Rumor: Overlord looking to rule over PS3 [update]
[Update: Codemasters says it's not happening.]
Triumph Studios, creators of Overlord, have a job posting where they're looking for a PlayStation 3 programmer who will be responsible for "porting X360/PC code base to PS3." Well, unless they're planning to port Age of Wonders five years later, we're going to guess they're looking at "porting" Overlord to PS3.
If you're a PS3 owner looking to play Overlord and just can't wait till they hire this person to do the porting, you can always just head on over to GameTap if you've got a gaming PC. A recent deal between Codemasters and GameTap means that anybody with a decent PC and internet connection will be able to play Overlord with a subscription for far less then the next-gen $59.99 price. Considering they haven't even hired the person to do the porting yet, who knows when it'll be done. Alternatively, it could be a completely new game Triumph is working on and looking to port the code for.
[Thanks Vlad]

If the rumor holds true, another exclusive bites the dust.
But you guys conveniently negate a third possibility. That they are working on a new game (likely) and they want to port the existing code they have to PC. Very likely, especially if they want a nearly simultaneous launch.
morganfell @ Jul 30th 2007 9:56PM
Very good observations. They haven't really had a game besides Overlord since 2003 so it is either Overlord ported or a new title. It may depend somewhat on the Overlord sales figures. If the game did poorly then they may be looking at a port in an attempt to recomp investment.
GearsMaster @ Jul 30th 2007 9:36PM
Let the Fanboy Wars BEGIN!
My analysis....could be true but either way it won't matter since it will be a LONG time before it appears on the ps3 (if true).
Hopefully its not true though.
embassy @ Jul 30th 2007 9:49PM
is this even a popular title?
the demo was ok and the concept is rather funny...
but we're not talking about splinter cell 5 or bioshock here people. this is overlord. i think fans will be ok if that slips to the ps3.
Sceren @ Jul 30th 2007 9:58PM
I loved Overlord. I would consider it one of the best titles in my library.
manguy @ Jul 30th 2007 10:24PM
we're all just going to assume u have next to nothing of a library
sheppy @ Jul 30th 2007 10:39PM
Or we could assume, as a Pikmin clone, it stands largely alone in the 360 library. As such, some could consider it among the best on the platform. Not exactly a crowded genre, is it?
But it's okay. Continue bashing peoples tastes in games while you're waiting for shooter XI or racer 42.

Don't bash racer 42. Its going to be the best in the series.
ComradeTrotskii @ Jul 30th 2007 10:46PM
Hopefully its not true though.
Yes, because heaven forbid that PS3 owners would get the opportunity to experience a really great game.
Seriously, why do you hope that it is not true? Are you genitals that insignificant?
GearsMaster @ Jul 30th 2007 11:19PM
I hope its true cuz I don't want the ps3 to have a title that I feel belongs to the 360...
Deal with it...
I'm allowed to think what I want to think.
Overlord is a great game full of great comedy and I would recommend it to anyone whos thinking of getting a 360.
If its on the ps3 that gets rid of one reason to own a 360.
SO yes I hope it never appears on the ps3. Just like ps3 owners hope that MGS4 doesn't appear on the 360. Justl ike ps3 owners hope that FFXIII doesn't appear on the 360.
Its not really rocket science here...

Heh, this is good news for everyone. It will mean more money for the company that created the game, and a chance for a new user-base to play what may or may not be a great game (it's up to the individual). Multi-platform benefits everyone, the publisher, developers, and consumers.
KingOfGods @ Jul 30th 2007 11:00PM
Loved the demo but didn't buy the game. I didn't understand why a great game like Shadowrun gets ripped apart for it's price but this game which is only $30 on PC is $60 dollars on 360 with no complaints.
sheppy @ Jul 30th 2007 11:09PM
Well, this game LAUNCHED for $40, $10 cheaper than Shadowrun. But regardless, by the time LOTR BFME2 dropped on 360, I snagged my copy on PC for $20. We could all go on and on. PC gaming has traditionally been cheaper than console gaming in the software side.
King @ Jul 31st 2007 7:57AM
Your talking about picking up an older game on for cheap, I'm talking about a game that was released on the same day for both platforms with a $20 difference.
It wouldn't be a problem if it was $40 or even $50 but it retails for $60 on 360 for the same game

People here no longer understand what types of games matter as exclusives.
Big budget titles that really take advantage of the hardware they are designed on can tend to be the best games of a generation. Those games can be designed to the strengths of a platform, rather than just to the weaknesses of multiple platforms. In addition, console manufacturers often will fund devs looking to make a big exclusive with the hope that the game will help push systems. That added assistance can really put a title over the top. Those are the types of exclusives that matter.
Overlord does not fall into that catergory. It was only left off of PS3 because the devs didn't have the resources and/or desire to build it for that particular system. The game can obviously easily be run on PS3. Perhaps now they have free resources and now want to port it over with the hopes of making some money.

Not surprising. Codemasters is working with Sony to develop and optimize their Neon engine.

Well, that would be cool for Ps3 owners. Funny how as I am reading this my Fiance has taken over my 360 because hers rrod'd, and she is playing Overlord. God that game is annoyingly loud.
maylon @ Jul 31st 2007 12:38AM
And I for one welcome more cool games for the Ps3, even if I don't own one.
Vidikron @ Jul 31st 2007 2:47AM
Hopefully they won't port over the bugs. I played the demo on the 360 and really enjoyed it... it's a rather humorous game. But before I went to buy the game I read some reviews and found out that the game contains several game-ending bugs. That killed it for me. Now I'll wait to see if they patch it and, if they do, maybe pick it up used or in some sort of bargain bin. Or I might look at the game again if/when it does make it over to the PS3.
morganfell @ Jul 31st 2007 7:40AM
Well it ia a new game. Codemasters says it isn't Overlord:
