Anyways, if they're saying that it doesn't matter what size texuter you put. How would the ps3's memory be a problem. Wether a 64,000 x 64,000 or 108,000 x 108,000! That a huge jump, there has to be some maximum limit or some type of compression or streaming. (or all of the above) Otherwise memory and performance with the textures would matter and the size of the texture would matter...

Memory matters for other things too, rendering code, AI, geometry, etc. The fact that PS3 effectively only has 160MB in which to execute a program is quite a limiting factor.
Check out the Game Informer interview for more info.

Biggie. My point is if texture can be so massive on the 360's 480MB. What's stopping it from being at least half as massive on the PS3. He said the size of the texture doesn't matter so how should the amount of memory matter? There has to be a limit even on the 360 or PC. If there can be a limit on the ps3. Plus, it's actually 172MB, the OS footprint was reduced:

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/05/14/new-playstation-3
-sdk-released-os-memory-footprint-lessened/

Plus there has to be some sort of use of the rest of the other 256MB the ps3 has in RAM. The problem is Carmack is trying to make it so that his thing works on all platforms. A PC works very similar to how the 360 but the ps3 is different. If you try to make a game on the ps3 like how you make a 360 game. That's how you get crappy ports. The ps3 is different and the games needs to be redone to work properly with the ps3's architecture so that games work just as good as the 360. This is a nightmare for work like Carmack is doing but for devs that get to optimize games specifically for the ps3 architecture, they're not really complaining or having as hard a time as Carmack...

For those who are 'unimpressed', if you had been in the id tech 5 demo and tools demonstration today (at quakecon), you'd damn sure be impressed.

I don't give a shit WHAT kind of quality video you've seen floating around the internet, it simply isn't the same as sitting there and seeing the game run on the hardware first hand. It's wonderful. Maybe not 'OMGWTF' above Unreal3, but very much on par with it. Sure, it's got a different style and look than UE3, but I've always preferred the way id games 'feel'. They're always quite solid feeling, and therefore games built on their engines feel the same. Their tech will win the day, even if their games won't.

Still, all in all, I'm VERY excited about id's new project, both engine and game.

A lot of people here are missing the point. It's not really about taking full advantage of the system, it's about reducing technical issues and making things easier for people who don't do coding.

Visually, I've been fairly unimpressed with ID's games (to say nothing about gameplay), but they specialize in making proper, manageable code. Anything that makes things easier for artists and lets developers better gauge their budgets is good in my book.

"Of all the consoles right now however, the 360 has the fastest RAM available (EDRAM @ 256Gb/s or 32 GB/sec). "

You're joking right? You do realise that in the context of RAM that you're talking about, eDRAM is completely irrelevant? Not only is eDRAM also present on the PS3 as the L2 cache, it's also present on an abundance of modern consoles including the PSP and Wii.

BulletToothTony-you have no idea what you are talking about-you are a simple PS/3 fanboi. You are exceptionally good at demonstrating ignorance though.

Go take some computer science classes, since John Carmack helped to define the first person shooter genre.

People are focusing on the flame-able side of this interview. Yes, the PS3 has some flaws and bottlenecks when it comes to making a game and has the advantage of larger storage media. Carmack, who is NOT a fanboy like the tards here, briefly points out each, though he doesn't dwell on them because they are minor details.

The truly awesome thing about this interview is that 4 platforms are receiving the same code and outputting the game. The engine is vastly easier to program for. This means that devs can conceivably make the same game cheaper and release to multi platforms.

Freeing up resources will help the games elsewhere. This engine is a powerful tool.

@ BulletToothTony

Yes the ps3's cell processor can use the GPU's ram if it needs it, but it wont access it as fast as the memory that is dedicated to the CPU itself. That is a fact, not a fanboy's wetdream! Just like Bluray is 50GB of data (fact). And just like BluRay has a slithly slower data transfert speed than the dvd drive in the Xbox360 (fact).
The guy who is a hell of a great programmer actually says that the PS3 has some bottlenecks when they use it to run their Middleware (game engine), and their engine is made to be the best possible multi-platform engine they could think of !!! Sure if they made a PS3 exclusive title they would make it even better and all that stuff, but he is doing this in a multi-platform effort in order to make really awesome games and get to make money off em...
To me, the new reality of gaming in this and other generations is that with the budgets these games need, it's almost crazy (in all cases not just ps3 but xbox360 also)to make a huge game for just one machine (whose making mac only games ??? lol). That may be why Microsoft made the xbox and xbox360 were made a lot like PCs.. that way they try to make games that are "xbox360/games4windows exclusives" and they point out to DEVs that they will have a big audience potential since PCs are by far the biggest selling games machines....

And dont diss Carmack just because he looks like the nerdiest guy in the world... Id rather have him making games than a really cool looking moron ( Im even sure you wont have to stare at his face in order to play his games)!

PS.: Please learn how to write, Im not even english and i can spot your mistakes a mile away !!!

i admire Carmack he is one of the pioneers in terms of technology - not because he writes the best code but because he can write the best usable code - it has great bang for the buck. Also i like that he has consistently given out the source codes for his past works and isnt a patent/copyright fiend.

what he's trying to do with tech 5 is great and really opens up the process for the designers and art teams.

alltho i'm quite sure there is somenone who wont like this.

Neither Microsoft XBOX nor PS3 will like this ... why ? because THEY DONT WANT Cross platform games ... because that doesnt make their consoles a neccesity ... its so obvious when people like sony are constantly trying to get PS3 only titles etc.

i hope TECH 5 and similar technologies will be embraced by game developers and i hope consoles wont try to pressure - or make it harder for tech5 devs to program.

BTW. This is the same reason (i think) that the PS3 has a different architecture and is tough to program.

THEY WANTED IT TO BE DIFFERENT TO PROGRAM - i'm not saying its not remarkable but certain technology design features werent essential yet they decided to lay them out so that someone developing a game for PS3 would have a hard time to port it without extra costs.

its a way of promoting exclussivity.

I'm no PS3 hater - i love what i've seen so far in terms of performance... but the specs are making it hard for remarkable products to reach the platform.

"Why are you trying to defend PS3 by dissing Carmack? If he think the PS3 has design issues, the PS3 has design issues. The man knows what he is talking about when it comes to gaming hardware and programing for it."

The term, "jack of all trades but a master of none" comes to mind when talking about Carmack. Whilst he might substantially know a lot about each platform, his opinion is not THE ultimate basis to form your own opinion. It's funny you mention, "if he thinks the PS3 has design issues, the PS3 has design issues" considering PlayStation 3 engineers in the Far East seem to think drastically different than you and of course, Carmack.

Overall, if this warrants a purchase, I'll purchase it for my iMac 24" or PS3. Why? Because it will run shit-hot better than it will on PC/Xbox 360.

All of you are amusing... acting as if you all know shit about development issues etc. Goodness... fucking little boys without brains.

That doesn't make any sense. So far multiplatform games have all run better on the 360, and since the Mac is just a PC now with a different OS, it will probably run nearly identically as it would on a similarly equipped PC. The advantage PC's have is that you can built them yourself and put in the latest hardware. Mac's are never going to keep up in gaming with a build it yourself PC, unless you have so much money you can buy a new Mac every year.

Ok people, lets put it this way...

A long time ago, in the beginning of the century, cameras were hand cranked. The reason why lots of old footage looks jumpy is because depending on the speed you cranked it depended on the FPS on it.

Directors hired teams to rotate and tried all kind of film and camera tricks to hid the effect but it was a major hurdel.

Now someone came along an invented a motorized crank that we still used today. You can set this things at any speed and it will do that speed consistently without tiering out. What does this mean?

No jerks. You can also have it go at different speeds like fast and slow motion. Most of all, the director does not have to worry about the camera anymore. He can just work on directing a good movie while the Camera people can figure out the motorized camera and it will have no impact on what he has to do.

That is what is happening here. Each unit can do what they do and not have to worry, so instead of focusing on bugs and 360 VS PS3, they can just focus on actually making a good game. Thus games will not be judged so much on the output of the engine they work on, but the overall creativity of the team.

Disruptive Technology at its best. :D

What the hell is that? Fan-girl? Oh wait, it's supposed to be far worse than being a fan-boy because you are then name-calling someone a fanboy but then to make it sound more insulting, you're using the old "Heh, he's a boy so name-calling him a girl is bad! Hehehe, I like being bad!" Kid, gtfo or grow up. Actually, do both.

Thats really impressive to get an engine to run on 4 different platforms in that short amount of time. I'm still skeptical about the new game. Doesn't seem like a fresh concept to me. More of doom/quake mechanics and they threw in some motorstorm racing.

you are kind of missing the point when you say "if this warrants a purchase"... as usual for id, this game will be a glorified ad for their engine. and if this engine is as easy to use to make cross platform games as carmack is saying, then many developers will license the engine and make a variety of games with it. so we'll all be likely to ultimately end up with games that use this engine. and competitors will probably add this feature to their engines in the future as well.

No developer is going to build their engines from scratch to work around the hardware limitations of the PS3 - they are going to use multi-platform engines and just put up with the weaker PS3 performance.

Go back to 1995 and you have developers using PS engines on the Saturn. They didn't care that only one of its RISC processors was being used as a result. They didn't care that companies like Lobotomy, CS Team, AM2 and AM3 could do stuff on the console that wasn't possible on the Playstation - all that mattered was getting games on both consoles for minimal effort. That's the way things worked then and going from the way PS3 games always look rougher or run slower than their 360 counterparts, that's the way things work now.

Not that it bothers me too much - a console that's as powerful as the PS3, costs a lot less and has a shitload more games is a better investment no matter what engine a developer goes with. =)

Don't make me fucking laugh. If John Carmack finds it hard to code for PlayStation 3, that is his lack of skill in that department and not the overall lack of the console itself. It's funny how engineers and developers from the Far East have little to no problems with PlayStation 3 development. "the weaker PS3 perfomance" my ass, gtfo fool.
