Oh shit! Casablanca's on HD-DVD? Man, I love that movie. Now they just need to bring out The Big Sleep...

I'd pick the top 5 most popular movies in each category, and then probably sell them on eBay. There is NOTHING in those lists that interests me.

Ebay is inundated with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies from these offers. The worst is Tallidaga Nights which came free with the PS3. It's basically un-sellable.

just leave the hd add on alone... in a year HD players (Standalone without having to have your 360 whiring away) will be this price or less and with better spec

I mean a year can't hurt, and by then the prices of the films themselve may start dropping.

Me? I'll buy a dual format player if there is no clear format winner in about 2 years.

The article says "US Only", not North America. Got my hopes up for a second, Canadians want some HD-DVD lovin' too, MS.

Yeah! What the hell, the HD-DVD player is already $199 CDN up here (which is weird since it's $199 USD in the States), plus the 5 free movies is for US only... Give me a reason to buy MS! I was ready to buy until I read that.

I've got the HD-DVD add-on and its lots of fun. Well worth the $200 spent. With 5 free movies + King Kong + Media Remote all for $180, you can't go wrong. In fact, the player is practically free at that price. You really can't go wrong. HD is here, jump in.

just remember,
you have a lower drinking age,
and most european countries get to enjoy nudity in their street ads.

i think it's a perfectly fair trade off.

Anyone who has decent taste will get:

Apollo 13
Casablanca
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Blazing Saddles
The Perfect Storm

At least 3 of those movies are pretty good...

I can't wait to watch Blazing Saddles in HD. Who doesn't want to hear the word ni*** said in dolby digital surround sound? Watching Blazing Saddles for and HD experience is like watching Blade for a porno experience. It just doesn't make sense.

I concur...but I was referring more to the quality of the movies in general, as opposed to viewing them in HD.

That goes doubly so for Casablanca and triply so for South Park in HD, though.

You know, to each his own and all that, but the novelty of collecting DVD's and impressing people with my huge said collection wore off with me around, say, 2002. HD DVD and Blu Ray will not change that I am afraid.

It doesn't matter which format wins. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray can be ripped. If your format loses, you can just back up your movies and then copy them back to the winning format.

The fact it works on PC/360 and it's low price mean NOTHING if the format fails. Nobody seems to really look at the long term her. If $180 is all you're looking at then how sweet is that deal going to seem in hindsight when HD-DVD fails in the future? "My format may not be supported anymore, but that sure was an awesome $180 deal a few years ago..."

Give up HD-DVD. You're too hard to say, you don't have as much studio support, and you've failed to infiltrate any other types of electronics. Even my girlfriend who knows nothing about formats and the "war" currently going on said she thought it was "pathetic" that they have to have those HD-DVD player commercials on tv. You know, the one with the guy that talks about what a film buff he is and how his Toshiba HD-DVD player fits all his needs etc.

Talk about ungrateful...

A price drop is a price drop.

Does MS even have a vested interest in who wins the format war? I didn't think so but I may be wrong.

Either way I think MS should fully support HD-DVD and if they did it would definitely be a strong boost to HD-DVD as a whole.

Ignore the first line. I don't think its ungrateful. Just a lil needy. I don't understand how people can still complain when the price is being lowered...

I actually have a HDDVD player already. I'm just saying if they think this is going to help them with their war on Blu-Ray they are wrong.

I just realized why the Sony fans are in here trolling this post. They're pissed they have to recalculate all their PS3 vs 360 price comparisons.

Funny... the price drop announcement says "North America" (the HD-DVD's $199CAD as well), but the Movie offer says "US only".

Dammit, and I really wanted Dukes of Hazzard!

it'd be nice if the format war could just end so the transition of american televisions and broadcasting to a higher definition than 480p could be less painful.

blu-ray is 2 times the size... so honestly... why would hd-dvd be the successor?

just please god end.

Because size doesn't matter. :)

Seriously, though; Betamax was better than VHS and VHS still won out. What is technically better doesn't determine what format will win.

The only reason I bought an HD-DVD player is Universal's support. Most of my favorite movies are from Universal.

Namely Jaws.

question people! help? I live in the boonies. So hi-speed and XBL are a no-go for me until I move in a couple of weeks. But I do have a Phillips 42in lcd 1080p set. Can I acheive 1080p over monster component cables? I remember reading something a while back saying you couldnt? Or was that fixed in a dash update? What to do? Thanks!

who cares about a hd-dvd drive. Just release more HD movies on Live. Assuming you already have Live, all you need for that is HDD space.
