HD-DVD is dead according to these guys:-
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/soapbox/soap060107.html

Even crooks wont touch it :-
http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/25/thieves-choose-blu-ray-over-hd-dvd-in-mass-disc-heist/

When will HD-DVD supporters learn, gosh! The writing is pretty much on the wall now... 1st Blockbuster, then Traget.. you can be sure the rest will follow.
Despite the paper thin arguments made here that this is no big deal (Denial the Iarqi info Minister would be proud of), the message these retailers are giving to both movie studio's and consumers is DONT INVEST IN HD-DVD! It seems Sony's aggressive stratagy of including Blu-Ray out of the box with ps3 was right.
HD-DVD has only laster this long becaus of Universal, and you can bet the farm they will go neutral next year.
Unlike HD-DVD, Blu-Ray's success is down to it breaking out of the small AV-enthusiast market to a wider audience via the ps3. Its DVD/PS2 all over again .
HD-DVD has lost, its time for you to move on.

You don't even have to add the HD-DVD player, just the WiFi dongle for the 360 makes it as expensive as the (for now) $500 PS3. But the games and online kick the PS3 to the curb.

Everyone loves to mention the VHS vs Betamax war, even if they weren't even alive back then, but it's important to note while they lost the home market (partly because Beta SP mode was only 1 hour) they all but dominated the professional world, ie, TV studios and professional outlets of the like. Also MiniDisc was used by a lot of radio stations.

I would agree that while Blu-Ray will win (and become "the new laserdisc") digital distribution is the real future. If only it were cheaper... One thing's for sure, Cable companies need some competition and FAST. Talk about a crappy monopoly.

Yea...um this isn't true at all. BluRay bought an endcap to display their overpriced junk on - how does that equal exclusivity? Facts. They really do make or break a good article.

Oh and speaking of facts...one thing Target really DID pull off their shelves last year: UMD discs. Another failed Sony media we no longer have to see in our local Target stores.

Target FTW!

Stop comparing PS3 to PS2 because it doesnt work.

PS2 didnt debut at $500-$600.

PS2 didnt do insane numbers until it broke the well known $200 price barrier

DVD players didnt do insane numbers until they broke the $200 price barrier.

PS3 is doing lousy numbers and is still $500 entry. BD players are $500 entry and are also doing badly - all brands and all models of BD standalone players combined are outsold by a large margin by

Total lifetime PS2 sales is about 120M units worldwide

Lifetime DVD players is around 120M units IN JUST THE US ALONE - the disc playback market is far bigger than the console audience, aka even if PS3 can reach the success of the PS2 (which is about as highly dubious as it can get, already) it STILL pales in comparison to the total DVD market.

I don't even think they would be allowed to do this in the UK.

I've yet to hear of any Blu-Ray movies that look better than the HD-DVD ones, or of any movie that wouldn't fit onto a HD-DVD disk. They are both more expensive than DVD, really theres not much in it.

In terms of studios they will go wherever the customer is, There is already talk in Europe of looking into the legality of backing one format (that may pay higher licensing fees) over another identically specced but cheaper format.

Lastly HD-DVD is region free, you can get a lot of the Blu-Ray exclusives on HD-DVD in Europe due to publishing rights.

Technically all the Blu-Ray has is slightly larger storage and more DRM.

Years away from anyone being declared a "winner" The entire original Star Trek TV series has just been anounced only on HD-DVD, and its all in High Definition.

The StarWars Trilogy will only be coming on Blu-Ray (Fox) Star Wars will sway a lot of people to Blu-Ray, more so than Star Trek I think.
Another big mover will be Die Hard 4.0 (Fox BL Exclusive).

Lets talk about whats happening today, now rather than what MAY happen "later on".

Besides the last comment that Lucasfilm made (only a little while ago) on the issue was "Lucasfilm Ltd. has no plans to release any of the Star Wars movies on Blu-ray or HD DVD. Listings on Amazon.com or any other Web site are purely speculative and erroneous."

Star Trek's not out till November (Blu-Ray release expected in new year), so I guess your not talking about today either, huh!
Starwars has not been anounced yet but you can bet it will be, just to kill HD-DVD off! My point is HD-DVD will never get starwars.
Another one is Indiana Jones, another major movie franchise only on Blu-Ray (include No.4 next year)
I'm not sure if Die Hard 4.0 has been anounced yet but I have a trailer of it from PSN so it must be coming out soon.
Another important exclusive for me is Evil Dead 2, only on BR.

HD-DVD is nackered.

Star Trek has a release date for HD-DVD, I haven't seen any Blu-Ray announcement, but the fact that its a DVD/HD-DVD combo will make it very enticing.

At the end of the day a Blu-Ray player is twice as expensive as a HD-DVD player, yet the picture quality and sound quality is identical.

People won't buy the more expensive system because its "currently" supported by more/different studios.
Its down to price, Obviously the DVD forum has a lot more up its sleave than just US film companies, which seems to be the only card Sony have to play.

repaermirg: Again you are so full of it! Star Wars might be coming to Blu-ray but Star Wars is owned by LUCAS ARTS not Fox and if it releases in an HD format (Lucas has said he has no plans as of now) it will be on both formats. Will you just stop talking already!
