No Splinter Cell Conviction until 2008
Sad news for people who stifle their tears only long enough to sneak up on terrorists and choke them to death: A recent UbiSoft fiscal report says that Conviction isn't due until the fourth quarter of UbiSoft's fiscal year (read: Between January and March of '08). More of the financial report is available here, if you're interested.
We weren't terribly surprised that we wouldn't be getting to play Conviction this year, as we assumed Microsoft would have been trumpeting it in its all-2007 lineup at E3 if possible. We are, however, still a little sad that we won't get to gather around the Yule Log and experience the inner torment of emo Sam Fisher.

After both hating Double Agent, and casting an eye over the PS3/360 lineup for the remainder of they year, I can find the will to carry on.
manford @ Jul 24th 2007 5:26PM
Ubi prolly figured out that they to 'refine' the game a bit more after seeing how MGS4 is coming along.
GodisaMyth @ Jul 24th 2007 5:30PM
And the developers say that this game cannot be done on the PS3.
Yet, here we are, today, watching MGS4 gameplay blow away what we have seen so far with SC.
Bloo @ Jul 24th 2007 5:44PM
The developers never said that. Please get a life. Can't I enjoy MGS4 without you making stupid comments about it? Of course MGS4 is going to destroy Conviction. Does that mean Conviction will be bad? No.
AirIntake @ Jul 24th 2007 5:52PM
Too bad MGS still has retarded enemies that can only see 6 feet in front of them.
GodisaMyth @ Jul 24th 2007 5:52PM
Yes they did. They said it in a Game Informer Exclusive interview about 3 issues ago.
Bloo @ Jul 24th 2007 5:55PM
It was built from the ground up to be an exclusive for the 360. It was never intended to be a PS3 game. Shhh...
Jake @ Jul 24th 2007 6:14PM
Yeah, and devs have said many games on PS3 can't be done on 360, yet can't make anything that looks as good as Gears. The two systems have different strengths and weaknesses. Games built from the ground up for either system "won't work on other system". That is what happens when you have two consoles with near identical capabilities and hardware finalized at the same time.
deaftly @ Jul 24th 2007 7:15PM
funny that splinter cell will actually provide enemies with actual A.I., unlike mgs4 , maybe thats just not possible on the ps3
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 24th 2007 5:31PM
UE3 problems...
Yeah I'm not into stealth or stealth action. Although I can be patient I can't handle the anxiety and blow it every time. I'm also not very good at stealth.
mr nimblewick @ Jul 24th 2007 5:31PM
I, for one, welcome our new emo overlords.
kinshadow @ Jul 24th 2007 5:38PM
All you emos belong to us?
Someone set us up the Prozac!
waves @ Jul 24th 2007 8:22PM
Why does everyone think bums are emo?
ill trooper @ Jul 24th 2007 5:33PM
Ubi hasn't met a 'Tom Clancy' series (Splinter Cell, Rainbow 6, Ghost Recon) release date since I bought my first xBox in anticipation of Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow.
I always buy, play, and usually love the games once they do make it into my hands, but I don't even listen to their initial date announcements anymore.
alexy @ Jul 24th 2007 5:39PM
smart move if you ask me...Why in hell would ubisoft release this game on the same month as Assassin's Creed?..(made by Ubisoft too)...with all the big games
SplinterCell will be overshadowed....and thats bad...so smart move......also....This saves another $70 hole in my wallet hahaha
Grindstone @ Jul 24th 2007 6:05PM
I agree with this being good news for us. This fall is already crowded with great games, so one less is better financially for me, especially going into Xmas mode.
Rubix42 @ Jul 24th 2007 5:39PM
Ah well, thankfully many other games are coming out, something to keep the games rollling come 2008 is good news to me!
And let's cut the MGS references. Sure, they are the same genre, but MGS is all about super confusing storylines and horrible dialog. At least Splinter Cell is well written. (In comparison, not in a literary sense)
waves @ Jul 24th 2007 8:24PM
Was that last part English? Or were you speaking in code?
clerkenwell @ Jul 24th 2007 5:41PM
I don't think MGS4 is even on their radar. To be honest, from the recent gameplay trailer for MGS, it seems as if the series is finally catching up with the genre evolutions introduced by the first Splinter Cell years ago. Ubisoft is once again trying to push the genre into new territory and if it takes them a few extra months to do that, then by all means we as gamers should cut them some slack and be optimistic about the ambitious steps they are taking.
And for the record, yes Double Agent sucked.
AirIntake @ Jul 24th 2007 6:04PM
The Xbox 1 version didn't suck. And I picked it up for $7 CAD in a Wal-Mart bin a couple months ago.
tommy @ Jul 24th 2007 5:44PM
this a bit of a relief to me... my biggest problem this year is how am i to afford so many incredible looking 360 games, with this and Unreal Tournament 3 being a timed exclusive i might just afford to eat this year
Diskoboy @ Jul 24th 2007 5:56PM
So am I the only one who sees a Breakfast Club joke, in that picture?
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 24th 2007 6:15PM
Yes it's only you. Every time someone asks that question it's always them.
JonnyBoy2U @ Jul 24th 2007 6:23PM
So as a recent buy of the 360 Elite should this be a game on my "Must Have" list? Or at the very least my "Must Investigate" list?
P.S. Emo...thats NOT whats hot in the streets.
ill trooper @ Jul 24th 2007 11:01PM
What you should do: ignore Splinter Cell: Double Agent for a while, and go buy a now extremely-affordable copy of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for the xBox and play that on the 360. The 360 up-rezzes the game to 720p resolution at the 3d polygon stage (not simply up-rezzing a 480p image) and it looks amazing, probably as good as SC: Double Agent (a native 360 game).
It's a better "Splinter Cell" game, and it's super cheap right now. Then if you like it, play Double Agent.
Jake @ Jul 24th 2007 6:32PM
SC is a very good series. It has done a ton with the stealth genre. It sells well and is rated well by critics.
MGS is a great series. It sells a bit better and is rated a bit better and obviously has more history.
But it isn't like MGS absolutely crushes SC in every possible way. It is marginally better. SC has deeper gameplay and enemies that aren't absolutely 100% blind and retarded. I just barely prefer MGS over SC. In addition, the new SC seems more daring than the new MGS with respect to tweaking the formula. I have seen one video and feel like I've already played MGS4 twice, only now with camo.
So stop being retarded and trying to say SC sucks because MGS is great. I like to play more than 4 games per year, so I have to once in a while play a game that isn't the best in that genre that year according to critics or virgin fanboys. Plus, there will have been two or three SC games in the time it has taken to get from MGS3 to MGS4.
And honestly, that gameplay video of MGS4 was not THAT damn good. The enemies are fucking blind. You can pause the game, go through a menu, and select a camoflouge. So, as if it was too hard to find a shadow or cover like in real life, now you just have to pause the game and turn on camo. That is a step backwards in my book, even if it does look cool.
I just didn't see anything in that video that looked super fun. When your enemies are blind and you can pause for instant cover, what the hell is the point? And am I the only one that expects MGS Online to be a direct ripoff of SC online?
I mean, who is who's bitch now.
Jake @ Jul 24th 2007 6:33PM
It is pretty decent. If you like MGS, you'll most likely like SC. A lot of people absolutely hate this kind of game, though. It's all stealthy and stuff.
alexy @ Jul 24th 2007 8:03PM
I see MGS as a system seller not for its game play but its story, Its the Last of the Seires and therfore its a must buy for fans. MGS Does have an older story and
SC is still pretty new (compared to MG series)
and Ubisoft pretty much rushed most of its sequels...
+the Camo use in MGS4 is alittle reminiscent that of
SplinterCell(1)'s Hide in the Dark system...with the guage and sight....MGS4's gameplay looks like its a syntethic of MGS3+SplinterCell...which kind of disappoints me....but non to less..MGS4 is a GREAT game...
Ubisoft is just taking a bigger step from hide in the dark stealth (blend with surroundingsto Hide in the Crowd(blend in with people)
Alex S. @ Jul 25th 2007 8:58AM
When I was watching the gameplay video for MGS4 I got the feeling that Hideo was taking a lot of elemnts from other games he's praised or been compared to. For instance Hideo saying he likes Gears of War gives us the little icon on the bottom of the screen showing what move is going to be performed upon pushing triangle. Splinter Cell gives us crouched movement, and the over the shoulder aiming that can change sides(while still allowing movement).
zwarrior @ Jul 24th 2007 8:04PM
The tage of the article is misspelled. the "slintercell" is missing its p.
Or you guys could cleverly change it to "slithurcell" because of the whole emo look going on with the game.
Obie @ Jul 24th 2007 8:42PM
Am I the only one burnt out on the Splinter Cell series?
This one needs to take a break and reboot Tomb Raider style IMO.
Bearxor @ Jul 24th 2007 9:21PM
I'm excited. So many games coming out this fall, I'm happy to save this money for next year for this as it's a must buy for me!
Larry @ Jul 25th 2007 3:36PM
Smart idea to move this game to a less crowded time.
