it's a fundamental paradox to assume that in game advertising can be completely transparent, while at the same time being unobtrusive...

the effectiveness of an advertisement is measured by it's ability to grab your attention...

a billboard on a boring freeway is more effective than one billboard up against a wall of 5,000 other billboards attempting to hold your attention...

my point is merely that when in game ads become unobtrusive, they'll look just like real world ads, just a blob of noise most consumers filter out as they go about their lives... there's so many different kinds and messages, people don't walk away with a message, unless one particularly stands out, like a 400 foot tall walking robotic Ronald Mcdonald clown =)

It's either going to annoy the player, or it's going to be a useless gesture at attempting to garner someone's mind space.

this is all a waste of time.... in game ads will

A- go unnoticed and truly be transparent
B- be jarring and annoying, angering players
C- be obvious, but humorous or arousing to the player...

best case scenario it's C... but how can you create and advertisement that appeals to everyone who plays?

I have no problem with ads if they are in the right place and aren't tacky (ENLRGE UR P3N1S!!! Clcik here).

I mean DiRT has ungodly amount of ads in it, yet it works fine. It would look out of place if the cars and track weren't splattered with brand names. But like the artical said, if it's out of place in the setting of the game, it would annoy me to hell. Think about Oblivion with ads for Burger King!

The upshot of this might be more games in modern settings where they can ram as many ads in as they like. Not a good idea to get into the heads of money mad arseholes like EA.

Has anyone seen the constantly changing posters in Rainbow Six: Vegas. I think there's a "300" one there now.

I noticed that too. Honestly, when it's a game like that, I have no problem with unobtrusive ads. While I like when art departments mock up fake posters and billboards (like GTA or The Darkness,) oftentimes a well placed movie one-sheet adds a level of unconscious realism to the right game. I mean, at least in Vegas a 300 poster (I saw ones for Smokin Aces too) would be a lot less out of place than, say, an ad for the latest top-of-the-line Dodge truck or Nokia cell phone in some poor-ass bombed out Mexican hellhole neigborhood a la GRAW.

Bottom line, if you're gonna do it, do it right.
