Fire Emblem's Ike playable in Smash Bros. Brawl
The official blog for Super Smash Bros. Brawl has pulled the wraps off of the newest playable character in the game: Ike from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. His special move is called "Aether," which he uses to finish his enemies off with a single sword blow. Let's just pray that none of his opponents come equipped with a lance.
In other SSBB news, Animal Crossing's "Pitfall" will be one of the items, and Donkey Kong's "Final Smash" attack involves whipping out a set of bongos and "jamming." As a side effect of jamming though, DK starts annoying people at open mics and sells all his used CDs so he can follow Phish around, which is a level of realism we're just not ready for.

hopefully he's better than that Marth guy
Fatass of Kickassness @ Aug 1st 2007 8:53AM
That'll be a bit tough considering Marth was the best character in Melee due to his sword's long reach and that reflect attack of his.
Grey Acumen @ Aug 1st 2007 11:40AM
It's called counter attack, but yes, Marth is the perfect figher in Smash Bros.
For a second, I was going "Wooo!!! Marth got a badass update!" Then I read a bit further and realized that it wasn't Marth, and that made me a little sad.
On one side, this raises that likelyhood of Marth being in on the idea that everybody in Smash Bros 64 had gotten to Melee, then they might do the same for everyone from Melee to Brawl. So with this guy being from fire emblem, we know at least Fire Emblem is being included, so Marth has a chance too.
One the other side though, this guy already looks like Marth and Roy just sorta merged into one guy, so maybe they're trying to get a replacement for both Marth an Roy at the same time. Pit was already looked at as being a possible replacement for Roy due to the similar appearance.
I do kinda get teh feeling that Marth isn't going to be showing up. Either way, as long as this guy is fast enough to keep up, maybe he'll become my new favorite. He certainly looks awesome enough.
Kenofthedead @ Aug 1st 2007 8:37AM
He'll be slower, but more powerful then Marth I'm betting.
I rather have someone from Famicom Wars instead though. Melee had Fire Emblem for it's Tactical RPG characters, Brawl should have something diffrent.
WarchildX @ Aug 1st 2007 9:02AM
I agree with you 100%. I'd love to see Andy make it into this as a playable character. Also, Nell would be a pretty cool choice.
Playace @ Aug 1st 2007 8:39AM
It makes you wonder about the presence of Marth and Roy. Overall a more than welcome and expected character though.
jay @ Aug 1st 2007 8:49AM
Now give me Sami and Max please.
And Soma Cruz.
WiNG @ Aug 1st 2007 8:51AM

Sweet...hopefully they'll be more fun to control and play with than Marth or Roy.
All I need...All I WANT from Nintendo is to just say that Sonic will NOT be in Brawl.
If you do that Nintendo I'll fucking love you forever.
samfish @ Aug 1st 2007 9:18AM
Oh, I get it. You WANT the internet to explode in a ball of rage.
Seriously, if Sonic isn't in this game, there'll be a metric shit ton of pissed off people.
Jack of No Trades @ Aug 1st 2007 9:24AM
Im not the biggest Nintendo fan, but I would kiss Reggies nasty dirty ass to get Sonic in Brawl.
Kye @ Aug 1st 2007 9:38AM
Run away! run away!
GearsMaster @ Aug 1st 2007 10:09AM
Oh I KNOW it will piss people off but it will piss me off if hes in there.
Sonic in Brawl is an ABOMINATION. It should NEVER happen in my honest opinion. This isn't about fanboy wars or w/e. Its just wrong...plain and simply. Its goes against all the principles of the game. Completely immoral.
Anyways I don't think he'll be in there but I'm SO AFRAID that it might happen.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Aug 1st 2007 10:14AM
I'm assuming you were furious when Snake was announced as a playable character?
Get over it. If Sonic is in Brawl, he's in Brawl. It's already fairly clear that Sonic is more of a Nintendo guy now, with M&S@TOG coming out and the DS/Wii Sonic titles coming out.
GearsMaster @ Aug 1st 2007 11:06AM
I was not furious about Snake.
Sonic is completely different. Especially since he was like the icon of anti nintendo back in the day.
Amd no I'm not going to "get over it". I highly doubt all the sonic worshippers will "get over it" if hes NOT in the game.
Plus the chances of him being the game decrease each day that hes not announced. Snake was announced a long time ago. You'd think Nintendo would have said something about Sonic being in the game (if it were true) by now so they can build more momentum.
bm @ Aug 1st 2007 11:17AM
The thought of Sonic in a Nintendo game on a Nintendo console just makes the kid out of 1993 in me chuckle with joy. Sweet, sweet revenge. Sega does what Nintendon't! Like go bankrupt any sell to a gambling machine company, then whore their character out and be a secondary player in one of Mario's games, like the wannabe he always was! It's just awesome.
Silver R. Wolfe @ Aug 1st 2007 8:53AM
So who's left to exploit?
That must be why Nintendo is starting another franchise.
WiNG @ Aug 1st 2007 8:54AM
awesome
Jack of No Trades @ Aug 1st 2007 8:54AM
They better have a shitload of secret characters. I want some surprises again. I remember going crazy when I unlocked Mew2 and Mr.Game&Watch.
SoulBlade @ Aug 1st 2007 10:13AM
I wholeheartedly agree. Game and Watch was an awesome surprise.
Mr Khan @ Aug 1st 2007 3:20PM
That's what's kind of bothering me about this dojo thing, if they don't throw out all of the secret-characters-from-left-field, then it will be boring, but i also fear that they WILL expose all of the obscure secret characters (another Ness or Game and Watch, my money's on Lip of Panel de Pon fame)
But i figured they would do this, since Fire Emblem is like Final Fantasy in that you rarely have two games relate to each other (the new one for Wii is a direct sequel to the one for GC, but that was because the GC one left so many questions unanswered) That they would introduce characters from the more recent Fire Emblems, the one for GC, the second one for GBA, and the new one for Wii (which they haven't yet mentioned for localization, damnit...)
s256 @ Aug 1st 2007 5:17PM
I don't think they'll announce the unlockable characters on Dojo.
Shadow El @ Aug 1st 2007 9:17AM
Ike looks great in the screenshots. Hopefully they'll add Sothe and then get rid of Marth and Roy.
samfish @ Aug 1st 2007 9:19AM
Oh, that's right...I have two accounts. Wish I knew the other one's password.
Kye @ Aug 1st 2007 9:39AM
Yeah another guy with a sword.
*rolls eyes*

Platy @ Aug 1st 2007 9:46AM
The guys at Joystiq forgot to say that the most awesome gameplay update ever : you can now jump on enemys head like in mario bros xD
Fatass of Kickassness @ Aug 1st 2007 10:01AM
Now we just need midair grab moves to officially make Brawl the fighter with the single most dexterity in it's genre.
WiNG @ Aug 1st 2007 10:05AM
Is that for every character, or just Yoshi?
Fatass of Kickassness @ Aug 1st 2007 10:06AM
Every character. Not only can you do it from the ground to get an extra lift - you can also do it in midair to get extra air AND send your opponent flying downwards.
Mr Khan @ Aug 1st 2007 3:23PM
Its not as simple as the Super Mario series mechanics, you have to time it right to jump on their right, and aim well to boot, not just the latter
As someone informed me (and then research later yielded) its more like how you jump on enemies heads in the Kirby series
Joshua @ Aug 1st 2007 10:04AM
A...A...A...AWESOME!
I just hope he doesn't replace my wonderful Marth! T_T
And this is the first new character announced on Sakurai's blog!
AWESOME!
WiNG @ Aug 1st 2007 10:07AM
Why is my profile image correct, yet I'm still paper mario?
Fatass of Kickassness @ Aug 1st 2007 10:10AM
You can't see the change, but we can - it shows you as Sonic, and it has been for the last few minutes.
crazyyellowguy @ Aug 1st 2007 10:11AM
Wow.. biggest news for me since they started this one update per day thing.
I love Fire Emblem, although path of radiance wasn't the best, I'll take this over nothing.
Phillip @ Aug 1st 2007 10:16AM
Roy was one of my favorite characters in SSB:M. The way you could chain sword attacks together was just awesome, and his defense was terrific!
32_Footsteps @ Aug 1st 2007 10:19AM
I'd expect they wouldn't include Roy or Marth if they went with a different Fire Emblem character instead.
This actually has me wondering if Luka from Mother 3 is going to be playable instead of Ness. I could see it happening. I'm also expecting Salsa the psychic dancing monkey as one of the assist trophies.
In terms of other Nintendo characters being pulled from the woodwork... There's always the guy from Urban Champion. And wouldn't it be fitting if Eggplant Wizard showed his purple mug in the game as a playable character? You could also have any number of appearances from Punch-Out!!! characters, Lolo (since Nintendo now owns HAL), that guy from Urban Champion, the mysterious Hogan of Hogan's Alley, the Wild Gunman, and a few hundred other characters.
Man, so many gamers have no sense of history. You'd think Nintendo was at risk of running out of characters, the way some talk.
Ross Miller @ Aug 1st 2007 11:25AM
I think Lucas over Ness would be a crafty way for Nintendo to "update" the roster while retaining Ness for all those (self included) who love the little guy (in all the ways that are socially appropriate).
That said, Ike's presence also makes me think that both Marth and Roy are done for -- that's not necessarily because of Ike, per se, but that I also feel Sakurai might try to avoid "copycat" characters such as Marth/Roy, Link/Young Link, etc. However, if they think of a way to differentiate the characters in a discernible, non-statistical manner (i.e. with unique special moves and not just "I'm stronger but slower" characteristics), maybe we'll see Marth or Roy pop in. And hopefully Falco.

Hasn't Nintendo owned HAL since... forever?
(Granted, yes, they made MSX/MSX2 games before, but they've stuck with Nintendo-only since the NES days)
Raikage @ Aug 1st 2007 1:20PM
I don't know about you guys, but I would love something else from the Metroid universe... Possibly a Metroid? More likely a Space Pirate or a Chozo. Who knows, maybe Ridley?!
Mr Khan @ Aug 1st 2007 3:28PM
While the obscurity that you guys are mentioning would be good (also Balloon Person from Balloon Fight), i think Captain Olimar would be an obvious choice as he's far more recent, I also think they should take Pichu out and replace it with Lucario, but that's just me
And there WILL be an Animal Crossing character, because they have their own stage, symbol, and now item
32_Footsteps @ Aug 1st 2007 4:09PM
First, it's worth noting that I'm a huge fan of using Ness in SSB as well. There's nothing more fun than hearing "Who the heck would want to play Ness?" and "Why won't Ness die?!?" within two minutes of each other.
As for Animal Crossing characters... I could see them as Assist Trophies, but what kind of combat abilities would they have as a playable character? I would bet good money that the game will be represented, but I doubt it would be as a playable character.
Besides if you want to go for old school, obscure, honoring a Nintendo legend, *and* upping the villain quotient, the game positively demands Tatanga as a playable character.
Tom @ Aug 1st 2007 10:50AM
I hope they include Vanessa, the Pegasus Knight, as an assist-trophy. She could swoop down and attack enemies and/or pick up you or an ally to take you to a place of safety while healing some damage.
KrazyIan @ Aug 1st 2007 10:47AM
I always wondered how Fire Emblem ended up in the SSB series anyways, I didnt think it was that big a franchise.
Platy @ Aug 1st 2007 11:50AM
It was big in japan... and it helped to make the ocident knows that it was a good game.
Most fire emblem games avaliable in english were only translated AFTER marth and roy's sucess in smash bros meele
Word of the street. @ Aug 1st 2007 11:19AM
Yeah I cant believe it,SSBB dojo finally has something of importance!.Cool isnt it for some reason I'm Hyped again,Damn you Newcomer Screen :P
MosquitoControl @ Aug 1st 2007 11:21AM
Never played Fire Emblem, but I'm ecstatic that new challengers are finally coming to light.
Grey Acumen @ Aug 1st 2007 11:55AM
Sonic and Snake are both going to be unlockable characters that will start out as enemies and then after you beat them will become allies.
Alternate to this, there will be an enemy that pops up from the Metal Gear or Sonic series that is introduced as a Antagonist, then Sonic and Snake will show up as AI controlled allies and you will have to beat their respective enemies in order to make Snake and Sonic playable.
Weirdestchild @ Aug 1st 2007 12:21PM
I gonna have to assume that this guy will replace both Marth and Roy, because if he doesn't and they both come back there would be 3 slightly different clone characters.
