With the race to complete photorealism continuing at full tilt, it's kind of nice to see a game like Castle Crashersthat still looks so ... gamey. We know it makes us sound like a cranky 80-year-old, but Behemoth's latest project seems to have been transported to us from a time when games were games.
Take a look at the above footage from the floor of Comic-Con and see if you don't agree that while you may swoon for the girls with the high-res faces, there will always be a place in your heart for a game that makes up for its lack of polygons with an abundance of panache.
This game reminds me of hours spent with TMNT on NES, except, I won't be in the same room as my brothers this time -- thank you online gaming for making it close to the real thing.
Looks pretty rad, but I would've liked to see something cool happen with that tower that they were trying to knock down to no avail. Adding a few more destructible items that you can use for offense would be grand.
That said, this looks awesome, though I would love to see them finish off Samurai Asshole from back in the day. Last I remembered there was up to the smurf level which was MADNESS.
maybe I'm dating myself... but hell, I remember way back when Newgrounds was only pico, robocats, and the club-a-seal foundation. *sniff* the salad days
Lol, i love the fight to the death sequence for the girl at the end, just funny how they defeated the boss together, then they turn around and kill each other.
"but Behemoth's latest project seems to have been transported to us from a time when games were games."
Amen to that. One of the biggest things that pushed me back more towards the Wii side this generation is the lust-like obsession with realism on the other systems (and yes, I'm well aware of the complete irony in that statement considering Castle Crashers is a 360 game ;) ). If I wanted realism, I'd walk out my front door, not turn on a videogame.
The problem with realism is that it is just one style. I want a bunch of different styles.
Which is why I was excited Viva Pinata is coming to the DS, as it was the only 360 game I felt had good style (then they announced it will all be prerendered garbage, unfortunately).
Nothing is wrong with trying to achieve realism, that is what makes games that deal with situations in real life so immersive and in depth. That could include war, drug dealing, personal choices, sports and whatever.
Man I wanted red to get the girl. but he was pwned. i love that they kick each others asses to get the girl at the end. who needs photorealism when you have social realism.
I love the way this game looks. I always thought that this is how 2D gaming SHOULD look if it hadn't been all but abandoned by developers.
The only concern I have is that it won't be as fun with online co-op. Half the fun of these kind of games back in the day was getting together with people at an arcade and forming a sort of camaraderie with them...whether you knew them or not. It seems like that would be the first thing to be potentially lost when porting this kind of game to online play.
...I have that same concern for Smash Bros, too...
Nice looking game. Its up there with Odin Sphere, IMO. 2-d is never going to die, period.
Of course, all the younger gamers who's first console was either a PS2/Xbox won't like this game. Its all about 3-d visual for them. But they should give this game a try when its released.
That video was made of pure jolly good win! I regret not buying Alien Hominid when it came out. =/ I'd kill to have this game ported to the DS though, even if it would kill screen quality.
Why? I miss great 2D co-op games of the old, thus my hype for Contra 4.
A couple of things which detracted were the potentially repetitive bad guys (even Double D had a palette of a few different ones), and due to the fact that they've gone for a very flat 2D style even though you have a "shadow", it seemed difficult to see exactly which vertical plane you are on especially during that boss sequence.
I saw the minifigs for this game on eBay... they are absolutely adorable. It looks like they come with a green fish weapon. I wonder if that has anything to do with gameplay? Can't wait for the game!

Maybe CC will get over to Wii at some point.
It can also be detrimental if not used correctly, as much of reality really isn't very interesting and doesn't work well in a game setting.

All 3 of the next gen consoles support at least 4 controllers.

Finally, a game on the Wii that has the exact same graphics as a game on Xbox 360/PS3!!!
...or will it be down loadable content only?
