Unveiled in June at Apple's WWDC conference, id Software's new IP has been finally given a proper identity at QuakeCon 2007 -- and it's not Return to Quoom 3D. Shacknews reports that Rage, the first game to be built upon the id Tech 5 graphics engine, will feature a strong driving element through expansive outdoor environments, in addition to the frenzied firing of unnecessarily large weapons that gamers have come to expect from the developer. Speaking at a QuakeCon keynote, id co-founder and programmer John Carmack noted, "Everybody knows we're going to do a good job with the run and gun action stuff...but we are branching out."
Carmack did not specify which platforms he'd be unleashing the Rage upon, but explained that the game and its obscenely large textures would be shipping on two DVD discs (day and night cycles confirmed!) and one Blu-ray disc. We reckon that implies the same platforms id targeted for their new engine at the WWDC conference, namely PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac. We'll be sure to let you know once platforms have been officially designated.
Hah, that brings back great memories of Popeye. (Particularly the Spanish Popeye. That show is Hilarious when you don't understand what they are saying!)
Is it a racing (with guns) game? An action game with an emphasis on vehicular homicides? What is it?
Nice to see id is pushing the texture envelope and making Sony feel better about using a high capacity optical format while not being snobs about it and excluding the 360. Two disc value FTW!
once again a news confirming that DVDs are not enough anymore.. of course we'll hear all the "I don't care changing my discs" but you should just stop it before it gets embarassing.
Q: So was it embarassing to swap discs on PlayStation?
A: No, but PS1 was out before DVD drives, so it's ok.
Q: Do you realize the 360 was out before HD DVD and Blu-ray drives were finalized?
A: N...I mean yes... But MS should've waited UNTIL a high capacity optical format was released!
This argument goes nowhere. MS decided DVD had plenty of life left in it, as did Nintendo, both of which are outselling the PS3 globally- who made the wisest decision? Time will tell...
And 640k was never an MS imposed limitation, it was Intel's limitation. And MS were the ones who broke that limitation (while maintaining compatibility) with Windows/386, which is what ultimately lead to the death of OS/2.
Stop with the "DVD isn't enough" crap already. The machine is coming up on two years already and not one game has come out in the USA yet that needs a second disc. It's friggin' NEO-GEO Mega Cart all over again. I own a PS3 and approve of this message :p
The reason games haven't used more than one DVD is because it's a poorer experience. Developers have been clamouring for more disk space since the 360 was introduced. Read some of the questions asked at the X0x conferences - there are quite a few pleas to use the HDDVD drive. Mass Effect barely fit on to a DVD, as did Project Gotham.
It's an extra limitation. That leads to more developer effort (and consequently higher dev costs), or a scaled-down experience. Sony keeps pushing around this "ten year plan" phrase, and seeing the problems with Microsoft's insistence on DVD, it's a lot easier to believe the PS3 is a long-term console.
When the MAJORITY of games exceed DVD9 capacity, then we can talk. A small minority does not justify adding $200 to the price of the console. It's not like disc swapping has never been done before on a console. In fact, until this generation I've never even heard of anyone lamenting about a game with more than one disc. It's really quite petty. The only ones who seem to care are the people who DON'T own a Wii or 360.
Am I the only person that thought "motorstorm" after seeing the racing bits? After seeing Haze, Crysis and the Serious3 engine...I can't be impressed with Rage. Oh did someone say Killzone 2 and UT3? Doesn't matter what anyone says...360 would have been better served with a HD=DVD drive built in. Why is more storage a bad thing?
I think you guys that are unimpressed by the engine are looking at it from a totally different perspective than you should. This is not a "zomg go upgrade your computer to 8 cores 10 gb of ram and 8 SLI 8800s / phenom" engine where the bar is raised in terms of making something look more realistic and lifelike (like for example Crysis/UT). It's a totally different thing: the point for the engine is to ease up game developing...
oops sorry, i kinda copy/pasted that from a reply i did on the Carmack news.
Anyway the point is that now they can actually focus on making a better gaming experience instead of obsessing over graphical engines so much (which is not a bad thing, but i think we all agree gameplay > graphics). The game looks like a refreshing change from current FPS trends and I'm curious if they can actually pull it off.
ZOMG! This game is going to require 2 discs on the 360! The world is ending. Please inform the president and the vice president. Next we must evacuate all New York, LA, Philidephia, Washington D.C. and all the other major US cities!
This is madness.
Really sony fanboys...a bit of an overreaction don't you think? One game is going to require 2 discs and you act like BluRay is the cure for AIDs or something when it comes to gaming.
Just calm down there. As a 360 owner I'm glad that the game is coming out for the 360 and will contain everything that the company wanted it to have. And as a result of that I'm both willing and happy that they decided to use 2 discs.
Furthermore do we REALLY need to turn this thread into a flame war?
Why can't we BOTH be glad that the game is coming out for both systems? It was announced at the same time (today I mean). Its not a system is losing an exclusive.
There really is no reason to flame the 360 or 360 owners. MS made a decision. And I firmly believe they made a good one. Especially given that BluRay wasn't out then. And Nintendo which could have used BluRay decided to pass.
Different strokes for different folks right?
Lets just keep this civil. 1 more disc isn't going to shaft 360 owners. 1 more disc isn't that huge a deal. Especially since all the content will be there.
I know Microsoft said they'd NEVER allow games to be run from the HD-DVD drive--but it would be nice if they loosened that restriction. At the very least, I'm hoping id will allow a large chunk of the game to be placed on the hard drive so that disc swapping won't be necessary for those with sufficient hard drive space.
I have to admit, as a 360 owner, I would prefer to have the game on a single disc.
More storage is never a bad thing. The question is it worth the cost? I mean 4GB of RAM is a good thing too, so are 1TB HDDs, so why didn't Sony or MS slap those in their consoles? Consoles aren't meant to be bleeding edge elitist snob hardware, they are meant to be mainstream audience gaming platforms. If hardware is your cup of tea there are plenty of multi-thousand dollar PC rigs out there to buy.
Now if MS could've included an HD DVD drive in the 360 for the same price ($400), then it would be a different story. Then again, they would've had to wait 6-12 months longer to launch and they might not have the backing, support or library they currently have because of that decision. It was a trade off, but one that has paid off for MS so far it seems.
I don't get it... I remember when FF7 came out we would all brag about it "it's so sweet it needs 3 discs!" and then I felt like a badass when I bought baldur's gate because it needed FIVE discs... now it's a bad thing? Regardless I haven't bought a FPS since battlefield 1942 and probably won't buy one until Halo 3
@ spartacus so instead, we have a console that released too early that has too many hardware issues, WILL have storage issues in the future and nickel and dimes you to death with modular bullshit? Yeah, that's brilliant. I got your elitist snobs hanging right here buddy.
Its probably only on disc for Xbox 360. The PC and Mac version are probably the only multidisc versions. Why you ask? The 360 would only need one set of textures. The PC and Mac would require different sets at varying qualities so the game can be scalable over a wide range of hardware.
"This argument goes nowhere. MS decided DVD had plenty of life left in it, as did Nintendo, both of which are outselling the PS3 globally- who made the wisest decision? Time will tell..."
yeah the wii is a last generation console (about as powerful as xbox 180) so yeah dvd was the right choice for them, wii's limitations are clear.
and the xbox 360 is aparently a next gen console, but it has the resources of a last gen - dvd.
