America's Army coming to arcades
If there's one thing you learn by watching an hour of G4, it's that Adam Sessler never ages. If there's a second thing you learn, it's that, judging by the commercials, the U.S. Army loves gamers. Maybe it's their quick hand-eye coordination, their familiarity with technology or the fact that they apparently have nothing better to do, who knows? Not only is Uncle Sam getting the word out through G4, there's also America's Army, the game designed with the hopes of drawing in new recruits. Now Global VR has announced that the title will soon be spreading to arcades. We've got to say, it's a little unfortunate that the Army didn't think of this in the '80s when arcades were populated by beefy teens of all stripes. As it stands, we're a little concerned about having our freedom protected by a bunch of so-pale-they're-see-through DDR kids. On the plus side, the arcade version won't require any human shooting, just targets, so even the lil' tykes can get totally pumped about joining up.
[Thanks, Matt]

Sometime within the next 20 years, good FPS players are going to be courted by the military to control their new line of robotic soldiers and other machines of war.
Konny @ Jul 25th 2007 10:22AM
That's probably true and f*cking scary.. i just hope they dont invade Canada anytime soon.
doomcloud @ Jul 25th 2007 10:22AM
yeah cuz those people would be far too fat to do the killing themselves
Muu @ Jul 25th 2007 11:59AM
So you're saying in 20 years, we won't have treaties over usage of Weapons of Mass Destruction, but rather over whether the robotic soldiers are using AimBots?
PhilOnGames @ Jul 25th 2007 1:18PM
Does this remind anybody else of that movie, "The Last Starfighter"? I wonder if you get the highest score at your arcade, do some special forces dudes show up to your house, and take you to Iraq to fight?
doomcloud @ Jul 25th 2007 2:27PM
i would have also excepted the move Toys for the win
Yoshi @ Jul 25th 2007 10:23AM
Uncle Same?
Christopher Grant @ Jul 25th 2007 10:33AM
He's Uncle Sam's twin brother ... or a typo. It's been fixed.
Yoshi @ Jul 25th 2007 10:34AM
Well he is the Same as Uncle Sam, is he not?
Ok... I admit it... That was BAD.
Shawn D @ Jul 25th 2007 10:36AM
I guess someone has to fight for big oil....
Rob Accomando @ Jul 25th 2007 10:37AM
Looks like a murder simulator to me.
john @ Jul 25th 2007 10:43AM
Before they can deploy these they'll have to send in the Army Corps of Engineers to do some reconstruction on the nations beleaguered arcades. That or build a time machine and take us all back to 1990,

"Sometime within the next 20 years, good FPS players are going to be courted by the military to control their new line of robotic soldiers and other machines of war"
Never going to happen. The US Army prefers living, minimally armored soldiers right now simply because it's cost effective. Having folks die ALWAYS is more cost effective, and that's never going to change.
Matt B @ Jul 25th 2007 11:41AM
How can having people die be more cost effective? It is a waste of hundreds of thousands of dollars in training. With the increase in research by DARPA for unmanned vehicles and drones, soldiers are the only thing left to replace.
david @ Jul 25th 2007 11:18AM
Rob Accomando looks like an idiot to me.
try to read next time... "the arcade version won't require any human shooting, just targets"... idiot
COME ON!
Jose @ Jul 25th 2007 11:24AM
It'd better not take any friggin' quarters. I shouldn't have to pay for propaganda. It should also be free.
Martez @ Jul 25th 2007 11:20AM
Oh boy! This looks... fun?
Harlo @ Jul 25th 2007 11:30AM
What is this arcade you speak of?
Chameleon @ Jul 25th 2007 12:08PM
heh, don't know why that made me laugh
Crono @ Jul 25th 2007 12:11PM
I think they have them in japan.
horngreen @ Jul 25th 2007 11:38AM
Had an armada of asteroids attacked in the 80s I would have been ready! This goes to show you the government doesn't have plans anytime soon to stop starting wars. I can't wait to hear some kid in 20 years telling the media how hes was tricked into joining and wondering why the enemy consist of actual people and not digital targets.
The Wicker Man @ Jul 25th 2007 11:50AM
I want to know why my tax dollars keep going to this shit. Keith David, and all that crappy fake metal must cost the government a pretty penny. Advertising the armed forces is like advertising toilet paper and tampons. People just know its there. I understand a little bit of advertising to keep recruitment up, but you know these things cost a pretty penny.
Sidepocket @ Jul 25th 2007 11:57AM
Gee, is the Army behind the times?
I guess so, because someone forgot to tell them....ARCADES ARE DEAD IN AMERICA!!!
Unless they are trying to recruit in Japan, which makes no sense.
Why do I have a feeling that David Perry designed this? :D
Word of the street. @ Jul 25th 2007 5:08PM
Well how else are they going to distribute it?,If it was a retail game no one would buy it since this kind of games are more likely to suck.
If it was Free or it cost less than 5$ DLG maybe...
IMO they should stick with the ads, like the ones in Socom FTB.
Rob Accomando @ Jul 25th 2007 12:35PM
David, you look like an idiot to me because you took my comment as being serious. Next time, think before you post insults.
daCuk @ Jul 25th 2007 2:12PM
Now you can kill civilians for just 2 quarters....
Word of the street. @ Jul 25th 2007 5:00PM
I want to see JT arguing about this game...
