Can you say Sega Nomad? Yeah you could play sega genesis games on that portable knightmare and plug the console controllers in it and it only ate like 8 AA's every 2 hours... sounds kinda familiar now. I remember one family get together and I had my Nomad plugged into the wall with an extra controller playing two player Road Rash or Sonic with a cousin. Terrible memories.

I typing right now on a laptop with an external multimedia keyboard and wireless mouse.

I don't see your point. It's much easier than using the cramped keyboard and touchpad.

I think it would actually be more like using an external keyboard attachment for something like a cellphone, not a laptop.

But IMO, this seems like a pretty cool idea, it would definitely bring life back to my PSP, seeing as my control nub is broken and acts up all the time.

I may end up trading in my old PSP for one of the newer PSPlites, I don't know yet.

i think this would probably be more for playing ps1 games on your psp maybe, rather than for actual psp games?

The only way it could be considered a portable ps2, is if it actually played ps2 games... (out of the box)

Looks like sony is considering the nintendo route, have us rebuy all the games we already owned, just so we can play them on the go.

Of course this is all pure speculation.

The Nomad (and CDX) actually let you play the original genesis games that you already purchased.
You didn't have to repurchase games you already owned.

Granted this is just an early diagram of possibilities with SixAxis & "the portable processing unit"(LoL the new nickname for the PSP? XD)... but it definitely interests me in getting the PSP-slim just for this purpose.

More likely would be the ability to control the PSP with a sixaxis for playing PSP games on tv with the new tv out option.

The ps2 slim is small enough as it is, and is pratically portable in itself.
It really doesn't make much sense to bring your psp, plus games, batteries, and controllers, and hook them up to a television.

If it really is a way to play psp games with dualshock, how would you hold the psp and dualshock at the same time? It would have to be hardwired.

It will be interesting to see where sony goes with this.

seems like we would of heard about it by now if they were going to do anything.

i dont understand what peoples problem with the PSP controls are anyway, they feel great to me. I'm betting this was an idea they were throwing around for PS1 emulation on PSP until they came up with their alternate control scheme. Not to say this wont happen, but it seems unlikely IMO.

"Those of you disappointed by the PSP Lite's omission of a second analog nub may want to settle down into a comfy chair and peruse patent #0070174531 which envisions a "control docking unit" that could be "configured to accept a portable processing unit and provide alternate control operation of the portable processing unit." It's a stretch, but we think "portable processing unit" is patentspeak for "PlayStation Portable.""

Those who thought that the PSP Lite would benefit from an extra analogue stick are fucking stupid. Why? Because of the simple fact that previous PSP videogames wouldn't use the second analogue stick because they were not coded to use a second analogue stick because it obviously wasn't there. How fucking stupid can some people get?

They should've included a 2nd analog stick on the new PSP,therefore I wouldnt see the need for a controller attachment. Near the buttons there's a space for it..

No the shouldn't have. Any games for the new system would be unplayable on the current one. The current "redesign" being the same, except for the extra ram but I don't think that will be too much of a problem, doesn't affect old owners.

Maybe at the 5 or 6 year mark I won't mind a second analogue stick, but not at 2.

I also don't see this being used with new PSP games, but for playing PSP games on the TV with a Playstation controller. Seems pretty cool.

That's the dumbest idea ever. That takes away all purpose of "PORTABLE" or "HANDHELD."

Jeesh...they get their savy engineers to slim the thing down, only to add on a frickin SIXAXIS for better control. Yea, I can see kids playing with THAT rediculous combo on the bus. Great idea fellas.

When I first heard details on the sixaxis, I was always wondering if they would allow you to use one with the PSP (via a usb connection). I would certainly play my PSP FAR more often if I could play games in comfort!

Why required? PS2slim's physical design is very portable, has a huge established library, and has the better controls. All you might need is an LCD/Batter peripheral. Not including the LCD, not only is the hardware cheaper but so is the software. :p

Mayhaps they can also patent some sort of system whereby the PSP connects to a PS3 to leverage the cell processing power and thus reduce load times.

Then you'd be playing with power! Portable power!

I thought of something really weird, when I saw this, imagining a psp docked to a ps3 controller... so that you have... a really bulky 'mini-window' of information (maps, rear-view mirrors (hee hee), um...)

Then I thought of ds, you know, the dual screen.

I was thinking, wow, what an awkward 'attack' on the ds system.

Sony's like, "What do we have in the coffers to offer Sony fanboys a "ds-like system"?

And they're like, "We have $2.32"

"That's enough. Mount a psp to a ps3 controller. It's two screens, like a DS, only the 2nd screen... is much bigger!"

And then, in practice...

"Dude... SWEET uh... controller-um-thingy you have there, can I play?"

(plays)

"Dude... I don't think this screen is 'touch sensitive'"

Someone mentioned including an hdd drive in psp.

Flash is here, and will come down in price quickly, especially with all the people owning iphones.

So the next psp will not need a hard drive, it will use a flash drive, in...

Could they really do it by Holiday 2008? I'm thinking no, because unless things really get exponential (which they decidedly could), we'll see a 2010 psp with flash drive, 600+mhz processor (remember, batteries will be better then, too), higher-res display, better graphics, etc. And of course, two analog 'touch-strips' to replace the analog nub. (research the work by Kurzweil on this, among others)

The question is begged, though: will the new psp have a touch screen and another screen above it? Will it have a single large screen that is a touch screen? Will it use the new foldable lcd tech?

The portable realm is interesting, because who are the players? Sony and Nintendo. There is no pressure or competition from Microsoft.

If there was, we can imagine this:

Microsoft makes a relatively cheap, high-powered system that gets hot in your hands and has a little brick before it connects to the car's lighter outlet. It comes with a tiny hard drive which sometimes scratches itself. First-time buyers find themselves weary of those three mysterious LED's which haven't all lit up at once, yet. It is easy to code for, and has a large amount of games, on release.

Nintendo makes a system that is the cheapest, with the lowest quality graphics, but it has the power of two DS's duct-taped together. It uses cartridges. It has a large amount of games featuring Mario.

Sony makes a robust unit that costs the most, but it has built-in "blue-flash" technology. It utilizes a 3-cel chip and has the most outrageous technology ever fit into a portable device (eat your heart out, iPhone).

It has 3 games.

I just call it like I see it.

You are all taking the image too literally.
I think this would be for a new system.

I came up with this idea a while ago, maybe I should have patented it:

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/jensen404/ds2.jpg?t=1185662285

Have a base unit that includes everything but the controls. You can add a portable control grip/dock, or a comfort control grip. Or use it as a media player without additional grips, or to play games that only need the touch screen.
