Keyboard and mouse support for UT3 PS3
Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein has confirmed on the official forums that Unreal Tournament 3 for the PlayStation 3 will support keyboard and mouse.
"[Designer Steve Polge] is confident we are doing it in a way that will be balanced without feeling "gimped" for either side," he said. Rein also added that there will be options to "allow people to choose whether or not they want to allow mixed controller vs. keyboard/mouse games or not." In our recent interview with Rein, he was still unsure if this feature would be implemented.
Will the battle for the best first-person shooter controls -- gamepad or keyboard and mouse -- now be fought locally? Is this further evidence that Epic will implement the PS3 and PC cross-platform multiplayer? Our fingers are crossed.

Yay!
That is all.
bl13 @ Aug 3rd 2007 8:29PM
Wow this is sweet. Now add cross platform between PC and PS3 KB+M and we're all set.
muppetmeth @ Aug 3rd 2007 8:36PM
Sounds like the 360 got the stinky ass end of the Unreal stick.
PSN: ummfada @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:29PM
they got a good end of the EPIC stick...
OMGOMG @ Aug 3rd 2007 8:34PM
I'm guessing this will have more comments than RE: Africa.
Personally, mouse and keyboard is not that big a deal for me, but it is for alot of people. So yay for those guys.
Mr Intel @ Aug 3rd 2007 8:38PM
i just cant wait for this game to drop pure excellence
rom @ Aug 3rd 2007 8:38PM
Kind of sucks for all those PS3 players that wont be setting it up. I for one wouldn't. Having a keyboard and mouse set up in the living room is a pain in the ass for me.
Matt B @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:16PM
Get a FragFX or a bluetooth set bruh.
Stevo @ Aug 3rd 2007 8:39PM
Pretty sweet- If I was getting this for the PS3, I'd definitely get the keyboard/mouse combo...
waves @ Aug 3rd 2007 8:52PM
Nice! This game is starting to really catch my eye. Not because I like the UT series. I actually find it pretty boring. But for all the precedents it seems to be setting for the PS3:
An improved UT3 engine
Free user created content from PC users
FPS keyboard and mouse support
rruss79 @ Aug 3rd 2007 8:55PM
If you can use a USB or Bluetooth Keyboard and mouse, this may not be a bad deal at all. Personally I have no great intereat in having a mouse and keyboard in my living room but if Sony can solve that Stupid Bluetooh problem where it will cutout while you are playing this might put the PS3 as the crossover system for PC gamers.
waves @ Aug 3rd 2007 8:56PM
I'm almost sure USB would work. Anyone know about bluetooth?
bl13 @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:01PM
My USB wireless keyboard works with no problems on PS3. I'm not sure about bluetooth but my controller has never lost connection in-game so I imagine they fixed that problem.
ExMcloud @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:06PM
Thank you Epic cuz that Six Axis sux for FPS. I love me some PS3 but change that damn controller for FPS or sumthin.

No, you just suck using a Sixaxis controller.
rruss79 @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:08PM
No they have not fixed the problem unless the latest updates have because the last time I played it ws there.
bl13 @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:12PM
Hmm, I only got mine recently so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.
BNinjaC @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:13PM
UT3 on PS3 just got my money...
geez between Epic and id I'll soon be a poor man. It's just like the good old days :)
Vince UK @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:13PM
You'll find me in the sixaxis only lobby, crabbing my hand about on a keyboard and balancing a mouse mat on my sofa doesn't sound like fun.
Big Ed @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:21PM
I want that keyboard!
Chimuel @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:24PM
Finally I can play with my G15 and my G7 on a console! I love you SONY for making such a flexible piece of hardware.
Marasai @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:33PM
More like it requires KB+M. The sixaxis users are going to be owned so hard by KBM users it won't even be funny. Unless of course KBM is horribly gimped...thus reducing the entire point of having it.
Matt B @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:19PM
No more than 360 gamepad players.
Seroth @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:45PM
So, what are the chances that the 360 version will support keyboard and mouse? If it ends up not having it, looks like I'm gonna be getting a PS3 in the future...
Triforceowner @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:56PM
Don't you guys want a difference? Like, when I play Gears of War, the controls are so well done I don't have any trouble. Shouldn't that be how the experience is for console gamers in Unreal 3? Shouldn't we be asking our developers to push the ability of dual-analog past the norm instead of having them say, "Mouse and keyboard support!" I hope they really work through the dual-analog controls for the PS3 and 360.
sheppy @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:16PM
Well, personally, it's like this. I like to veg out on the couch with my console games. So I'll be using the dual shock. Especially since I use a mouse and keyboard for 50-60 hours a week as my job and my hobby. However, there are some purists. One way is the only way in their eyes. And rather than trying to convince a group that will not be convinced, why NOT through out that support? After all, PS3 has been mouse and keyboard compatible since launch and the supplies are a dime a dozen to do so. So rather than complaining that a company isn't willing to break the control molds, recognize that they are offering support as well as filtering to accomidate both styles.
Personally, I'm going to TRY and make a fallen angel mod where the Six Axis can control flight.
Triforceowner @ Aug 4th 2007 12:44PM
I don't know. Wouldn't the purists pick up the PC version for mod building? I'm not really trying to be a devil's advocate, but I can't see a purist going for PS3 over PC.
Marasai @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:28PM
@ Matt b
Yes more. See when i play halo or UT3 on my 360, I am playing against other pad users. Level playing field.
A ps3 UT3 player will not have a level playing feild when someone is going after him with KBM. The whole appeal of KBM is the huge leap in accuracy. accuracy which would make playing against pad users unfair. unless the KBM users were gimped....thus rendering the KBM advantage meaningless.
Sam @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:36PM
I believe that Mat was talking about Windows Live and Xbox Live connectivity, like in Shadowrun where 360 users play against PC users. The PC users have an advantage over the 360 users.
Patrick @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:42PM
you know i play alot of both and i dont see a big difference in accuracy
Matt B @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:54PM
If you read the interviews, you would know that there is going to be a filter to search by(ie no KB&M or dont care).
Don't be a pussy, or at least don't be one publicly. Play toward your own weakness.
Marasai @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:41PM
@ sam
I don't think they do, due to gimping. Besides, Shadowrun victory is more determined by what mix of power gadgets and magic you have, rather than twitch shooting. the best twitch shooter in the world will lose badly in shadowrun if he doesn't have a good sense of what moves to use.
Sam @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:56PM
Thats very true, I will admit that I havent played Shadowrun on the PC, but in a twitch shooter it would seem like the PC would be easier to play on.
Matt B @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:57PM
THis isn't a shadowrun comparison so wtf? If shodowrun is not your cup of tea then why bring it into a warhawk thread?
Marasai @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:00PM
I didn't bring Shadowrun into this. Someone else did. i kindof enjoyed Shadowrun. But playing it made me wish i knew the story that goes along with it.
Sam @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:07PM
@Matt B
I brought Shadowrun up because people with KB+M can play people against people with controllers. Thats part of the point of the article =/
I am a PS3 owner with Warhawk preordered...there can be discussions involving a 360 and a PS3 without Fanboyism...

Unfortunately your mother isn't get paid as much as a prostitute these days hence why you can't afford a PlayStation 3.
Marasai @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:01PM
@ Matt
I did read interviews. but it doesn't matter. if you seperate KBM players it once again negates the whole point of using KBM on a console. At that point you might as well just get it on the pc.
Any KBM/pad match will have to be grossly unfair for someone.
sheppy @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:19PM
Actually, if read the interviews, like you claimed you did, you would know that Mark Rein has stated pad players have a CLEAR advantage with vehicles compared to KD+M system. A smart clan would play up both sides of this. But if not, as stated above, you can use filters.
"But, dere, then the point of including KBM support would be negated because then people could just avoid the matches where they would be at a clear disadvantage and that would obviously be unfair."
I mean, I'm all for forming an opinion based on facts. But all the present facts beat the piss out of your opinion yet you still clinge to it. Like some console bashing Linus. Well guess what, bitch. The Snoopy of truth is coming and he WANTS your blankie. Fear him.
Marasai @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:26PM
Like I said, just a few centimeters above your little mad scribbling, to make things 'equal' someone is getting gimped somehow. So if the KBM is worse with vehicles then that would be where the gimp factor is. Which once again, completely invalidates the point of having KBM. The onlyu point in having KBM is that it is superior to dual analog. if you make it so that you aren't going to play with guys using different controls, then you might as well go on the pc where you won't have a horribly segregated community.
sheppy @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:40PM
Horribly segregated? Do you even PLAY online games? You seem completely unfamiliar with lobby systems in general. Let's put it this way... earlier today, I was playing UT2004. In the main lobby, the top 7 servers were clan specific. You needed to either be in the clan or a rival clan. Needed passwords. As I found a game which was open to players, I found a notice stating rocketwhores will be booted. That's nice. Meanwhile, each other game on the servers were limited to play types, map rotations, and even mods.
So in essence, the apparently "all in one big happy family" setting as the PC universe you admire so simply isn't one big happy family. Play types, skill levels, locked games, clan matches, personal servers, etc... all that shit segregates the population as well. All these options built into game creation in any given game segregates the userbase. The KBM related features are just one more option.
This isn't some grand conspiracy, it's an option. This isn't going to cause a massive breaking of the userbase anymore than Shotty Snipers as a gametype on Halo 3 will. I mean, let's break it down like this.
You're essentially complaining about options. As if this one checkmark on the gametype setup is going to be the breaking point as your mind fractuals into thousands of tiny pieces, all of which agree Rainbow Bright is fucking hot. That's the evidence of true insanity, right there.
So why not just play on PC then? I don't know, man. A PS3 is $600 and will remain a device that will not need to be upgraded for 6 years. A gaming level PC is starting at $1400 and upgrades required to cusp every two years, ranging from $300-$1000. Gee, I don't know, why WOULD anyone just want to play on PS3?
Marasai @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:53PM
wow you really are off in your own little world aren't you?
I don't like the PC environment, I hate it. Simply put, if you give gamers the option of NOT playing with those who are going to own the living shit out of the due to superior control they are likely going to take it. Fracturing the already small online community...much like that P model you spoke of.
I know it's an option, not a conspiracy. And I'm not complaining about its inclusion so much as the delusion that somehow this is some awesome new feature that changed the world as we know it. It is an option that could potentially screw with competetive gameplay by giving some people an unfair advantage.
bl13 @ Aug 4th 2007 12:08AM
"if you seperate KBM players it once again negates the whole point of using KBM on a console. At that point you might as well just get it on the pc."
No it doesn't. My PC can't run UT3. Using KB+M on a console against PC players is exactly what I want.
Yes if they don't gimp the KB+M controls then controller users have a disadvantage in a twitch shooter, but since they have the option to search for controller only matches, they really can't complain if they decide to join a game with KB+M players.
migz7 @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:33PM
My roots are keyboard/mouse. Even so I have done a 90% transition to gaming on my 360 wich I dearly love. I have fairly gotten used to playing FPS and 3rd person shooters on a gamepad. But deep down inside I long for the precise control that only a keyboard/mouse combo can give you. Well, looks like the PS3 is going to be the place to be for k/m gamers that are tired of upgrading their PCs every 3 to 6 month. Looks like I'm going to get a PS3. Do you hear me Microsoft??? Wake up!
