@Crono

Stop for a second and actually think. Look at Evans post. That shows that numbers wise USB is more than enough. The HDDVD add-on passes it's signal thru USB.

Another product that does it is:

Can video be streamed through a USB connection? I thought it was too slow.

Tell that to Microsoft. They figured out how to stream HD through USB with their HDDVD drive.

I currently use my pc to as a dvr and stream it to my 360. It works, but still has a long way to go. But since streaming on the ps3 is still a bit touchy, this is a great solution for it.

Sounds cool, but the PS3 is going to need another hard drive.

I've got a PVR (through Rogers cable in Canada) and it's got a 160GB drive in it. This gives you about 20hrs of HD recording, or 90hrs of standard-def recording.

Now, you've got an 80GB drive on the latest PS3's which would give you HALF capacity (10hrs HD, 45hrs SD), and that's if you put NOTHING else on this drive.

Start installing games, or downloading content from the PS3 store, save games, etc... all of a sudden you don't have much room to save your favorite TV shows.

If they do add this TV tuner, I'd expect they would also add support for a secondary external hard drive. What good is PVR functionality if you've got no space to record shows?

The PS3 already supports external hard drives. And, unlike certain other consoles, you don't need to use a proprietary hard drive format. Any FAT32 formatted SATA drive will work int he PS3.

Wow. This is actually pretty good. I'm beggining to think the ps3 won't crash and burn after all.

WHo know what has DVR? My computer, which also plays more games, and cost cheaper than a PS3!

The day they add a ATSC digital receiver and PVR capabilities to the PS3 is the day I buy it. Not to say that I wouldn't buy it before then if the right price, but I really couldn't care less about the price if they include some high-def PVR action using over the air digital TV. I've been trying to find a good solution for that without going build-my-own (Myth) or paying a monthly fee (cable provider).

Gee Remember how the PS2 took over the throne from the Dreamcast by promising good games to come. Well the Dreamcast was still a better machine and you know what, the 360 & Wii are better machines now, only this time the good guys will win and Sony can screw themselves softly. Sony no one cares about your shit promises. Enjoy.

What's the big deal? The Xbox 360 has been doing this since launch if you have a Media Center PC with Tuner card. I suppose it's interesting that it's right on the console... but I like it better this way so I can keep all my recorded shows on my network and not have them strung about my console HDD.

I'll stick with my HTPC, thankyuhverymuch.
I'd like to avoid proprietary formats, if possible.

Everyone seems happy that the ps3 is getting home entertainment functionality. But, how many of you have ps2s that stopped playing DVDs after a while? I don't really expect quality control on ps3s to have gone up by much. It's probably made to break like so many other consumer goods.

I would hope they wouldn't add the dvr into the ps3 itself and force a new sku. That seems more likely than some external platform or box sitting separate from the console though.

Basically, when should I buy a ps3 if there's always some new addition around the corner? If it's always going to be $600 then I'll never have the temporary lapse in sanity to buy it.

Not only that, but I hate having all of my devices in one. If it breaks, then I'm ass out for weeks on ALL entertainment until I send it back to Sony and pay the obligatory repair fees because it magically broke JUST outside of the warranty expiration.

dont expect M$ to do something like this for 360 since it would destroy their current tv download service (since you have to pay per episode, which is BS to start with). yes i know you can stream stuff onto the 360 from PC, but most dont or wont do that.

"dont expect M$ to do something like this for 360 since it would destroy their current tv download service."

You have no idea what your talking about. Every time I press the media center button on my 360 remote, "recorded tv" is the first option to pop up, and it's been there since day one. On top of that, it also gives you the option to watch, record, and replay movies and access other movie download programs such as vongo and movie link (also there on day one).

Great...just great...

Yet ANOTHER half-baked attempt for Sony to focus on rather then the most important thing.....GAMES.

Why do I need another DVR??? I have one in my Cable Box....I have one in my PC....I have one on my Laptop....and I am for damn sure I'll have a better performing one for sure to be in my 360.

I think no one noticed that this is only launching in New zealand so far....

and microsoft has been focusing on IPTV on the 360 for a while now....the 360 is supposed to get DVR and HDTV functionality between now and sometime next year....

This "It's not just for games" excuse would've been easier to swallow if they had actually put in stuff like this DVR functionality from the get go.

I've already decided to wait for a long while before buying a PS3, and this just cements my thoughts that I don't like the PS3 at its current standing.
