GameDaily: Nintendo's George Harrison announces retirement
Hot on the heels that the Big N is looking for someone to fill a top marketing position, GameDaily BIZ is reporting that George Harrison, a senior Nintendo VP, will be retiring from the company, though he will help transition the sales and marketing team from Redmond to New York.
According to "an industry source at a major publisher," Harrison, the Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications for Nintendo, distributed a voice message at the company revealing his "early retirement." At this point, GameDaily is unsure if that means a retirement just from the House of Mario, or from games all together. Some of you may remember that Harrison's departure (along with Kaplan's and Beth Llewelyn's) was rumored by Game Informer in June. We wish the departing Harrison all the best.

Kojima? What did he do?
BPM @ Jul 31st 2007 11:43PM
Policenauts, Snatcher, Zone of the Enders, Boktai/Lunar Knights, and a little something called... Metal Gear. Maybe you've heard of the last one?
Purple Haze @ Aug 1st 2007 5:49AM
No BPM I'm not stupid I know that but I mean in terms of moving. All hes done is say hes not doing metal gear anymore which is he said ages ago anyway. Moore is going from Microsoft to EA, David Jaffe is staring that eat sleep play thing and George Harrison is retiring, so I'm asking what Kojima is doing in those terms, not what bloody games he made.

Oh thanks guys you made me lose my train of thought!

Did they edit the article, or are the first two posts just making fun? It now says "wish"...
Anyway, I suppose he made enough money at Nintendo that he COULD retire early, if he wanted to. But maybe that's just my cynical opinion of corporate VPs in general, that they get most of their company's profits when the company does insanely well...
Paviel @ Jul 31st 2007 11:11PM
How much does Nintendo pay its senior VPs in light of its recent success with the Wii? Somehow I get the feeling that senior VPs of successful companies get a big enough paycheck to retire early on...
Anyway, it does make way for new blood, which does seem to be Nintendo's battle cry of late...

I didn't know they were moving to New York! I wonder if it will affect my cousin's job there. I'm not sure what he does there, I just know he is pretty high up. And yes, his son was playing Starwars Galaxies when he was 3... LOL
I remeber he (his son) had all these GBA games that had stickers on them "Not for resale" or something like that. He had like a millon of them!

Farewell Mr. Harrison. You will always be defined by that pimp music that played while you took the stage at E3 2006 (for everyone else, think Duffman's Theme from the Simpsons) and your contributions to past Nintendo public events. Well done.
colin @ Jul 31st 2007 11:37PM
wasn't he a beatle?
Raikage @ Jul 31st 2007 11:49PM
LOL, yes George Harrison was part of the Beatles. Not this George Harrison though...
BTW Sir Paul McCartney's new album "Memory Almost Full" is absolutely amazing, I recomend that any fan of the Beatles or Sir Paul McCartney pick the album up!
Monkeydog @ Aug 1st 2007 12:04AM
Of course he was.
That's why Nintendo is like pretty much the equivalent to games as the Beatles were to music.
Without him, how will Nintendo ever be so awesome again?
NintendoFanbot @ Aug 1st 2007 12:13AM
It's why EarthBound is so full of Beatles references.
hydralisk456 @ Jul 31st 2007 11:44PM
I always thought that Harrison stayed pretty professional when dealing with the public, he knew what he was talking about and he didn't bad-mouth his competitors. See ya George, we'll miss ya!

huh... I guess with a 'new gen' of gaming consoles must come a new gen of execs...

"We wish the departing Harrison all the best."
Not me. The man was an albatross. He was making ridiculous statements about an underwhelming console way before Kutaragi. His most memorable moment is still the time he dismissed Final Fantasy 7 as a slow and tedious game that nobody would want to play, while preaching the virtues of the N64's cartridge format.
How'd that work out for you, George?
Cuja @ Aug 1st 2007 12:39PM
Bail out while the going's good.
