GOOD, dedicated fan site, not anymore.

Sorry, someone pays me the right money for something I made for fun and I would take up the offer. The site basically stayed the same anyway, sure, ads, pointless polls and links to GameSpot everywhere... But you can still go and dupe their gullibul userbase into believing an MS paint'd picture is a new Xbox 360 game. Ahh, memories.

Look, "sir", the age limit is 13 to register so there are no 10 year old people there. Research something before you make baseless assumptions.

maybe he could have meant 13+ year olds with the brain of 10 year olds. because ive been on those forums and i totally agree with aylera's statement.
i come out of there feeling more stupid. the number of immature, supposedly 13+ year old attention-whores on that forum (and pretty much any other video game forum)just boggles the mind.

Seriously? I signed up on GameFAQs when I was 10/11. It's not that hard to "fool" COPPA: Just press "Yes, I am 13," and you're on your way.

I remember my first time. I was getting nowhere fast in FFIX and I.. Wait actually it was probably Pokemon when I was looking for Game Shark codes. I tried the site but it was relatively useless. I then googled it and found GameFaqs. Really useful for all those FAQs.

Does this mean the site will actually move beyond 1995 and start accepting FAQs in something other than .txt format?

Because the majority of word processing programs accept .txt extensions. Text is one of the most compatible documents so everyone and their grandma can access them. Yes it would be nice to have super snazzy guides with flash or power point or video, but who do you think will make all of them? And make sure most people can access them? And still keep down bandwidth and cost issues so they still remain free to the public?

I'm talking about basic HTML sites, which everyone and their grandma can also access. Why should the standard be based on word processing programs, which no one uses to view websites, rather than web browsers, which everyone uses to view websites?

Who will make these pages? -Everybody- knows HTML. And even if they don't, Gamefaqs could provide easy-to-use templates. Sure, it would open up the possibility of all that fancy stuff like embedded video, audio, and visual walkthroughs (which other sites have been doing for years). But more importantly, it would allow the most basic functions of web browsing that the site should have had a decade ago - images, decent navigation within FAQs, and font style variations for readability.

How to keep it free? Server space is so cheap now that even free webhosting and email sites offer 100s of megs of space, and far fewer people view most of those pages than guides at Gamefaqs. It would be no hair off their back to give each guide 30 megs or so of storage for extra multimedia. What's more, HTML guides would give the opportunity for -more- profit, because ads could be attached to each page. It would also mean they could open up their guides to search engines, bringing in much more traffic.

The only explanation I've gotten for why the site doesn't do this is that "Jeff Veasey doesn't know how." His leaving will probably be the best thing to ever happen to that site, if it means someone else takes over and brings it into the 21st century.

He's probably in his 30's now (just guessing), and just read the forums on his site for the first time in years. When he read the innane fanboy curses, hip hop jargon, jackass type commentary that seems cool when you're 12 and the rest of the type of threads on his own site and realized that he couldn't even remotely identify with the majority of it, he realized it was time for him to move on.

i was on the poll of the day board the other day and noticed a topic with 100+ replies. It was titled "So I told this girl I liked her yesterd". Then inside said "and he said she liked me back. Im so happy". When you see stuff like that, you know its an elementry/high school hangout. I ran away quickly.

i dont go on the social boards, but the actual game forums can provide tips and stuff before anyone writes them up into a FAQ (great for new games)

i don't pay attention to the ads there, but when gamespot does the intro page ads before you can even access the main page, i just close the browser and don't go back there for a day or so, that shit is so annoying

please, you can't go anywhere on the net and not bump into ads. what do you think you see on this same page, next to comments, next to the headline.

don't like ads? then get off the internet.

gamefaqs still is the best site to visit when you're stuck on a game.

It always pisses me off when I have to go to GameFAQs but I'm always less pissed off once I figure out what stupid thing I have to do that the developers didn't make obvious enough.

Hats off to CJayC for a job well done, broken promises or not. Hopefully he uses the money he has to build something better for the gaming community. Either that or beer and hookers.

As an avid user of GameFAQs since 2000, I am sorry to see CJayC go. While some may say that he sold out... it was necessary. The choices were either to let the site die, or to get funding from another source. He definitely made the right choice. I have also been on the boards since sometime 2001, and while the userbase is very immature and rude for the most part, it has remained my Internet home for as long as I can remember. Having CJayC leave feels almost like a friend is moving away.

Even I feel like I have outgrown it a bit. Granted, I an not quite as old as CJayC, but I can still feel my age showing while reading the same middle school-ish posts that I read 5 years ago. I'm not quite up to shaking the habit yet... the forums are just too addictive. It's really unlike any other forum that I have been on. There are so many boards, and so many communities, and so many users that things just somehow never get old. I take up residence at a new board every so often and leave a couple months later. CE is my current home.

But I'm just rambling. I really just want to thank CJayC for doing everything that he has done over the past so many years. I should get around to that before he actually leaves.

I hate going to GameFAQs.

I hate it because the people on the forums are utterly irredeemable of being intelligent life forms.

And I hate it because some part of a game ticked me off enough to go there and experience said people.

I've been using it since it started. And it's still the first place I go looking for help in a game ... and as if to prove something (though I don't know what) the first place my daughter goes for help.

Oh. And I hope it stays in txt forever.

It's funny I've been using gamefaqs for YEARS and have never posted on the forums there. It's just not my thing. I'm just there for the FAQS.

Before I heard of gameFAQS, I used to wait for the saturday paper at home because they feature a "Game Guide" column. I always waited my guts out for saturday to come, and when it DO arrives, the games featured are limited.

I then tried googling walkthroughs when I first learned to use the internet, but sometimes, it would take forever for me the find a guide for the game i'm currently playing.

then I discovered gameFAQS, and my gaming life was never the same.

so i'm just wondering why would anyone hate gameFAQS. It's a WEBSITE, for crying out loud. People have the right and the capability if they want to visit it or not. If there are people who hate gameFAQS, then DON'T VISIT THEM. Don't insult the site or voice out your objections on it because gameFAQS is a great site. It's the haters who let themselves be affected, not the site. Hate the forums? DON'T READ THEM THEN. GameFAQS was, of course, a lot better when there were no ads or links to gamespot and stuff, but they're already there. We'll just have to learn to live with those minor nuisances.

Anyway, I'm sure CjayC had a pretty good reason why he put up all those things there. Maybe because just the FAQS and the boards aren't profitable enough anymore.

And come on. FAQS with flash or videos may be cool, but who really needs them, right? The purpose of gameFAQS, in my opinion, is to simply provide information on games. And what format is the most basic and takes the least amount of space and bandwidth? and if gamers who
contribute (three cheers for them!!!) FAQS want to show an image to the reader, they could post a link to them, right? Knocker is right. I hope it stays in TXT forever. Having media embedded into the guides could compromise the site's speed. The ads already slowed it down as it is.

And to Sir Jeff Veasey, Thanks for making a great site. The idea that you would be leaving the site sucks, but that's life. Good luck on whatever you're planning to do next. God bless and more power!

One last thing, sorry if any of my grammar's a bit off.
