New scans from Japanese gaming magazine Jump show that the Nintendo DS will be receiving three Dragon Quest remakes -- IV, V and VI -- each as separate titles. The scans can be found on the NeoGAF forums; according to a translation from IGN, the first game (DQIV) is expected to be released in Japan this winter. The scans show that the games will be receiving a graphical upgrade from their original form. While these games are only going to further cement the DS's dominance in Japan, the RPG trio is not guaranteed for release in other regions; of the three, only DQIV has ever received an official launch elsewhere.
A word to Square Enix: you're running out of games to remake.

Soon SE won't have a damn thing to do except make more Final Fantasy games...and we'll see how long they keep churning those babies out.

FF3 DS = remake
Resident Evil Gamecube = remake
Metroid Zero Mission = remake
That would look so awesome with updated graphics.
Hell, make a Chrono Trigger 2

I'd be all over that like a Priest on a boy.

We never did get the PSX remake of DQIV. I'd be interested in a DS version since I love the game. V and VI were never officially translated at all.
I hope they make it over.

Square Enix is going a long time between new console releases of their flagship FinalFantasy series. They need the remakes to keep the money flowing in until FFX III is released.
Speaking of which, where is FF XIII? I'd speculate:
1. It's taking longer to develop than anticipated.
2. The cost is higher than anticipated.
3. They are waiting until the PS3 has a large enough install base to break even.
4. They are porting it to the PS2 and/or Wii.

Also, we have Oblivion, Fallout, Deus Ex, Ultima..
(note: most of these RPGs are action-based. While most Japanese RPGs you would mention are turn-based fare. Coincidence?) (For that matter, most Japanese RPGs are inspired by Ultima...)
And not to forget, we also have our own RPG system: AD&D.

um, let me see.....
Looking at my game shelf...
The entire "Elder Scrolls" series (Yes, there were games before Morrowind)
The entire Ultima series
The Wizardry series
The Bard's Tale series
The Might & Magic series
the Baldurs Gate Series
The Icewind Dale series
Planetscape: Torment
DungeonSeige
Diablo Series (debatable if you want to argue its not a RPG)
World of Warcraft
SSI alone made over a dozen great RPGs back in the 80's including the gold box series which is in CGW's Hall of Fame
I can probably name another dozen or so great western RPGs if I were to get up and look at my other bookcases but I think i've made my point.
Oh, and one big reason that western RPGs are BETTER than most eastern RPGs......
You can tell the males from the females.

how many times have they remade ff1&2? i was just laughing at joystiq's foolish business perspective of se. se will never stop remaking games.

Although in FF1 and FF2's case I would term them ports rather than remakes due to the reuse of assets (except PSP remakes).
S-E seriously needs to remake Chrono Trigger, or at least port it to DS/PSP.
Also, why are people considering Square Enix remakes a bad thing? I've never had the chance to play the original ones, and I'm loving the extra effort they give in to polish the game. I'm liking Final Fantasy III right now because I had never played an RPG as hardcore as that before (no resurrection in inns?!).
So I'm happy to get these remakes. Please stop fighting.

And when it's done, I'll just be using it for hentai, anyway.

As for this rerelease... I'm intrigued, but I'm not holding my breath. DQ has long been a series that I felt was overhyped by RPG partisans. There are only two entries into the series that I really enjoyed greatly - though to be fair, DQ4 was one of them. This might be interesting, though other import gamers have warned me off of DQ5.
Also, you can pretty much guarantee this will get translated. Part of the reason Enix went into the merger was to increase the distribution of the DQ series outside of Japan. If they didn't, it'd be like they were giving up on the impetus behind the merger, and I see no reason why they'd do that.
