So its basically a rip-off of Animal Crossing
and a rip-off of DS lite.

Way to be ahead of the times Sony.

And is anybody else there with me when I say what the hell is this crap? Is this Sony's idea of a plan?
Talk about non-hardcore!
Is anyone excited about Home?

The PS3 is slowly fading off my radar, and I predict I won't even have to read much about it soon. Look at its numbers. How can Sony even pretend they're gonna reach their goals? The PS3 is a lemon.

I think you are looking at HOME the wrong way. They are making a GUI for your buddy list with an area for the general public. The main focus is to meet up and jump into a game together. HOME is not a place to just log in and hang out, though you still could if you really wanted to.
The whole focus is meeting people and playing games together.

did you learn nothing from the original Playstation? Or did you actually stick w/ dreamcast? lol

And frankly, because demand was so exceeding supply back in Christmas (we didn't catch up until February), people were really just settling for the 20GB version because they couldn't get the 60GB.

LMAO...zomg sony is HILARIOUS!

Anyhow sure Sony has made some slip ups but what company hasnt? And I seriously think people are way out of line for bashing the new PSP, when everyone praised the DS Lite

@loungemonkey:
I don't know about where you live, but where I live, PS3s were readily available soon after Christmas passed. At the Fry's Electronics I used to work at, we had about 80 in stock at the beginning of January. And they did not move fast.

It is quite funny when Sony reps talk about "meeting demand" at any point post-holidays or post-launch. Since soon after, demand quickly dried up.
Obviously, people are still buying the system, but at a much slower pace than the folks at Sony would like. It is continuously outsold by 360 in America, and outsells 360 by a ~10k margin each week.

I don't totally understand Sony's strategies with casual stuff on the PS3. Sure, there are some people getting the system as a blu-ray player primarily and will buy a few lighter games, like Singstar, or get into Home a bit. There are also some more casual gamers that just have the money and will get the system.

But, the vast majority of people that are willing to spend $500+ on a Playstation console are the ones looking for hardcore games. Drake's, Lair, and Heavenly all look good and fairly hardcore, but the system at its price needs some big time RPG's, shooters, and racers. It doesn't need Home and Singstar.

On a side note I now know how to fashion an Andrew Yoon voodoo doll. Since Andrew is second only to Perez Hilton in the list of "Bloggers I Want to Toss Large Heavy Objects at". Hours and hours of fun!

Then why did they talk so much smack about the Xbox 360 when if first introduced the idea of two skus?

because, unlike the 360 Core, all PS3s come standard with an HDD. developers can take advantage of this, for example to decrease load times (PS3 Oblivion loads much faster than 360 Oblivion).

@ Curmeo & Jesse:
Hard drive wasn't the reason that Sony rep (Harrison? I forgot who said it) criticized there being two 360 models. His reasoning was that multiple models would just confuse people.

Because one 360 has no hard drive. One 360 does.

This limits what developers can do.
Downloadable titles had a 50 meg limit for years. Where PS3 started with 500, and can install features like folding@home to the harddrive. If a dev wants to make a game require the harddrive, they aren't allowed to on 360. But on PS3 they can.

whosmav, nobody else is with you.

If you want to look at non-hardcore, simply look at the Wii.

PS3 have tons of games coming down the pipeline like Heavenly Sword, Lair, Drakes Fortune, Call of Duty 4, GTA IV, Unreal Tournament 3, HL Orange Box, Warhawk, SOCOM Confrontation, GT 5 Prolouge with online play, Tekken DR Online and R&C Tools of Dsstruction.

How anyone can't be excited by that list of games coming out for PS3 is beyond me.

PS3 will do great for the rest of the year.

Maybe I'm a little extreme, but all I mean is that the PS3 sales haven't responded to good game releases for the system. And instead of marketing all the titles you
wave so proudly(and working harder at making them exclusives) Sony continues with this stuff.

I guess I can't hate on Home cause it is free.
And I realize I am no great majority, but I'm not excited about many of those games mentioned. Except maybe GTA4, but I've never felt compelled to finish a
GTA.

The only thing really exciting to me is Corruption, Galaxy, and whatever new surprises nintendo has for me. Whether I'm hooked on a gimmick or whatever, I'm not seeing the PS3 becoming a system I want to own.

But thanks for speaking for everyone

I'm with you, whosmav. Those PS3 titles mave listed bore me. I'll check out CoD4 and GTA4, on the 360. And it's amusing how Sony is saying "oh, we aren't for the casual gamer. Who needs them?" then they spin all of their media and keynotes towards reaching the masses. Well guess what, $500-$600 is too high to reach the masses with what they've got.

The PS3 feels to me like a lot of really good ideas poorly executed. Maybe that's what they get for A) copying others and B) changing course mid-stream ("Who needs rumble"..."We'll have rumble soon"..."It's too cheap!"..."We'll drop the price"..."Consumers want a new model every six months!")

What the heck is a 'value proposition' anyway? Its a term I hear corporates bandy about all day long at work, but is it really an appropriate way to talk about video games that are supposed to be fun and, you know, cool and stuff. This verbal effluent makes me want to vomit, and how many times can he shoehorn that phrase in... its meaningless marketing drivel. My apologies for the vitriol but please Sony if you want people to buy your machines stop talking like that really. Please.

Yello. Don't get discouraged if you're dragged down. It can happen that someone tries to bite your head off. There are those on any of the Defense Forces who can lure the danger to themselves. Of course you shouldn't feel discouraged and think this place is awful. The third room on the right in the Main Mounted Hall of Misery of Joystiq Tower has taken many a poor soul.

Just relax and try not to personally insult anyone.

People won't be excited about those games if they don't understand the difference. They need to see that the games are fun, easy to pick up, and won't steal your life. I think Sony has a great line up that will sell their system to already gamers. Their DLC games are great for the casual crowd, but let's face it - no one's going to buy a $500 system for a $9 game.

Colors? Who in their right mind cares about colors? All I wanted was more battery life. That's it. I don't care if it weighs less, I don't care if it's pathetically smaller, I want more than 4 or so hours of battery life, and they failed. What a massive oversight. I still like my psp, but no aspect of this redesign will make me want to buy a new one. Not one single aspect. With how great the DS redesign was, I was so excited for a redesign of my loud-UMD, 4 hour monster. You fail, Sony. You freaking fail.

You're right Brello they did need to add more battery life. The thing is they got the same life out of a smaller battery so if you use the regular sized one or buy one of the bigger ones the battery life will increase. The only thing is you have to wait for Sony or a third party to release a new cover for it because the old size battery is physically bigger as well so it will stick out a bit. So they did address the battery issue and the colors are icing.

So what if Sony stole Nintendo idea for releasing a PSP lite Nintendo stole the DS lite idea from apple.The ds lite is a Ds dressed up like an ipod.

In fact the wii and the Ds are dressed up like apple products.

IMO this freaking good,the video out-put is cool I wish the Ds had that.Home well as long is free I'm in.

I don't see how Home is anything like Animal Crossing. They use completely different graphical styles, and you do completely different things in it. Home is a glorified chat room. AC was a glorified chore minigame.

And Sony made smaller PS1s before the DS was ever out. Nintendo didn't invent making something smaller you retard.

As someone who owns all three consoles, I find it funny how consoles are beginning to look more like PCs. Every console going forward will have a hard drive or some sort of mass storage capabilities, installing games onto the hard disk (better load times, see PS3) will become more commonplace, there's always going to be "updates" or patches (granted these are easier to find and install via LIVE or PSN, but they're still patches! The other day I had to delete and reinstall a Motorstorm patch just to get the game to load), consoles are becoming more multipurpose, and the cost of development for software and the initial cost of ownership is just getting higher and higher. It wasn't too long ago that many of these factors were negatives for gaming on the PC.

Also, why didn't sony use some sort of flash memory based container instead of UMDs? Granted flash wasn't as cheap then as it is now, but that would be a much better alternative than carrying bulky, slow-loading, fragile discs around.

@FallenCow
Your predictions as to the future of game consoles...kinda misses out on the most popular of the current generation. The Wii manages to dominate WITHOUT a hdd or updates, and has about the same price as every other Nintendo console ever, especially if you count inflation.

@Tahiri
The redesigned ps1 wasn't exactly revolutionary. Nintendo's been releasing redesigned versions of about all their consoles ever since the NES. If you're looking for the originator, though, Atari was the first company I know of to redesign a handheld console, with their "Lynx II", and probably the first redesigned home console, with their various revisions of the Atari 2600, or VCS. Of course, that all depends on your definition of a video game console...
