June NPD: Nintendo WiiDS out competition, industry sales grow 31%
Completely unaware of the abysmal news headlines it would generate, the NPD group has released US video game sales data for the month of June. Painting a familiar picture of Nintendo perched atop a mountain of freshly printed money, the results indicate that prosperity is shared throughout the whole industry. GameDaily.BIZ reports that sales for the month are up by 31% compared to last, with half of the year showing a 43% increase over the first six months of 2006. Console hardware sales notably rose by 69% to $268 million, though portable game hardware dropped by 6%.
Unsurprisingly, the top-selling system for June was the Nintendo DS, followed by waggle wonder Wii. The PSP wedged itself into third place, (thanks April price cut!), right above the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We suspect Sony's behemoth will gain enough momentum from the recent $100-off clearance sale to break through the 100,000 sales barrier next month. That'll teach you, GBA!
The software top 10 also shows a strong Nintendo presence, with the upper spots overrun with pocket monsters and portly plumbers. Mario Party 8 sold just over 426,000 copies, proving a much bigger hit with grandma than Resident Wii-vil, which sold less than Pokémon Battle's 157,000 copies and Forza 2's 197,400 copies. It seems that unlike those dealing with the Xbox 360, third-party Wii publishers can't rely on a "hardcore" audience swooping en masse from one game to the next.

I have a load of unplayed DS games, but i'm mostly using it to play GBA games. Every time i go to the games shop they seem to have a classic old GBA game selling for almost nothing.. and most of them are still awesome fun.
DonWii @ Jul 23rd 2007 8:59PM
Well, it IS an old port. I am surprised it even sold that many.
whosmav @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:04PM
Plus the controls make it completely worth it.
Mario Party 8....is it any good? It got some pretty crappy reviews.
Pretty surprising PSP numbers. If they'd unlock for homebrew I'd totally...blah blah blah...whats the use?
t_m @ Jul 24th 2007 8:29AM
not sure... but watching the mario party adverts on the train to work this morning made it look REALLY fun.. and the graphics plloked pretty good on the 14" lcd screens they have on the trains.
I was mostly thinking "that looks realy fun, i wonder why it got so many bad reviews???"
I have to wonder if a lot of the reason isn't that the developers have played it 7 times before... whereas i'd imagine that the people buying it for the Wii are unlikely to have played a Mario Party game before.
Matters @ Jul 24th 2007 10:57AM
Plus that's only about 10 days worth of sales for RE4 in an especially long months worth of sales data.

Nice Zoolander. What ever are the investigatory game journalists going to do? The different lighting for each animation frame could have been synced a little more but really well. Also could have put Bill Trinnen or someone on the fourth guy.
Neebs @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:56PM
Not my gifs, not my problem :P.
And if that's coming as a shocker to you, then what did you expect? Something ORIGINAL?
NintendoFanbot @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:14PM
The Zoolander gif is FUCKING EPIC
so is the slightly smoother Roxbury one. :P

Evan @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:03PM
But they've always given money!
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:12PM
Inaccurate. Blocks have given coins or power ups not paper bills.
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:05PM
HaHa. GBA still beat PS3 101k vs. 98k. And PS3 was up because June was a 5 week month chart.
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:07PM
It's a big deal since these have traditionally been the dead months and due to Nintendo hardware sales have risen the entire gaming market.
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 24th 2007 9:05AM
Did someone delete that whole block of comments but left this one? Why this one?
Alex @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:15PM
the animated picture is hilarious

How did Nintendo take the news????

Why people say that the PSP is a failure, it's effing selling very good, it's just that the Wii and DS are selling way more, and lookout Xbox 360, PS3 is getting closer despite not having games and costing $600, after this price drop/clearance sale I think we'll see a more closer margin. I have a 360, DS and Wii, but I think it's time for a PS3 and PSP slim.
samfish @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:25PM
The PSP is a failure by the same standards that declared the Xbox and Gamecube failures.
N-Zero @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:22PM
OOO I can hear the sony and MS fanboys runnin over hear ready to bitch. Well Just to say this Wii will own this holiday season. If its selling this month with no good games imagine when Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, and Smash Bros. Brawl comes out. Plus with Wii Fit ( we all know its going to sell a shit load because of non gamers) it will completly own the holiday. OOOOO CRAP the Fanboys their HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
samfish @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:25PM
Shame that Wii Fit isn't going to be out in the US for Christmas, though, huh?
WiNG @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:23PM
lol wewt the PS3 outsold the GBA!
NExt target: DREAMCAST!!
lollserskates
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:47PM
But GBA sold 113k and PS3 sold 98k. Train your brain some more.
ssuk @ Jul 24th 2007 3:25AM
You just make us think SO highly of Sony fanboys...
N-Zero @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:29PM
OO SNAP Samfish I didn't know that. Well it'll probably still own with just MArio Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Brawl this holiday anyway.
dmd @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:52PM
If you look at the statistics, the PSP is actually selling better than the Wii. Nintendo is for kids, and this fact will never let Nintendo be the winner. Sony makes mature games with depth and qaulity. The Wii will never have games like that even if Nintendo owns 95 percent of the market, third parties won't put there triple A games on the system because Nintendo is dumb.
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:56PM
Stock response.
Choose your argument, which you want?
-Wait until [insert a date here]!
-Wait until [insert an over-hyped game] comes out!
-The famous Ferrari argument.
-Wii is a gimmick and can't last long. (Has been said since launch week)
-Our games are better! (showing Game-Rankings of Resistance and comparing with Wii version of crap games like Ant Bully)
-It's only selling because of the price! (conveniently forgetting the price of the GameCube and how it obviously failed sales-wise)
Personally I've always loved #4.
samfish @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:00PM
Well, that settles that. Thanks for schoooling me, dmd.
I hate Nintendo.
Elias @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:01PM
Your logic is flawless
captainawesome @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:14PM
"If you look at the statistics..."
Just what statistics are you looking at? My math must suck, because I'll be damned if I didn't think that 561.9K was more than 290.1K.
Slaziman @ Jul 24th 2007 12:12AM
Though worded like a true idiot, dmd does have a point. The people buying the Wii are not going to buy hardcore epic games unless they contain a known Nintendo franchise. Why would developers put out Resident Evil 4's when they can put retarded minigames and sell more while having lower development costs?
Jenova @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:56PM
Wonder Waggle? Nope, no fanboys here.
Ian Von Porter @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:05PM
The PS3 is over 6x more expensive than GBA... and people are surprised that its selling more?
lol Kia sells 10,000x more than Ferrari.. lol..lol
Anyways.. 270k units of an 7 year old system isnt too bad.. Wii can only hope to sell that many units in SEVEN YEARS! Retailers should clear their PS3 60gb inventory in July... it will outsell 360.
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:09PM
Ho ho lookie what my stock response has in there #3.

Its ok if you have to drive a Kia.. somebody has to.
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:16PM
The reason why it's near impossible to apply the Ferrari argument is that even for most used car dealerships you have to take a loan out to buy one. You have to take out a loan for a Kia but have to take a bigger loan with more security needed to buy a Ferrari. And Ferrari's are more expensive to maintain as well.
We all can't place an entertainment hobby with the same budget as cars you know.
3cubedminus3squared @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:34PM
Too bad the difference between a Wii and PS3 isn't as big as the difference between a Kia and Ferrari.
And unless you're super rich, you can't buy either a Kia or Ferrari with just one paycheck like you can a Wii or PS3.
Vidikron @ Jul 23rd 2007 11:54PM
@hvnlysoldr
Say what you want, but the Wii games are largely crap at the moment. It's certainly a far cry from the 360 and not even any better than the PS3. The price DOES play a huge role here. The Wii has become the McDonalds of gaming. Plain and simple.
