An African women's blog has taken offense to the new Resident Evil 5 trailer depicting a "white man in what appears to be Africa killing Black people." The blog post goes on to say that the black people "are supposed to be zombies" and that it's "the white man's job" to destroy them and save humanity. There are some other issues the writer has, but she ties it all up by saying "this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young ... fearing, hating, and destroying Black people."
OK, where to begin? As for the "marketed to children" thing, it's going to be an M rated game, kids shouldn't be playing it. It is rather interesting to note that more than a few people, including The Village Voice, have noticed the setting of the new RE5 and found it a little jarring. Although that could simply be because the average video game may only have one random black character (typically a hero or anti-hero), so more than two on the screen at any one time is revolutionary. The African issue aside, the Japanese developed Resident Evil series has been killing white people for its entire run so far -- how did white people not catch on to this and get upset? Because it's not white killing, it's zombie killing. You're killing them because they want to eat or infect you, not because of their skin color. But now we have black zombie-like people getting killed in RE5 and gay aliens in Halo 3 ... what is this industry coming to? The sins of diversity.

[Yes this site is a threat, hmm strange nobody speaks about GTA though, how it was all peaches and cream with the public to rape, pillage, and destroy a city till the hero became black.....we dare not make that correlations]
Actually, I don't think that's accurate. GTA was catching flak with the media long before San Andreas.
[Now back to the racism of the game itself, RE4 they didn't look Spanish, they didn't dress Spanish you wouldn't have guessed what they were from just a screen shot. That right there is the point probably put forth, why the need for clarity of race now. Seems the series was perfectly happy with its homogeneous violent streak up until now why the need to change it. Nobody wants to say why, nobody wants to take a guess on how it seemed ok to do that? The answer is easy, black people are portrayed horribly in video games, and media so adding more clarifying traits is ok because who is it going to hurt. Past RE they would be almost naked, or mutated the town destroyed, look at the nice fruit stands and such, seems these zombies care about their neighborhood, not like some zombies!]
Can't say I agree with this either. Have you actually seen Spanish people living in Spain? What does it mean to "dress Spanish"? Are you actually familiar with the fasions or people living in rural Spain? Either way, they were Spanish in RE4 and they did look human at the start of the game. The people at the start of RE4 weren't nearly naked and were living in a decent looking village. I really don't see how the apparent start of RE5 is any different than the start of RE4 other than the setting is now Africa where [surprise!] most of the people are black.

Stop and think for a second...Maybe they don't look 'Zombie-Like' beacuse they were just turned into zombies, not bitten/mutilated by other zombies.
I think Capcom was going for a more realistic zombie look, its just too bad they chose brown skinned people to do it with and it brought all of you loonies out of the basement to rage about it.

Racism can be said to come from things like fear, ignorance, and misunderstanding, which in turn can come to a boil as hate.
I can't help but read this woman's comments and not see that she's using the very same emotions to criticize RE5. I watched the RE5 trailer and was instantly excited, not because I get to shoot "black" zombies, but because it gave me that same isolated, claustrophobic sense that RE4 gave me. Damned if I even gave two cares about what continent it was set on, I get to shoot Z O M B I E S.
To say that this game is "marketed to kids", and that somehow we like to start our racism while they're young, shows her ignorance on this subject. If someone is honestly going to play a game like RE5 and suddenly come to the realization that it's somehow okay to shoot people, let alone black people, I don't think that person really needed RE5 in the first place. They've already stepped down the dark path a long time ago.
There's also no telling how the story of RE5 plays out either. It could follow the storyline of something similar to "The Constant Gardener" where evil "white" corporate England is testing a zombie virus on the poor "black" of Africa. Who knows, but by all means continue putting carts in front of your horse.

I too am Black... I've been playing RE since the 1st one.. Yeah, the majority of zombies in the RE series was White. But there's one difference, They "LOOKED" like zombies! This game has them looking normal.. Wheres the blood, missing limbs, eyes, and the famous zombie movement?? Is it Racist? No, but I can see where someone who really doesn't play games would call it Racist. Just prepare for the Boycott and/or Ban of this game in the US!

You realize this trailer probably takes scenes from very early in the game.
The spaniards of RE4 didn't start looking like freakish zombies until for than 2 hours into the game. Otherwise they looked completely human, if not a little backwoods. This is the same case here. Its a remote town, full of poor people, and there's a zombie/parasite outbreak that turns all the locals nasty. Who knows how it progresses from there, we saw a 2 minute trailer.
The game looks phenominal. I'm only sad that it probably won't hit the Wii, since its gameplay mechanic looks identical to RE4.

No surprises. I think everyone was a little jarred seeing the white man shoot the hordes of black folk.
But Africa is a novel setting. And it happens to be almost entirely black. So it happens.
More jarring, to me, was that the zombified africans look right out of Song of the South, or Tintin in the Congo. They look very minstrelesque. Frighteningly so. But not enough for me to think it is intentional.

Some of you guys should open up a little and really understand what the woman is trying to convey. Its inevitable that some people may have a little too much fun playing this game. While I don't think this was Mikami's intent at all, its still a valid concern. Some of you would do well to not be so immediately dismissive of suck sensitive issues.
All they need to do is throw us a few black protagonists (a la Luis Sera from RE:4) and everything will be fine.

Well it looks like unfortunately Jack Thompson has been talking to this woman. I really think this shows how little this woman understands about gaming and gamers. If you really think that a gamer is going to pick up a gun, get a ride to Africa, and start slaughtering zombie black people (who to my understanding are fictional) then you drastically underestimate our intelligence. Come on lady we live in a time where white people don't go in and mow down african villages only africans do that now.

She mentioned in her blog that she is not a gamer and I can understand how she might feel looking at this trailer. I would rather wait until the game has been released before making quick judgements about it because the plot hasn't even been finalized. Capcom still has the right to freedom of speech and expression.
And for a few commenters, I do not think it is fair to the Japanese to make judgements on how racially sensitive they are to different issues. Individuals have opinions, we should not assume an entire group of people share them.

I think part of the problem was that Capcom didn't offer any context for this trailer. You can't blame people for judging it based on the trailer alone if that's all Capcom has decided to show. The game is still a year off, and I doubt they'll run into any serious opposition until it's closer to release, and we have more information. Hopefully they'll use that time wisely.

You don't have to play video games to analyze the imagery and symbolism in the trailer. It's so loaded with it, it's going to pop.
Also, if you had this woman play on Xbox live for a day, do you think she would be any happier? I'm waiting to see what happens when the racist cesspool that is XBL is discovered by the mass media.

You said people who don't play games shouldn't talk about games. I'm just pointing out where that argument might backfire. If you're talking about specific games, then none of us have played RE5, yet we still feel fine talking about it.
"2) There is only symbolism in the trailer if you're looking for it."
I disagree, symbolism in film is pretty well defined, and this trailer was loaded with it.
"3) You're just trying to fuel the fire."
No, I'm just expressing my opinion. If there's a fire, I've got nothing to do with it.

@John
But I think the point Sceren is trying get across is that she doesn't know the context. We, as gamers, know the history of the series. We may not know the details of this sotry line, but we know that problems are caused by the "evil" Umbrella Corporation. We know that most of the games have featured white zombies. We know that Chris has been white from the start. The only reason that the zombies are black in this game is because the location is Africa.
Knowing all that I don't see how anyone can jump to the conclusion that RE5 contains racist themes. Should Chris magically become black so that it's not a white person shooting the black zombies? That's just silly. I don't recall any outcry when people were killing Spanish people in RE4.
I might not go as far as to say that someone who doesn't play games shouldn't comment on them at all, but they should, at the very least, do a little background checking before leveling something as serious as charges of racism.

"The African issue aside, the Japanese developed Resident Evil series has been killing white people for its entire run so far -- how did white people not catch on to this and get upset? Because it's not white killing, it's zombie killing."
Well, no... that's kind of not the whole reason. I agree that this is a really ridiculous controversy, but white people didn't get upset because white people, as a whole, don't have a history of being oppressed by another set of people, whether black, brown, purple, zombie or whatever. There are other games where you're required to kill people of all colors that aren't zombies and people weren't upset, obviously.
What IS ridiculous about this is the fact that the author essentially implies that, I guess, games shouldn't feature a lot of villainous black people. Forget about whatever setting you want to put your game in and actually, we should probably start implementing a "separate but equal" clause for all games. White people should only be able to kill white people, and black people should only be able to kill black people, and so on. Oh wait, that'd just reinforce the negative and inaccurate stereotypes that all black people do is kill each other. So rather, black people can just never be a villain in a game, because otherwise that'd just reinforce another inaccurate negative stereotype. That is basically the conclusion I gather from this.

I do not know how Capcom will handle this, but seein how ppl are comparin RE 5 with Leprechaun in the hood movie to find what is overlooked, I think I should mention "The Last Samurai." I mean replace African villagers to Japanese villagers in Japan, rather than in Africa and you get the same thing. Although, we don't know much about RE5, but if it is like the Last Samurai where a white guy saves a foreign country, then yeah....
With that said, I don't think that it is Japan being the only xenophobic place, but also stuff ppl in Hollywood. Unforunately, racism exist everywhere and not in only place.

Here's my thoughts: (for full disclosure, I'm black)
I think there's nothing wrong with expressing concern on this. That doesn't mean the game should be cancelled by any means, but given the racial climate in this country, the author is reasonable in expressing her feelings.
I foresaw this sort of thing before, a video game where the primary enemy is of a specific race/ethnicity (the same thing could've happened with Hispanics or Arabs). I'm kind of torn in that it's perfectly reasonable to place a RE game in Africa as it opens up a wealth of new scenarios, challenges, and can be visually interesting. But every single time I shot someone in the game I'd still have those racial implications she mentioned in the back of my head.
It doesn't help either that RE has never had a black protagonist, even as a secondary playable character. Given that the series has a long tradition of at least two playable characters per game, there should have been one by now. Off the top of my head, the only black character in the whole series I can even remember is the one guy at the police station in RE2. (I never played RE3 or the gun game spinoffs)
So ultimately I dunno. The game's scenario probably justifies things, but would the Japanese developers have done a game where the zombies/whatever are in a village in Okinawa (and give us a Hanzo sword )?
For the matter do you think ANY Japanese developer would consider making a game where a lone white man is forced to take down a bunch of Japanese people?

OK, but who's creating the situation where black people are evil and you have to kill them? This isn't the real world, it's one where the game developers have complete control over what happens.

The "hey, they've been killing white people the last 4 games" argument is pretty stupid, as "white people" don't have a motherland (unless you count Boston) or an ugly history as the victims of violent oppression and slavery.
Saying "all they did was change countries" may be true, but it's extremely simplistic. There is a context to all of this that only computer gaming coders would be ignorant of. Or maybe they thought they were being "progressive" by making zombification an multicultural affair.
Well, they can't scrap the game now - so they'll covertly get as much free press from the ensuing controversy as possible. But clearly, making four sequels (and three crappy movies) to the same silly game has turned the Resident Evil creators into unthinking zombies.
