Of course this doesn't have anything with EGM giving the game a 5.5... no way.

It doesn't surprise me.
It looks like a shinier Drakengard and that was a total bomb too.

You know.. Drakengard was a damn fine hack 'n slash game. Most of the reviewers somehow expected something different despite the videos and previews and builds, somehow it never occured to them that this was a hack and slash game. A genre they love to bash and put down and mention everytime a new one comes out as a Dynasty Warriors clone, which means instant suckage. Never mind if you're one of the many gamers who enjoy that genre, fuck you. Your opinion isn't worth crap compared to some doling, balding elitists prick who writes for those rags nowadays. Seems only Play is running around with a decent head on their shoulders nowadays.

As for EGM, let's put it this way. In that same issue, they bashed Luminis Arc and Dynasty Warriors:Gundam. Luminous Arc has decent reviews in Japan and Gundam Musuo was raved about. EGM, at this point, is looking directly at the genre, noticing it's niche, and phoning in reviews. I have a feeling the ONLY reason why Persona 3 got a decent score was it came with a book filled with bright shiny pictures.

I bought Drakengard because the whole dragon thing seemed cool and it was a game by Square Enix.
IT just didn't do it for me.
The dragon battles for me seemed repetitive and while on the ground, it just seemed easier to just summon your dragon to burn all your enemies.

I hope, but know it's unrealistic that they do address the issues that reviewers have had with the game.

Either way, maybe they're working on Home trophies!?

When it comes to giving more value to the game and the system it's exclusive on, a 3-week delay shouldn't dissuade PS3 owners from checking this title out.

who wants to bet that the new version will allow flight control through the analog sticks? anybody?

when Sony made an official post on their official blog of it being done it meant it was gold. for them to stop to presses at this point, timed with the scathing review by EGM means something.

It is odd timing. I'd figured they'd just release a patch after the fact to allow analog control. Now, I wouldn't be surprised to see it considering that seems to be the main complaint, from both the few reviews and from several previews. I think whatever happens, this title is going to get fairly polarized reviews overall.

This definitely puts it right in line with several other releases on both the ps3 and 360 that I plan on picking up though, and I'm sure that holds true for a lot of other people as well. I may put off buying it until much later because of this delay.

There are two reviews out for the game already (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/929230.asp)
One from Playmagazine which gave it a 9/10. The other from gamepro which gave it a 7.5/10.

I have way more respect for Playmagazine so that is a good early sign.

@ Crono

Well first- you are wrong about both of those scores. Play magazine gave the 360 sonic an 8.5/10 (http://www.playmagazine.com/index.php?fuseaction=SiteMain.showGamePage&Game_ID=425) and the PS3 sonic a 5.5/10 (http://www.playmagazine.com/index.php?fuseaction=SiteMain.showGamePage&Game_ID=451). They are both reviewed by Dave Halverson, so the reasons for both scores are explained in the reviews.

Also, my reason for respecting the magazine can be seen in my posts below.

At least it isn't long of a delay

And if it clashes with other titles, do what i'm going to do with Galaxy and NiGHTS 2 (which release within a day of each other), buy one on the spot to play, then buy another, save it for christmas, and ask for what you paid for it as a present...

The system works

Definitely looks suspicious. I think someone is worried about their high profile release getting bad reviews. It's really strange to delay a game for online functionality that has already had final copies sent to editors for review. As someone mentioned before that means the game must have been done. Just tell the truth Sony. Stop lying. And playmagazine gave sonic the hedgehog for the 360 an 8.5 so yeah they tend to inflate their scores. (That game was killed by just about every other publication out there) Hopefully this control problem which clearly must be an issue will be addressed. Too bad the release date will put it in the crosshairs of other high profile releases on other systems as well as the ps3 itself.

It was actually an 8.5- and even though most people didn't like that game, the review was by Dave Halverson, who is probably the biggest Sonic fan in the world, so the score is understandable (if you've followed Dave from back in the Gamefan days, you'll understand his review/love for sonic).

It's just sad. The PS3 is an incredible machine, and I (as many others) would love to have a reason to pick it up, but games, not stats and untapped capabilities, **MAKE OR BREAK A CONSOLE**. Too many examples to cite throughout gaming history.

I defy any PS3 fans to name 1, let alone 3-5 exclusive PS3 titles that make the console a must have right now. For the '360, I can give you half a dozen. For the Wii, of course, the novelty of the system makes it a must have for many (though personally, I own it and think, other than the cool channels, Zelda and RE4, it is a piss poor system).

If you can name some exclusive must have PS3 titles that are out there now, name 3-5 more coming out by the holidays. Again, for the '360 I can name half a dozen (Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3, GTA), and even the shitass Wii will be getting some (as hardcore as it gets for Nintendo) love very soon (Mario, Metroid, Smash Bros., etc).

Lair was, perhaps, the only game worth getting psyched about, and it has looked rocky the whole way through. This news would devastate me as a PS3 fan -- Sony needs to get its shit together; holiday season is high time to strut your stuff, and I see nothing but more stupidity and shitty planning from Sony in the near future. In light of this all, I don't know why anyone would buy a PS3 right now unless they (1) had cash to burn, (2) wanted/needed BluRay now, or (3) were huge Sony fans.

That was funny!

1st of all, GTA IV is going to the PS3 also. Just because the 360 has "Downloadable content" (which is coming next year) doesnt change anything.. 360 fanyboys will be stuck buying more stuff to make your experience "complete". Even Rockstar commented about GTA IV being hard to make for 360 because of "Storage Limitations" (check here in Jostyiq if you think im lying)!

Also, the PS3 has exclusives that will be great. For example, Lair, HS, Uncharted, Haze, and UT3 (with Mods)and etc... You must have not can count or not graduated from HS or received a G.E.D. because that is 5 games I just named right there. So much for your half a dozen titles you could name. Actually, you didnt even name that amount in your whole comment, genius..
As for the WII, which will pass the 360 in sales in a matter of weeks, Nintendo will ALWASY have many more exclusives than M$ and Sony combined! Thats common-sense. If you were a true gamer, you would have known that!

Bottom-line, I rather have a console that has games delayed than to have a console that probably WILL NOT last a whole year with or without me playing it! You keep naming 360 exclusives all you want, it just shows that you must have a lot of time on your hands by searching and name dropping because you are obviously waiting for your 360 to come back from M$.. RROD sucks, huh?

HOLLA!

hey Mike,
I'm guessing you weren't on the math team in high school.

Even at the ps3 fanboy quoted rate of 33 percent failure rate, that still means twice the 360s work as advertised than don't. So technically, according to the worst fanboy odds, you PROBABLY will get one that works fine. Like my launch unit. Even if you don't you're still covered.

Your argument about "whats the point of having games if you're waiting..." is equally juvenile.

I can easily flip it on you and say "whats the point of having a reliable console without having any games to play on it" as my ps3 folding@home score will attest.

You're still waiting. It doesnt take months to get a broken 360 back, it does take months to get ps3 games.

By the time the ps3 has a decent library of games the 360 rrod problems should be totally handled. And the 360 will still have more games.

Lesson over. Holler back.

Mike -

I'm not an Xbox fanboy (or any fanboy) and have both the money and desire to buy a PS3. As for my not having a G.E.D., that's funny, since I have two degrees including one that ends with "D" and begins with "P", and has a little "h" in the middle. That being said, it's sad that I'm on joystiq bantering with children. /SIGH/

I would hasten to add that "half a dozen" is six - you named five. One of which has been delayed, others of which I suspect you care about a lot more than others. Haze? Yawn. Heavenly Sword? Yawn. Uncharted I never heard of, and UT3, though it sounds like it'll be a great title, well, I can live without (given I've had Gears of War for months now).

As for the Wii, which I own, well, sorry if I don't like microgames and kiddie stuff. As I said, I liked Zelda, RE4 was great, and Mario, Metroid, etc. all will be great. But the console just isn't doing it for me as a "hardcore" gamer.

Anyway, you're obviously (1) under 15, and (2) don't speak English as your first language, so please take it easy - I don't want your behavioral or linguistic development to be stunted.

I agree- I think 8.5 is still too high- I love platform games and like some of the new 3-D sonic (I loved sonic adventure for the dreamcast) but I only would have gave sonic on 360 a 6.5 or 7. And while I don't always agree with all the reviews Play Magazine writes, since Gamefan was my favorite magazine from back in the day- and Play Magazine is sort the spiritual successor to Gamefan- I respect what they say about a game, etc.

It's true. Since most games are cross-platform, they don't really show-off each system. That puts a lot of pressure on the PS3's few exclusive games to prove the PS3 is a better machine than the 360 and worth the extra price.

what's sadder still is that Lair, more than any game, was supposed to justify Sony's decision to add motion control into the sixaxis instead of rumble.

and so far, it's this game's biggest weakness.

im a xbox fanboy but even i can see the complete ignorance in all the xbox fanboys. they havent even sent out final review copies of the game, if anything the early reviews are based off of late builds.sony isnt gonna pull a game just cause of egm's supposedly bad review. i mean come on, egm is definitely among the least popular and least credible mags these days. believe if the game was done and review copies were sent out then gamespot/ign/1up would have a review already. of course there is also the fact that the delay was actually found out weeks ago and apparently joystiq just now found out about it, so that egm review wasnt even out yet.

As far as reviews go, I usually (but not always!) agree with EGM/1up...but the REAL test is how well Famitsu scores it. I'd like to know how Lair stacks up to them.

Because guess what happens when any good PS3 game demo / trailer comes out? "Is it looking better than Gears?"
close to 2 years of launch, the 360 still has just one killer app: Gears. And 3-4 good exclusives Forza 2, Crackdwon, Dead rising, PGR3 and thats about it.
While count the PS3 exclusives out by year 1 (thats November 2007): R:FOM, Motorstorm, Lair, Heavenly, Warhawk, Haze and UT3 timed, possibly Drake: uncharted as well.

1. There have yet to to be any impressive PS3 titles to date.

2. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Gears of War, Forza 2, Crackdown, Bioshock, Graw 1&2, Dead Rising, Pray, Lost Planet, Halo 3, The Darkness, Call of Duty 2, Viva Pinata, Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto IV, Overlord, Too Human. All of these are games that have come out in the past two years. They have all shown up or will show up on the 360 first, some of them are exclusives, all are worthy. Grand Theft Auto IV is the exception since it is coming out for both consoles at the same time.

3. All of those exclusive titles you have just named there show little promise. Warhawk is an online only Battlefield clone, Heavenly Sword I have no interest in, I have no idea WHAT FOM is, Lair is looking/sounding glitchier than Gears of War, UT3 creator Epic Games has lost all support from me, and Haze, heck I don't know anything about it, and I don't want to know anything about it. I am a fan of Playstation, but I had to get rid of my PS2 a long time ago, ended up with the Xbox 360, which I enjoy, and I am still skeptical about the Playstation 3 ever really getting a true killer app before 2008. Another problem I have with the Playstation 3 is the fact that they are using the system to push a completely different product, Blu-Ray. I'm not interested in a gaming console that is being used to promote a Movie playing device. I don't really expect anyone to read this so yeah. These are mostly my opinions in this last number in my three point list. So you can ignore it if you want.

It is amazing you left out the exclusives comming this xmas season for the 360 while talking up the ps3 exclusives not even out yet. What happended to Mass Effect, Bioshock, GTA and a little game caled halo 3? RIght now on the PS3 the only really good game worth owning is RSFOM. Motostorm is ok but is only a "must have" because outside of RSFOM there is nothing else out. Do you really think motorstorm is any better than PGR3 at the 360 launch. The truth is the ps3 has no killer app, no "Gears or halo" until MGS4. All those other games are good but I serious doubt they will approach numbers that halo or even GTA will do.
