Today's most delayed-and-ambitious video: TED Spore demo
Video of Will Wright's TED Spore presentation from March has recently appeared online. Wright expands on prior Spore demos, giving an overview of the game and explaining parts of his design process. The information-packed 17-minute video keeps us interested in the total life simulation -- from origins to galactic colonization -- but reconfirms how wildly ambitious the project has been. We've been trying to play over/under on the projected ship date window of April, 2008 and March, 2009, but nobody wants "under." But whenever Spore finally arrives, we hope Wright and the other designers can deliver on the unique concept.
[Thanks, Guillaume and Kevin]

Hey Nuke. Sounds like he hurt it skiing: http://blog.wired.com/business/2007/03/will_wright_i_a.html
Note that the "Septemberish" from that link was before EA officially said the game would be next year (or later).

To make any sort of release deadline with Spore, Wright decided to slowly transform himself into a machine.
eldee @ Jul 22nd 2007 1:22AM
Yeah, I saw his keynote at SxSW this year and he was wearing the cast.. but that was back in march.. Must've been a hell of a break.
NukeAssault @ Jul 22nd 2007 12:50AM
Wright* You saw nothing! >_>
Khash @ Jul 22nd 2007 12:57AM
Look at the pythons on Wright! Two tickets to the gun show!
Neebs @ Jul 22nd 2007 1:02AM
Watched the whole thing. That was brilliant.

Apparently he broke it, but i have no freakin clue what the little metal girder is for.

AAAAAAAAAAAHHH! Just release the game already! I can't take it anymore!! I NEED SPORE!!! AAAAAAAAAAHHHKKKK!!!!1!!1!

I love Will Wright. I still have SimCity 4 on my computer. In my mind no one game has ever been as addictive as pretty much any Will Wright game. The only game I can remember playing that totally sucked me in like a Will Wright game was Black and White (as hard on it as some people are, the game was bloody immersive and bloody innovative). Will can take another 3 years on spore. I don't care how long it takes, just polish it to a shine ok?
Truepatriot @ Jul 22nd 2007 2:23AM
it makes perfect sense that one of the most creative game makers went to a montessori school.great video and I NEED SPORE!

Gahh! It looks like they have made spore more kid friendly compared to the earlier videos :(
Jonah Falcon @ Jul 22nd 2007 12:43PM
More kid friendly? How so? Do you mean lowered the system requirements? (rolling eyes)
Did you miss the slug chewing on a poor beast's carcass, or the wasting of an entire planet by baking it in its own juices?
kinshadow @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:59PM
@jonah
I think he's refering to the single-celled organism with eyes. The micro-phase has gone from the fl0w aestehtic to more Disney cartoonish.
poke50uk @ Jul 22nd 2007 8:04AM
What a fantasic game, I really admire the work they've done to represent the physics of real life within the game. This would be an excellent teaching tool for all years.
Ryuukuro @ Jul 22nd 2007 8:51AM
And while I'm twitching from Spore-withdrawl, can I also mention that I hate the TED video tag? It makes these videos look like some Disney product, or something made by PBS only to be shown to uber-nerd insomniacts (well, TED is about uber-nerds but that's different.)
coalhalo @ Jul 22nd 2007 10:11AM
Spore has the potential to be the bigger than The Sims, given it's built-in online connectivity for sharing user created content. And we all know that EA is going to cram this game down our throats (especially given the fact that when EA divided itself into four parts, one of thos is devoted entirely to The Sims et al), with an aggresive marketing targeting casual, and non-traditional gamers. I for one am looking forward to getting Spore when it is finally released. And I have faith in Will Wright that he will deliver quality.
FSK405K @ Jul 22nd 2007 3:07PM
Joystiq, thank you so so much for finding/sharing this video. It looks very nice on my hard drive now.
Eschatos @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:18AM
Now what would be amazing for spore would be online play, co-op, seperate exploration, or intergalactic war among two players, would be ungodly fun.
cacaman @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:20AM
cool vid only feeds my insatiable hunger for spore knowing its more than a year away is torture
harrison_schaerr @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:34AM
absolutely incredible...
it's too bad you can't evolve into a human though =) guess it's a rare way to go though...
will wright is so bold... he has the proven, mass selling sims franchise, and instead of making sims 3, he breaks off into something much greater...
I can't wait =)
rob @ Jul 23rd 2007 1:03AM
Black & White was a Lionhead game - you're confusing Will Wright with Peter Molyneux.
Pigeons Pig @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:38PM
Physic's goal is The Theory of Everything. Perhaps this will be gaming's equivalent. The Game of Everything. I'm far more excited about this game than I can afford to be, in view of the fact that it could be years before we see it.
Does anyone know; a) has Will Wright mentioned current gen console support? and b) where I can download this video on WMV?
kinshadow @ Jul 23rd 2007 1:01PM
@eldee
This TED video is also from March
