Codemasters has announced that the PlayStation 3 version of gratuitously grimy off-road racer, Dirt, will skid into stores this September. Having already crushed several Xbox 360 controllers due to the sheer tension experienced when rapidly hurling a screeching hunk of metal through a tight corner, we're pleased to note that the Playstation 3 version will support sturdy racing wheels and force feedback functionality. Several PlayStation 2 peripherals, including the Logitech Driving Force range, are more than welcome at these rally events.
One feature touted as being unique to the PlayStation 3 is 7.1 audio, bolstered by "third-order Ambisonic soundfields for the most realistic positioning." We're not sure what that is exactly, but it sounds like something we'd enjoy. There's no mention of Sixaxis motion support in the release, though shaking the controller violently would be an appropriate way of strangling Dirt's annoying co-driver. Take that, "Mr. Smooth!"

Dirt!? Hell, there's already a quarter inch of dust on the thing!

wow marcandrer, orginal *and* clever.
can you guys say anything else? even by your fanboys standards, you're only talking to a third of 360 owners.
that means twice the amount of 360 owners are still on their first consoles than not. and even with those stricken by the RROD, all 360 owners are having more fun than you.

yeah cause the dust comment was so original too.
"you're only talking to a third of 360 owners."
never took any buisness classes but I think that if you sell a product and a third of it is defective it is considered a failure in some way.

Your product is a failure when it doesn't sell, doesn't have quality games, has exclusives being lost to the competition, gets many of it's games ported from the competition, and has a faltering fan base.
The PS3 is more of a failure than the 360 has or will be.

you ppl always state the 360 as so much more exclusive but I keep looking on gaming sites and the only great exclusives I can see is GOW and maybe Forza2. I'm probably looking in the wrong places so if you could link me to that great list please do so.
I'm not saying PS3 as more exclusive out right now so don't try to flame me with that.

When does GT5 come out?

I welcome the game with open arms(and a soon emptied wallet), mostly because decent rally games are hard to come by here in the States. Hopefully the multiplayer options are good...
..."third-order Ambisonic soundfields for the most realistic positioning"? Hn, not sure I'm ready for that after all the whiplash of "blast processing" over a decade ago. ;D

If you meant it to be an Italian flag, it's there.
"La vostra icona sembra buona" ...or whatever. Yay babelfish.

Motorstorm is pretty fun and I play it at my buddy's house once in a while.
But I honestly think Dirt is better. PS3 owners will really like this game. Critics scored it a point higher than Motorstorm and I think it has way more replay value.
It kinda flew under the radar a bit because the 360 has some other sweet racing games, whereas Motorstorm, as good as it is, had zero competition.
This is easily the most hectic and intense racing you can get on a next gen console. The rally races are crazy. The only problem is this game can get frustratingly difficult quick.

Yeah, fucking Italy has some of the toughest courses around... I mean, so many blind twists after a 60-70 mile per hour blast up hill, and random bumps and jumps that are hard to see in car...
A must have for whatever system you can get it for. You may not like the multiplayer (I love it), but the single player is DEFINITELY worth it.

How can you use the PS2 racing wheel?
Posted: Aug 1st 2007 12:21PM (Unverified) said
But aren't the PS2 connectors proprietary while the PS3 ones are Standard USB? Hoe do you get the PS2 plug to go into the PS3?
I don't have a PS3 so I may be off base here and have my facts wrong. I'd get a steering wheel for GT4 and my PS2 if I knew that it worked with the PS3 which I may get in the future.
Thanks for the clarification!

Still no real multiplayer I notice.

I thought the developers were the ones that would have to actually support any online activity for their games. Not sure on this, but I think that's why it's optional for devs for the PS3 to add or not to add on-line support.

Well they didn't bother with the PC or 360 version.

No, don't listen to Poisoned. Hes a retard obviously.
There is multiplayer, its just you play it "rally style" where you race the other people's times, not the cars. It would have been nice for the C.O.R.R., but then again, its a rallying game mainly.
Either way, those who have tried it (for the most part) love it, those who haven't, will talk trash.

G25 BOOYAH!
That's what I was hoping for.
An open peripheral policy is fantastic. Reusing my existing excellent (and expensive) wheel for multiple games is far better than having to buy new mediocre wheels (and I'm pointing at you, MS).
Chuck, it says you can use the Driving Force and Driving Force Pro (GT3 wheels). I don't know what the "PS2 racing wheel" is, but if it's your name for the GT3 wheels, you're all set.
I just hope there is NATIVE G25 support in this game and not just GT-Force emulation mode like in GT HD.

the only thing im disappointed by is the time trial online play: i wish they had also included normal online racing. oh well, i still got MotorStorm.
other than that, the game looks and sounds fantastic. definitely AAA material. the 7.1 audio is a nice PS3-exclusive feature which will definitely please audiophiles.

Is there a big difference between 7.1 and 5.1 surround? Please, someone other than a totally hardcore audiofile answer me.

I noticed a difference from when I had it setup at my old house, but I don't have the right space (behind the listening position) for it anymore. I do miss it a bit, because it did envelope you that much more. Sounds that panned from front to back, or vice-versa were pretty damn spectacular, and it made a slight difference in scenes involving lots of stuff going on all around you.
Think of it this way; would you notice sounds coming from behind you? That's what 7.1 offers. Not as dramatic as the 3 speaker to 5 jump, but it's still worth it if you can get it.
