Jaffe and Incognito chief leave Sony to start 'Eat, Sleep, Play' - announce Twisted Metal PS2 port
As promised, game developer David Jaffe has finally announced – in a move many expected – details of his new development studio located, not surprisingly, in Utah. Titled Eat, Sleep, Play, the new studio is a partnership with Incognito chief Scott Campbell who worked with Jaffe on the popular Twisted Metal series while both were at SCEA. With Ingognito's Warhawk about to take flight on PS3 and Jaffe having just finished Calling All Cars, the two are finally ready to branch out on their own ... but it's hard to get away from the mothership Sony. They've "signed on for a multi-year, multi-title deal to create titles for the PlayStation family of products, with the first slated for release in 2008."It's not clear if that includes their first project, a PlayStation 2 port of the PSP's Twisted Metal: Head On with some notable tweaks: bumped to 60 frames per second, higher-res textures, "5-7 levels from the never released Twisted Metal Black: Part II," and "a documentary on the history of the series." Jaffe surmises it may be some eight to twelve months before we hear about these new titles, but Twisted Metal: Head On will be available this holiday season.

Damn! If they were smart they would have a new twisted metal in production for the PS3.
Goddess of War @ Jul 27th 2007 12:07PM
God of War 3 on the 360. Flame!
mccomber @ Jul 27th 2007 12:13PM
Sony owns that IP in every sense.
mccomber @ Jul 27th 2007 12:11PM
So he left Sony to work with Sony?
Sounds like a good thing for Jaffe in the end, and hopefully they are able to make some great games. Somehow it seemed like he was getting tired of working for Sony, and I know from experience that sometimes working with a company is much better than working for them, especially from a creative standpoint.
I'll be interesting to see what happens when they've fulfilled their contract with Sony though...
StrangeBum @ Jul 27th 2007 12:24PM
He left Sony so that he is able to branch out. Now he is no longer constricted to making Sony only titles, any new IP that Jaffe and Campbell can come up with will probably see multi-platform releases.
But speaking of Twisted Metal, that's a franchise that I think they should bring back from the grave. After Twisted Metal 2 it just became stupid, maybe they can make a new one and go back to the roots.
mccomber @ Jul 27th 2007 12:36PM
I was being slightly sarcastic with my first sentence... as for new IPs, who knows what will happen. For now they are in a contract with Sony, so as far as we gamers are concerned, it's business as usual with Jaffe. Take that for what it's worth.

Jaffe has updated his personal blog with some more info:
"Again, we are working with Sony and that just feels great. We met with some other interested parties but at the end of the day, Sony is our home, our family, and we're really thrilled and honored they wanted to work with us and continue the relationship we've spent almost 15 years cultivating. So in many ways, it's like very little has changed, other than the pay cut."

I apologize for double posting, for some reason it didn't show the first time.

Its just like how Sakurai left Nintendo then came back to work on Brawl
Independent Dev teams are independent (duh), and probably enjoy lots of perks that a wholly owned subsidiary (like Incognito and HAL Labs) probably don't enjoy

Remember when Eat. Sleep. Play. was Super Nintendo's motto?
Konny @ Jul 27th 2007 12:31PM
lol .. same with "Play it Loud" .. when they were trying to appeal to teenage dudes and frat boys. My how things have changed.
BPM @ Jul 27th 2007 12:27PM
1) Yay, kitty picture.
2) Heh, PSP-to-PS2 port. When will it end? When will PSP keep its exclusives.... exclusive?
Noshino @ Jul 27th 2007 12:38PM
I enjoy the games in PSP, so yah, besides, its a PlayStation PORTABLE....

altho I can't deny that it looks ugly, I really want to see what this might turn out like... :]
Billiam247 @ Jul 27th 2007 12:40PM
Wait a minute... the PSP has games? When did this happen?
Christopher Grant @ Jul 27th 2007 12:41PM
That's actually their corporate logo.
... fine, i'm lying. But it should be! :P
GRANTED @ Jul 27th 2007 12:42PM
I hope his next game is like a pirate game for the ps3. where you've got 'a smaller vessel, scrappy even, manned with a crew of experienced sailors who felt the need to venture out into the unknown seas and and see what we could see. And the cool thing is, a small as our ship is, it’s not the least bit scary. It’s exciting as hell.'
at least he will be developing on the PS3. if his games do go multiplatform the 360 will be the port. but... both versions will probably run at 60fps. this isn't EA after all. and if he can do it with a ps2 he can do it with next gen... i didnt know ps2 could go 60fps. is that like, only when it runs at 480p? o well it doesnt matter i traded mine in anyway.
Angel of Death @ Jul 27th 2007 1:45PM
Hmm...anyone else find it interesting that the game he's currently "playing" (and featuring on his blog page) is an XBox 360 title?
I wonder if he had a PS3 title there last week? :)

Phranctoast @ Jul 27th 2007 2:27PM
If you listened to any of his podcast or basically any interview, he seems pretty non fanboyish to the other systems available.
LOKIOLR @ Jul 27th 2007 12:45PM
From what I remember Twisted Metal: Head On was just a port of Twisted Metal 2 with a few small additions. So this would be a port of a port. How about they just make a new game instead of porting over old ones. Perhaps a new PS3 Twisted Metal instead.
mccomber @ Jul 27th 2007 12:59PM
Actually, it was an original game that simply had the same feel as Twisted Metal 2. A good idea all around.
Phranctoast @ Jul 27th 2007 2:23PM
Some of the same levels as well. Paris was there for sure.
Word of the street. @ Jul 27th 2007 12:59PM
This is the only thing I need to say God of war for the PSP will be without any doubt ported to the Ps2,right?.
Well I never wanted to buy God of war anyway...
WiNG @ Jul 27th 2007 1:10PM
Twisted Metal 2 was the pinnacle of gaming.
Nothing can live up to that game.
They need to just do a remake with good graphics, but same gameplay and music, slightly better designed levels.
Just make it now. Make it online multiplayer with 12 players. DO IT SONY.
Derek Daniels @ Jul 27th 2007 1:26PM
What does this mean for Incognito? After Warhawk are they going to close their doors? Or is everyone going to ESP?
Jake @ Jul 27th 2007 1:15PM
He left Sony so that he can make more money if a game goes big and have more say and freedom to do what he wants. But, he is not yet will to, or financially able to, take the full risk of being on his own and possibly developing for other platforms.
On a side note. The Twisted Metal series is the most popular game series that I hate. I could never stand those damn games. My friends loved them. Ugh. Don't make any more. Please.
Phranctoast @ Jul 27th 2007 2:25PM
hopefully he'll make the game for the people that do love it, but maybe he'll just do it to spite you.
Martez @ Jul 27th 2007 1:16PM
You know, the PS2 isn't exactly the Sony system lacking games.
Gross Greg @ Jul 27th 2007 1:26PM
That studio name is all wrong! Jaffe's studio should be called:
Eat, Eat, Eat, Sleep, Eat, Eat, Play, Eat, Eat, Eat...
Harbl @ Jul 27th 2007 4:27PM
I can almost taste the "David Jaffe will make you his bitch," ads. Group of stellar game developers heading out to work on a game together in a brand new studio...
How long till they start working on their Daikatana?
Shockgamer @ Jul 27th 2007 4:53PM
So....pretty much nothing changes on the gamer end.
