August is a painful month for gamers

According to an MTV Multiplayer Blog post, August is the most painful month to be a gamer. Historically speaking, that is. For starters, two megaton Legend of Zelda games were apparently delayed in the month of August: Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. Lair was recently pushed back a few weeks, and if your memory is sharp, you'll recall GTA 4 has been delayed until sometime next year. All in August (or nearly in August, as the blog is careful to say).

Paranoia, or is our collective gamers' horoscope destined to bring us pain every year? At least we have Metroid Prime 3: Corruption to shine a bit of brightness on the gloomy August doom parade.

Yeah this August is definitely an exception. There are so many dope games coming out. And for some reason I'm totally stoked for online Madden with the Wii.

Warhawk will save August for me. I still can't decide which version to get though. PSN version is cheaper and is stored on the hard drive so you don't have to fool around with discs, Retail version includes a headset and I like having the box and game disc.

Uh... How about Persona 3?

And if you want multiplayer, MTV, try Luminous Arc, which offers local and wi-fi multiplayer.

Someone didn't check the releases for the month before writing their article.

Prime 3 has weeks of my life planned out already. Bioshock... um.. will... have to wait?

It seems more people are looking forward to prime 3 than Bioshock. People vote your comment up and the other one down. Also Metroid Prime rules and shamefully I just buoght Metroid Prime 1 today and don't have the 2nd. I plan to get 3 on launch though.

looks like bioshock is top of this list. far more innovative than MP3, and being built by ex system shock 2 guys. Who can resist that? firm candidate for GOTY.

Yay for ANOTHER Final Fantasy... except for the 360. God, the demo was so boring.

Yeah, I wasn't really feeling the demo on that one.

However, to Ignatius, I tend to enjoy Final Fantasies, and this just did not really appeal to me.

Admittedly, it's probably just because of Toriyama's art direction. Cannot take it.

But yeah, August has been pretty much about BioShock for me.

Hell, the majority of the last decade has been about BioShock.

painful? It gives me a month to actually FINISH some games.

Not painful at all for me. Finally buckled down to save and buy a ps3 (in 2 days) and catch up on stuff I've put off forever/try new things.

There's virtually no way that Metroid will be a better game than Bioshock. I don't want to incite anything, here - Super and Prime are two of my favorite games, ever, but Retro's in over their heads. Echoes was horribly muddled by the fact that they suddenly found themselves pitched against Halo 2 and ran with it; Corruption may yet have a better sense of itself as a FPS, but that doesn't change the fact that Nintendo's time of narrative innovation is long past. While they still maintain a very high standard of quality, whatever they're trying to do with the medium, "player-dependent experience" is a far cry from "Face Training."

Not that both don't have their place!

Neither game is out yet. How do you know which one will be better?

Personally, I'm looking forward to both.

It wasn't exactly their fault that they tried to outshine Halo 2 (just bad luck), the only mistake they made was getting Retro to tack on multiplayer in some last-ditch effort to somehow counter LIVE online multiplayer

Neither title having been released, i'd say BioShock will have a more engaging story, but that Metroid Prime 3 will control better and be a little more well-rounded

Get Bioshock for PC! It'll be better (well... if you pc can run it)

MP2 was good, but it would have been great without two things...
1) Prolonged key hunt near the end of the game
2) BEAM AMMO

MP3 can only be better than 2 (I hope)

I agree with Moofree. Beam ammo was about the lamest idea ever. It made me hesitate to use those weapons, and in general just reduced the fun-osity of the concept of light vs dark weapons.

Yeah I'm def. getting bioshock/warhawk and if I can afford it, prime 3 as well. bioshock won't be on my pc though, my pc is great for fear/valve games/stalker/doom 3, but probably not bioshock sigh. looks like all platforms in my house (360,wii,ps3,pc) will be getting some love yay

every platform's getting something great this month. And Augusts past have been good for gamers too, didn't GBA premier in August 2001?

This August looks pretty sweet with Prime and Bioshock both looking stellar. Some other very good games as well.

Bah. MTV proving their knowledge of the games industry once again. "They announced GTA IV got delayed this month! This is the worst month everrrr!!"

August is just the start of when it gets good. January, June, and July are the worst months because games don't get released during them.

Whoa there, Joystiq. I do believe I wrote the post about August in relation to the GTA 4 delay. In fact, I believe I wrote that August is now the month that, in three different years, the potential biggest game of the fall was hit with a crushing, knock-it-into-next-year delay.

I did not say that August was a bad month for actual gaming. And I certainly wouldn't say that this year with BioShock and Metroid Prime 3 coming out.

You may question what I know about music. But games? I know games.

I bet Mario Galaxy gets a delay.

Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Dynasty Warriors Gundam, Rune Factory, Luminious Arc, Metroid Prime 3, Persona 3, Two Worlds, Strangehold...

I'm sorry, Did you name DW:G as a good game? That's almost as criminal as calling MP3 as the only big game of the month.

I have low expectations for MP3, seeing as I got bored playing the last 2.... way too much back tracking. But shoot, Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Joanne D'Arc.... And Saint's Row came out last year. Aug is hardly the Worst month.. Oh, and you can't forget Madden 08, the best selling game every year. It'ss also the start of major holiday season.

I'd say July or June is worse. It's right after E3 where we know about all the kick ass games, and know we can't get our hands on em for months.

Yeah-- I might have to finally drop money for a 360 for BioShock and I know Warhawk is gonna drain all my time-- the Beta sure did.

While I guess we have had some bad days in this particular month, but i don't see it happening this time. Metroid will own me.

Plus it's real hot.

I know MP3 will be good but not great (like MP1 and 2) Bioshock could very well push the indutry back to creative gaming...altho I doubt it,at the very least I pin my FPS hopes that bioshock will be awesome.

I still have not broke my boyycott to buy it from EB/GS.

Before I get Metroid, i'd have to get my hands on Strikers.....

Bioshock is a inner circle game. Meaning it does not have brand weight. Not to mention while it does some unique things with the AI and setting...what does it have? We have never played the game so we have no idea if the game has a good story or it will turn out a clunker like FEAR. Not to mention, RPG Mana throwing lighting out of your arms? Lifting objects? Shooting things? Gee, I have never seen that in a video game before...

I am sure that Madden on all systems will carry most of the weight this month, with Metroid carrying the remainder due to how many Wii owners, Metroid Fans, and the general hype for the game.

I also love how everyone judges Prime 3 from the past two games. If you have keeped updated, its radically different from the past primes. I have played it myself, it has Metroid Puzzle Solving with Halo/Half-Life Action Scenes. In your theories, nobody should have bought RE4 because all the other RE games were crap before it came out.

As long as I have Bioshock, August will be a great month.

I vote we draw & quarter the author of this blurb for mentioning MP3 instead of Bioshock.
