Inafune says Dead Rising 2 not in production
Mmmmm, angry brains. Despite what we've been told, apparently Dead Rising 2 is not in production according to a Game Informer interview with producer Keiji Inafune. Inafune says that it is something he would "love" to make, but his responsibilities at the moment don't allow for that kind of time. He says Dead Rising 2 is a title being considered by Capcom Japan and if they announce it, he would want to produce, but he doesn't clearly state that the game is on hold because he wants to be the one to do it.Sad news for Dead Rising fans who were probably expecting an announcement that the sequel would be around sometime late next year. Despite being successful in the States and Europe, Inafune's Dead Rising and Lost Planet didn't do so well in Japan. Maybe it's time for Microsoft to apply a little pressure with Capcom on behalf of those who don't really care about Monster Hunter Freedom 2 and want a little more Frank West in their life ... we know MS knows how to spend money for what they want.

The 72 hour mode pissed me off. I hate be on a time limit in games. The first game could have been so much better.
Tony @ Jul 26th 2007 1:58PM
The first game was pretty great for what it was, though. A sequel to address its issues and further evolve the game play is something I'd be very happy about.
samfish @ Jul 26th 2007 2:18PM
Didn't Inafune say he wanted to make a Mega Man game like Dead Rising?
Thajust seems soooso, so very wrong, to me.
Dead Rising is great. Mega Man is great...ish. Well, good, at least. Generally...in a hit-'n'-miss kinda way.
But that's not the point! Together, they would be like two pretty people giving birth to one FUGLY baby.

I was really looking forward to this....Here's hoping this gets made, and I get a little bit more closure than Frank yelling uncontrollably.

microsoft has a firm grip on the hardcore market..
they own online, they've got halo 3, and loads of other traditional gamer games...
i just don't think they're willing to pay for something like dead rising 2... they want the big names and mass appeal games that sony had last generation, the biggest of which being gta 3...
it's odd to see how japanese devs are making games that are selling in the us market, but not their own...
i mean... can you imagine a japanese developer making a game and only releasing it in the us?
sounds crazy, but i think that's the reality of where gaming is going, given the ds and wii's low tech ownership of japan... the 360 went nowhere there, and the ps3 is being outsold 6-1... many of these developers might continue making hardcore games just for americans since the market has disappeared in japan...
neely @ Jul 26th 2007 2:36PM
That's too bad. Dead Rising has done extremely well. Especially considering the market size of the XBOX 360 at this point (compared to last gen consoles). I always figured anything that moved a million units was a "hit".
Capcom FY06 Reported sales:
Dead Rising - Japan (80K units)
Dead Rising - US (740K units)
Dead Rising - Europe (410K units)
That's 1.23 million units worlwide! Heck, there is a small chance it'll hit 1 million unit in just the US if they keep selling for the next few months.
FWIW
Same things goes for Lost Planet. It's at 1.37 million unit worldwide thus far.

Good, no sequel. Developers should concentrate on creating more original IPs. Give the sequels a break.
Just because a game is successful, doesn't mean you have to rush out a sequel. That's what's wrong with the industry.
IlyaG @ Jul 26th 2007 3:06PM
I would like a sequel because I have never played the original game, and the reason I don't just go out and buy the original game is because I've read far too many complaints about it, complaints that would naturally be on top of the list of things they will address in a sequel.
Luis @ Jul 26th 2007 3:38PM
Aww man! I was hoping they would make the sequel be located in a flea market instead of mall. That would be funny.
Laggy @ Jul 27th 2007 6:34AM
Perhaps a flea market in Montgomery?
Mr Khan @ Jul 26th 2007 3:40PM
They certainly shouldn't rush out a sequel, but i feel if a game is good, it should be copied
The only thing about sequelization i resent is when developers start talking sequels before the first game is even properly out, such as Microsoft/Epic (Gears) and Sony/Ninja Theory (Heavenly Sword)
sequels come too quickly, but this game should get one, especially since it would be easy (the game was confined largely to one locale, it would be easy to tweak the mechanics and set it in another locale)
Dirk Dorkelson @ Jul 26th 2007 4:03PM
I loved Dead Rising. It's probably the most fun I've had on the 360. But that doesn't mean I have to have a Dead Rising 2. In some ways, I'd rather see them put their efforts into a new IP. It's not like the game ended on a huge cliffhanger, anyway. And most of the starting points I can think of based on the end of the first game seem kind of forced and lame.
I'd be more interested in seeing a sequel to Lost Planet, with a better story, split-screen play and more multiplayer modes than the first game.
Mr Khan @ Jul 26th 2007 4:15PM
Well the stories certainly don't have to have any kind of continuity, not with a story like Dead Rising
It could be a lot like Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy II, where it wasn't even in the same world, or from Pokemon Gold and Silver to Ruby and Sapphire, which had no immediate links to the prior worlds
Grant @ Jul 26th 2007 4:04PM
well, i'm pissed.
I was really looking forward to this.
Now i could blame the japanese for having no taste and only liking games involving raping young teenage girls with tentacles, cooking, or rolling shit up; but i'm sure the reason for the games not doing well is because no one has a damn 360 to play it on.
They really need to stop being so damn proud and mostly purchasing domestic goods, because it's not like they can afford a PS3 any better than the rest of the world(except for the little pre-launch price break Sony gave them), and then they don't even have any damn games to play on the thing.
DWells55 @ Jul 26th 2007 4:11PM
Sigh... I really liked the first one too. A sequel with some sort of online mode would've been amazing.
Rob Accomando @ Jul 26th 2007 6:27PM
Once you got to level 20+, the save spots were a non-issue. At least for me.
Part 2 will be a day one purchase for me if and when they ever decide to make it.
BananaBoat @ Jul 26th 2007 7:51PM
I was kinda dissapointed with Dead Rising once I realized that either a Sword, a Chainsaw, or a Gun were your only real options for fighting later in the game. Other than that though, I think if they could do a Dead Rising in a setting that is a little bit less...claustrophobic than a mall (like in a city, for example) I'd be ready for round 2. In game 1 I was always like "ARG, GET AWAY FROM ME YOU DAMN ZOMBIES!!!" which really isn't my favorite style of gameplay. I'd rather get my weapons ready, and THEN take on the zombies, instead of taking them on and then getting weapons during. I realize that was the point of the game though, so meh
baby sea tuna @ Jul 27th 2007 11:43AM
You're in luck, sir, for there are numerous Resident Evil games just for you.
Brad Lee @ Jul 28th 2007 3:11PM
I usually frown when I hear of all the sequels in video games, but if there is one game that definitely should have a sequel it's Dead Rising.
The game was just so original for using one of the most cliche premises in history (hordes of zombies AAHHH!).
But there would be so much potential coolness in a sequel.
They could enhance the photography option in the game, since (despite being a photojournalist) taking pictures really wasn't a big part of the game.
Imagine if you could set up a tripod, set the camera to take pictures in a few seconds, and then run up to some zombies and smash them right in the face with a bench at just the right moment. That alone could add a few hours of fun, especially if you could share your pics with friends.
Even better, imagine a robust online mode where you and a bunch of friends have to save people from hordes of zombies. Or a better survival mode that's more about surviving and less about sitting around twiddling your fingers.
Dead Rising did have some problems, but the potential for a sequel has my head spinning. Let's hope it happens.
