20GB PS3s on sale for $450 at Gamestop
We were on the edge about whether or not to bring this to your attention, because we didn't know how they would be in stock. But, just so you know, you can now buy a 20GB PS3 for $450 at Gamestop.com. It's weird, largely because it's just not really a good bargain. Is saving $50 bucks really a fair trade for a hard drive with less space than your discs? We don't think so.But hey, maybe you've got an extra hard drive just lying around, who are we to say? Maybe you just like depriving yourself. Either way, we doubt these will last long, so you may want to act fast if you're in the market.
[Thanks, Justin]

You can buy 80GB - 320GB for $40-$120.
KVN @ Aug 6th 2007 9:40AM
I think this is a very good deal if i had $450 i'll buy that.

damn where did my comment go? anyways im buying one i have a few HD's lying around that are 250 gigs.

Pass. Lemme see a Lair review with higher than across-the-board-fives, and I'll consider it.
WiNG @ Aug 6th 2007 10:02AM
Now, I am not gonnna buy a PS3 or anything, but it IS a good deal in terms of comparative pricing with other SKUs (haha there I said SKU).
As pointed out you can easily get a larger HDD for $50 or around there. Hell probably can get an 80GB for $10 if you have a friend who's ditching one for a bigger one.
Mogg @ Aug 6th 2007 10:03AM
I've been thinking about jumping on this the past 24 hours.
I never bought a PS2, so I'd be playing PS2 games more than anything until the good games come out.
Jnas @ Aug 6th 2007 10:06AM
Sony aren't going to be very happy with Gamestop, if they did this without consulting them. But $50 for 40 gigs off? Thats a rip. If it was 75-100 off then it would be so much more attractive.
copa @ Aug 6th 2007 10:20AM
Sony isn't going to be happy?!? Exactly how was Gamestop supposed to shovel all of those dust-covered 20 Gig units out of their warehouse while they are priced exactly the same as the 60 Gig units?
felixlighter @ Aug 6th 2007 10:07AM
For $50 more dollars I would buy the 60 gig version for some of hardware extras and the extra storage out of the gate. At $400, you'd have me. Right now I'm planning on using my next tax refund to pick up a PS3 so I'm sure the 20 gig and even the 60 gig consoles will be gone at that point.
felixlighter @ Aug 6th 2007 10:10AM
I saw that but I'm always reluctant to jump on these credit card deals. Credit card companies are notorious for fleecing customers.
RoboChamp @ Aug 6th 2007 10:19AM
Guys, do it. I got my PS3 for $350 4 MONTHS AGO with the same deal. I traded in my PS2 to Gamestop for $100 during a special deal, and used the credit card to subtract $150 from the first purchase, that being the PS3.
You guys can do the without the PS2. And you can just cancel the card after the first bill.
Rob Accomando @ Aug 6th 2007 10:26AM
It might be a good deal, but what games does it have that make it worth while?
If I had $450 to blow I'd probably just spend it on some Xbox360/Wii/PS2/PSP/DS games that I've not gotten yet.
Chinese Man @ Aug 6th 2007 10:34AM

Sony needs to lower their price some more before they get my money. I guess i won't be buying a PS3 until 2009. There price is just too high.
Same goes for MS. Until they fix their console, i won't be buying it.
I'll just stick to playing my PS2,NDS and PSP. They have all the better games anyway. (Wii comes later)
Jake @ Aug 6th 2007 10:40AM
What if you don't care about extra HDD space, Wi-Fi, or Memory Card slots and just want a cheaper way to own a PS3 and play the exclusives and HD movies. I certainly fall into that catergory. If I was only to own one system, I'd go big. But looking at the PS3 as a third system I strictly want a basic way to play all the games, you know. Once any version hits $300, or at the very least $400 with some truly sick games (better than anything this Fall, or ever on any system).
HB96st @ Aug 6th 2007 10:54AM
Weak..
Just goes to show that there are still 20gb machines still out there that NOBODY WANTS TO BUY. It was funny how Sony stated that they were "phasing out" the 20, but they acted like the 20 was sold out... Earth to the SDF.. The 20gb PS3 is alive and well in the U.S.!!
Mike Healy @ Aug 6th 2007 10:57PM
I found a 20g PS3 off Craigs List for $350 and that was definitely worth it. I also never owned a PS2. I would check Craigs List before forking over the money to Gamestop.
HB96st @ Aug 6th 2007 11:04AM
I got a couple of friends left that still own PS3's.. They always complain about the games it has.. All they play is Fight Night, and NCAA football. RFOM has gone stale, Ninja Gaiden -been there, done that, and they bitch or act surprised when they see XBox Live arcade and complain about that!
Luckily, 1 of them has a Wii and a 360, but the other is STUCK with the PS3 as he traded in the PS2 with ALL of his games to get the PS3.
Cold world..
iceman2cool_92 @ Aug 6th 2007 11:09AM
You could also just spend $30 more for an xbox360 Elite with a 120Gig HD and a huge line up of games ahead of it.
riggs @ Aug 6th 2007 11:13AM
or not.
iceman2cool_92 @ Aug 6th 2007 11:20AM
Why not ?
Zeus the God @ Aug 6th 2007 12:22PM
Because he's a dumbass, thats why not. He would rather spend his money (or parent's) on a 450-600 dollar door stop than a video game console.
lawlersauce @ Aug 6th 2007 1:41PM
Since when do we get a bunch of comments to a PS3 story of Xb0t fanboys saying how suck the PS3 is?
Oh that's right, all the time, cause they've got nothing to play on their console either.
Or is it the fact that their's is in for repair for the fifth time?
Sorry...Gears of War really isn't that fun, Halo 3 is the same thing as Halo 1 and 2 with more weapons and different maps, and your DLC for GTA4 makes me really jealous, especially because all that "DLC" is packed right in in the PS3 blu-ray version.
GunForHire @ Aug 6th 2007 11:14AM
Didn't some MS guy make an Allard-Croal style bet that Sony would be doing a 20GB PS3 within a couple months just a little while back? Guess someone owes that guy.
GunForHire @ Aug 6th 2007 11:15AM
Crap, I messed up what I was trying to say, now that doesn't make sense. Oh well.
john @ Aug 6th 2007 11:57AM
You're right, but the bet was as follows. The MS guy bet N'Gai that Sony would release a stripped down 40 GB PS3 with no backwards compatibility (not even software), for $399 before the end of the year.
I don't think this will happen, and the MS lackey made the bet knowing that. It seems like they are trying to build expectations for a lower price PS3, and when it doesn't happen, that's a PR win for MS.
john @ Aug 6th 2007 11:28AM
That's pretty much what I did. I have gamefly, so I rented Motorstorm and VF5. They were both OK (motorstorm was better), but they're on their way back now. There are a few good PSN games (Super Stardust and Tekken 5). But for the most part I've been cruising the used PS2 sections whenever I'm near a game store. So now I have been playing through a wealth of great PS2 games that I never experienced. FF XI and MGS 3 for now. Shadow of the Colossus and Katamari are on deck.
James @ Aug 6th 2007 11:32AM
You know I'd expect the writers at a gaming blog to know that the 60 gig gets you wifi as well and it's not just a $50 for 40 gigs of hard drive space deal.
FM @ Aug 6th 2007 11:30AM
In some Sony Style stores they're selling the 20gb at $399. It's not available online though.
Ska Oreo @ Aug 6th 2007 11:40AM
Looks like GS is trying to get rid of the remaining 20gb they have in stock.
doubtful @ Aug 6th 2007 11:41AM
The 20 GB is not eligible for the five free blu-ray movies, either, so I'd pass.
bl13 @ Aug 6th 2007 12:01PM
If you download the rebate form at www.bluraysavings.com, it doesn't say anything about the 20G model being ineligible.
doubtful @ Aug 6th 2007 12:48PM
Thanks bl13, I misremembered. I distinctly thought the form I had only listed the 60GB but I can't check since that's long been in the mail.
Plaid Ninja @ Aug 6th 2007 11:48AM
Isn't this version missing HDMI and the card readers?
bl13 @ Aug 6th 2007 11:59AM
It has HDMI, but no card readers or wi-fi.
Lord Chako @ Aug 6th 2007 3:39PM
HDMI, no.
Card readers, yes.
dsub @ Aug 6th 2007 1:39PM
They sell refurbished 20GB PS3's for $360. That's what I've been trying to find.
MewMewtwo45 @ Aug 6th 2007 1:44PM
Uh. For a better deal, actually go to a GS store. These are apparently new systems, but refurbished systems from our warehouse are $369.99, whereas the 60 GB are $449.99. In most cases, the only reason it was sent to the warehouse anyway instead of being sold outright as "Used" is because the warehouse has to wipe the hard drive.
Andy @ Aug 9th 2007 6:09AM
At the GameStop where I work, we have refurbed 60 gig PS3s for that ammount. The 20 gigs are $370. Less than a 360 with the same hard drive space. Though, to be fair, the 360 is the better console.
silks @ Aug 6th 2007 2:07PM
Resistance: Fall of Man is worth buying a PS3 for. That game is amazing all-around, but it got lost in the shuffle because everybody was too busy touching themselves to Gears of War last Christmas. Resistance online is way more fun than Gears online as far as I'm concerned. It's faster-paced and more like a PC-style FPS.
Evan @ Aug 6th 2007 3:08PM
The 20GB is the better deal if you are buying a PS3 to play games.
The 60GB/80GB is the better deal if you are buying a PS3 to download videos, watch BluRay movies (5 free movies), view photos from your camera (card reader slots), use the rumored DVR addon, etc.
You have to ask yourself: are you buying a game console to play games, or are you buying a game console as a half-assed home-theater PC?
Curmeo @ Aug 6th 2007 3:15PM
a killer deal for people who dont need wifi. lets face it, the card readers arent really important or significant.
Jeff @ Aug 6th 2007 3:27PM
"The 20GB is the better deal if you are buying a PS3 to play games."
Spoken like someone who *actually* knows what he's talking about.
Unfortunately, appearances can be deceiving.
Ever hear about a little thing called the "PlayStation Store"? Lots of downloadable games there. Most of the demos alone approach 1GB in size. I've had my PS3 for a month and if I have the 20GB model, I'd have a full hard drive already having downloaded just a small number of game demos. That's not even counting the full games that are available there.
Are you a PC gamer? Look at your hard drive and see how much of it's devoted to games. The PS3 installs portions of its games on the hard drive just like PC's do.
Here's the deal. Unlike the 360, PS3 games are built with the expectation that a hard drive exists in the system. The PlayStation Store was similarly built knowing every PS3 owner has a hard drive. Every game on the system assumes you have a hard drive. So to say the size of the drive doesn't matter if you just want to play games is ridiculous. Go out and buy a 20GB drive for your gaming PC then. See how much fun you have constantly installing and uninstalling stuff to make room.
As far as I'm concerned, 60GB isn't even enough. And all I do is play games. It would be different if the whole system and all the games available for it weren't designed for a hard drive, but they were.
Diceburna @ Aug 6th 2007 9:01PM
I bought a 20gb ps3 in Dec and I still got alot of space on my hdd...If I ever needed to make space all I got to do is delete the old movie trailers, demos, and games that I dont touch anymore.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Aug 7th 2007 6:58AM
My broadband is pretty damn fast, and I wouldn't download a 1GB demo. That's just ridiculous.
Doesn't anyone know how to make things small these days?
ForceUnleashed @ Aug 6th 2007 3:40PM
Or you could get a 360 Elite for 30 dollars more...
120G Hard Drive, nice black finish, better controller, better online system.
Personal opinion though.
However looking at the benefits I think the average consumer would see its a better deal. 100G more of memory for just $30.00 more?
Myke @ Aug 7th 2007 10:55AM
Whats the point going to the "Elite" if its not going to last?.. Sending it M$ back and forth for 3 years would annoy me!
I think the 20GB should be $350 or $400... It would be in great competition with the M$ Pro. Thats my opinion!
