EA CEO John Riccitiello stated during a shareholder call, the same one where he said Godfather 2 was in production, that EA needs to make sure that 2K's All-Pro Football 2K8 is "not repeatable." Riccitiello specifically pointed out 2K Sports' re-emerged football franchise which has been missing since EA purchased exclusive rights to the NFL and current players in 2005.
Riccitiello specifically says that Take-Two is a "competitor" and when they launch a football game "you want to make sure that [it] ends up being a blip and is not repeatable, because we like to defend our franchises aggressively." We're sure EA can dig deep into their coffers to stop 2K if they wanted to, especially considering they could afford to make Peter Moore the head of EA Sports. The only issue we have is: Wouldn't it be nice if EA actually focused on improving Madden and defeating 2K on the field of consumer satisfaction?

This is exactly why I hate this company.
I refuse to purchase EA games. No matter how good they may look.
They are everything that is wrong with the gaming industry.
I bought All Pro Football, and I'm enjoying it very much. I will buy next years version too, as long as 2K keeps making it better, not just adding players/roster adjustments.

This being the same dude who said that publishers turning out sequel after sequel is what has made video games "boring" to him.
Has he never played an EA game?

Fuck EA I'm not buying there shit anymore. Monopolies are bad for everyone. If you have no competition and no motivation to change and add to the game consumers will wise up and stick with their old versions. 2K sports as far as I'm concerned is the best sports developer out there. I don't like sports at all but I like to play there games. Support the underdogs. Don't let EA kill more franchises. Sorry for the rant but I have wasted a lot of money on Ea shit over the years.

I guess I'd care a bit more if All-Pro Football 2K8 had actually turned into a fun game, but the graphic glitches are horrible, and the gameplay is clunky at best. I'm not a Madden fan by any means, but this game was no competition at all for that franchise. Although, I will say I have surprisingly been enjoying NCAA 08.

I have a feeling that most of you who are bitching about Madden "sucking" or being "half-assed" aren't actually Madden fans to begin with and, as such, have no reason to be discussing it.
There have been other NFL franchises that competed with Madden in the past (SURPRISE!) and Madden always tended to win out. The reason being that it's a really good, really solid football game. Even if I absolutely loathed EA, I would still buy Madden.
Should it be cheaper? Probably. Does it suck? No. Is it half-assed? Nope.
Honestly. You people sound like the PS3 fanboys who bitch about defective 360s.

does madden suck? no, not really, definitely solid, but by now, solid isn't good enough. competition is necessary, if madden never had competitors, it may never have gotten rid of the passing windows, or gone 3-d, lol...ok im overstating, but you wait and see, now that 2k may actually sell a few copies, next year's madden will actually move past being "solid"....

I was a Madden fan for YEARS...then Madden '98 came out. And it sucked, really really bad. In fact, NFL Gameday '98 pissed all over it. EA went back to the drawing board, and Madden 2000 wasn't bad at all. But then came 2K/Sega, and Madden got pissed on yet again.
It's about gameplay, and Madden games have mediocre gameplay. The AI, while it has improved, still isn't up to NFL 2k5, and it's been 2 games since that. The running game has always left something to be desired in Madden as well.
The bottom line is that EA kinda took it's ball and went home like a little kid, and then when they discovered that someone else had a ball, they pout about it. Madden is amongst the top-selling games in every given year, but it never seems to improve as much as any other series of titles out there. That is pathetic, and unacceptable for what they charge for games. They were guilty of it for about 6 full years with the NHL series too, until the '07 360 version.
So writing off everyone as fanboys is short-sighted, ill-informed, and pretty much useless. Exactly the same as blindly giving EA money every year for what is mostly a roster update with a new photo on the front of the package...

The sad thing is, as good as All Pro is, it could have been so much better without very much additional effort. I mean, the announcers repeat lines from 2k5! Why not go the old Earl Weaver Baseball route and pick a great season for each star, and have different eras battle each other? A few teams comprised of the best - or even good - players from each decade or something...
Damn, I had to mention Earl Weaver Baseball, my favorite game of all time, and made by, GASP, EA! Resurrect that, EA! Please!

improve madden? why? everyone knows the madden sheep will keep blindly buying the game regardless if its the same every year. we all saw this coming as soon as ea bought their way out of competition. 2k5 was better, and their afraid, or certain, that this new series will be better than madden, and they think its easier to write a check, than to work on their game
Posted: Jul 27th 2007 8:52PM (Unverified) said
How can you call fans of Madden "Madden sheep"? Wouldn't that imply that we just buy the game whenever it comes out, regardless of flaws in the gameplay or actual value to paying 50 bucks for the newest edition?
Maybe we LIKE the game, and like the changes and updates that come with every each new year's version. What's the point of bashing us for that? That's really just plain ignorant.

yep, thats exactly what i'm saying. most of you buy the game before you read a review, often times reserving it right after the super bowl. they re-release madden 94 and most maddensheep wouldn't notice

lol, you could almost hear the homer simpson scream, "aaaaah!" when ea saw 2k8. its actually kinda flawed, but its equaling the scores madden is getting in its first try...ea is mostly pissed that they may actually have to do better than, " hey we let you buy a super bowl ring this year!"

I'm not a fan of sports games period, but I watched a dev interview and what 2K is doing with All-Pro Football looks really good.

What the hell is EA thinking. They do not own the game of football, just the rights to the NFL licensing. I hate a company that is so afraid of competition that they buy their way out of it. They have no business trying to shut down other game studios from making a football game. We are responsible for EA having this monopoly. Realistically how much changes from game to game with any EA sports game? They add a feature and change some of the animations and charge another $60 for it. People need to quit buying this crap that they shovel out. Expansion packs have more content and creativity in them. Madden on next-gen is the perfect example of this. It is the third game for the next-gen era and there are still no nets behind the field posts. Why stop there? Why not cut out the markers on the sidelines if it makes their jobs easier. The "Maddenites" will buy it anyway because they are programmed into doing so.

Uh Oh 2K. You better watch out. I hear EA lawyers are looking into how they can somehow by the exclusive gaming rights to any activity that is played with a ball.

2K could take a page from Konami, i.e. Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution Soccer. Make a better game with out the licenses, that still have the editability to make the game complete, Pittsburgh Steelmen, Cincinnati Tigers, KC Indians. Nvm NFL fans are too lazy to edit a game and EA makes enough money for then to be lazy also.

Everybody should hold off on buying Madden for a year or less. Then buy last year copy after its been dramatically discounted. Of course EA would destroy any unsold copy rather than discount if such a scenario was to arrive.

I have the perfect idea for EA.
Get the exclusive license to the word Football! There you have it! Now nobody could compete. Well I guess they could call it something else, like Pigskin or something. Well they could get exclusive rights to all those names and that will do it. =)
I think the FTC should get involved. It should be illegal to get exclusive licenses for the NFL. I realize they are a corporate entity and have the right to their property, but it limits competition.

Though I love the competition driving EA to be better, I was never a fan of the 2K gameplay back to the 2k5. There were interesting elements, but just never did it for me.
And judging from the screenshots I've seen, the graphics are absolutely terrible.

Greg Thomas will eat Peter Moore for lunch. Greg Thomas has always been a no-BS type of guy who has put out superior games with no compromises. Peter Moore couldn't leash Greg Thomas when they were both at Sega he definitely will not be able to when they are on opposite sides.

EA wants to monopolize the football genre becuase they are afraid of competition. That's all this is people.

I am a big fan of the 2K series since it first came on the dreamcast. 2K5 was perfection, other than I couldn't do the whole get ready for the season parts like film and all, but my brother in law and I still battle it on the PS2 he has.
MS needs to make NFL2K5 compatible with the 360. Then, I wouldn't need an Madden stuff for the teams.
I want to play as my Team the Eagles, but madden just feels so bad its hard to even do.
I have a chance to get either game here as a gift, but I can't feel right paying too much for 2K8 after the demo (no line shifts, what the hell?!) and Madden if its anything like NCAA just looks pretty.
