Politically correct BS? Do you really think it's appropriate for the word "retard" to be in a mario game? because that's exactly what "spastic" means over here.

anyway, i work at a checkout in a supermarket- yesterday, a woman wanted to buy Mind Quiz. a message popped up on the till saying that the game had been withdrawn from sale- now i know why.

Yeah, I'm gonna be honest. I don't care. In fact, political correctness is on the list of things I care least about, right below Britney Spears.

Example: African American. Fuck you. I'll call them black. Calling a black person African American is assuming several things (such as, that they are from Africa).

The only time I care in the slightest about censoring my choice of words is in front of young children. Otherwise, bite me.

It depends. Some people hear words aimed at them, or their beloved ones, in a degoraty way so often, that they may find it really offensive. I can't even call my fat co-worker fat without her trowing a tantrum.

spastic has always been considered a pretty offensive word in the uk. I remember some kid at our school getting suspended for using it.. and that was about 20 years ago.

I think it's also a matter of culture. In the USA spastic is not really offensive but maybe in England or Ireland or Australia is. Jut like a lot of British insults would not seem insulting to an American.

For instance. Would you feel insulted if I called you a "naff pillock"? Probably not. I don't pretend to be acquainted with the slang, but I'd bet if you called someone from the UK something along those line's you'd get a matching string of profanity in response.

I don't think most people find the term offensive, but I think it could be insensitive to the people who actually suffer from spasms. Using spastic as a derogatory term when many people are involuntarily spastic is the issue here.

My British sources have told me that it's something on the equivalent of calling someone retarded over here, not particularly nice

It is odd that it is still the top-selling game, it was really the formative stage of Wii Mario Parties (that is, bad) when they do 9, it should vastly outpace this

Why does everything have to be a controversy? If everyone would just give the idiot special interest groups the proper amount of respect and attention (as in NONE), then we wouldn't have to worry about this crap.

So some people are offended by 'spastic'. (Apparently it is akin to saying 'retarded' in the UK, wikipedia is your friend. ) Who cares? People get offended every day, It's part of life!

I can't believe Nintendo actually paid attention to this.

Yes. I actually bought it (Loved MP1+2, never played since then) and returned it. It is BAD. Minigames are fun, yes, but the rest of the game's execution is abysmal. My biggest gripe comes with the lack of widescreen support. Sure, the game 'supports' it, like Wii games are required, but their definition of supports is including letterboxing at a software level, instead of a hardware level. Ugh.

A bit of one, a bit of the other. It depends on the minigames you get.

I'd suggest renting it to find out, and before you go plunking down $50 on it, think about how often you can get three friends and yourself together to play (it's not fun in SP, or with bots, which is practically the same thing).

The game wasn't made for you. So shut the fuck up and stop bitching about it.

Of course you're not going to like it. You hate the Wii. You hate the fact that graphics aren't that important to the rest of us. You hate that Mario Party 8 is simply a fun game that doesn't require you to shoot someone every 5 seconds or use "stealth" to acheive some random goal.

But I suppose it's a good thing for Nintendo they have an army of fanboys like yourself to buy any old crap they decide to release with Mario on the cover.

You think the game sucks because its on the Wii. NOT because its a bad game.

Every single game that comes out you bash. And it ALWAYS the same bullshit from you sony trolls.

1) Horrible graphics
2) Gimmicky controls
3) More of the same.

Guess what!? The Wii was NEVER MEANT TO BE A GRAPHICS powerhouse. The most it can do as everyone knows by now is 480p. Yet you guys keep bitching about graphics and how your precious ps3 games would never look as good as they do on the Wii. But you know what? We ALREADY KNOW THAT. We don't care. Moving on...

The controls for most Wii games make sense. I haven't yet come across a game that I've found challenging or extremely hard to get used to. Save Red Steel all the controls have made sense and added a new dimenson/flavor to the games. Even if it adds only a LITTLE bit of motion control or utilizes the Wiimote in a small way I think and I'm sure most Wii owners agree that its WORTH IT.

Last but not least if its not broke don't fix it. WHY IN THE HELL WOULD NINTENDO RADICALLY CHANGE THE GAME FROM PREVIOUS VERSIONS IF MOST PEOPLE LIKED IT AS IS!? Some games do need major changes. Some do require new additions or unique changes. But Mario Party is NOT one of them. Is it that hard to understand? I've played all Mario Parties and they're not that serious. I don't expect Nintendo to do a massive overhaul of the game. So no it doesn't matter if the game is basically the same when it comes to gameplay. There was NOTHING wrong to begin with when it came to the basic games.

Its Mario Party. You play it to have fun with friends. I played it. I had fun.

Mission Accomplished. Go Nintendo. Move on sony trolls.

Once again hardcore gamers like you think that everyone revolves around you and therefore Nintendo must do everything YOU want but thats NOT the case nor will it ever be.

I mostly agree with everything you say here except that MP8 is a good game. It's broken, the boards are uninspired, and the controls are wonky at best. I'm looking forward to MP9, hopefully it can deliver the way Madden, Tiger Woods, SSX Blur, RE4, and others have in the controls dept.

I seriously enjoyed all the Mario Party games previous to 8 - only bought two of them, but I've played them all. I'm glad I rented MP8 first.

One thing needs to be pointed out once again - Nintendo does not make Mario Party games, they are developed by Hudson and always have been. So, whether criticizing or praising, remember that Nintendo isn't the one responsible. Actually, while I enjoy these games, I can guarantee they would be a hell of a lot more interesting and polished if they actually were developed 1st party. Also, that pun was unintentional.

The game is awful

I played it in a store for a while, and asked the guy if it was a demo, since it seemed so poorly done.

No, it was the full final version.

The game takes everything you love about Mario Party and rapes it, hard.

And no I happen to like plenty of dumb minigames. This one however, is not FUN. I would rather play chu chu rocket for 50 hours straight than get this game for free.

Read the reviews too. This game blows, period.

Luckily it is not as bad as Tamagachi: Party On! or Farcry. Barely.

1) Crappy graphics with a capitol K
1a) Bland environments, slow AI, just crap, crap, and more CRAP
2) Tacked on wave arms around like an epileptic control
3) Mario ______, and mini-game ___, and Mario ___, and Mario___
4) And paying $250 dollars for a Game Cube with a new IPOD white paint job.

Spastic does NOT mean "person literally suffering from spasms" as some over-zealous dictionary.com users seem to think. It's a term for persons with cerebral palsy (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spastics_Society) the symptoms of which do include but are not limited to spasms.

Whether or not you find it personally offensive, it IS when used to describe someone as stupid. Labelling an individual with cerebral palsy as "retarded" is grossly offensive and inaccurate, since a lack of motor function does not make someone stupid by default.

So yes, Nintendo were wrong to use the word in the game and right to recall it. Good thing that Mario Party 8 is crap anyway.

Do you even know what the supposedly offensive line was? It wasn't used to describe a person as stupid. It wasn't, in fact, used to describe a person at all. The line was:

"Magikoopa magic! / Turn the train spastic! / Make this ticket tragic!"

Unless there are locomotives suffering from cerebral palsy that I am unaware of, I think it's a bit of an overreaction. Even if it must be considered off-limits for use to refer to people, surely it's still a perfectly valid word for an object with erratic, energetic movement? If people consider that offensive, then so, presumably would be a game in which you pull a lever to "retard" the flow of a chemical, or maybe African Americans who consider "black" to be offensive should start objecting to its use to refer to the color of objects. Where would you draw the line?

Excellent comment, Tyson.

It's absurd to think that words which should be perfectly fine to use in every day conversation are now being taken offensively, to the point of recalling and editing a product on such a mass scale.

Well, if you don't know the difference between the noun 'retard' and the verb 'retard' that is hardly my problem. However, 'spastic' movement exclusively refers to people and not an inanimate object like a train, so it's not really the same thing.

Where would I draw the line? Well... since the word 'black' doesn't offend anyone most of the time, but 'spastic' causes offence in virtually all contexts (when used in the UK) then that's a good place to start.

But then again, if it doesn't offend you, then surely it couldn't offend anyone! Ass.
