Pokemon trading figure game due next month
You have to feel for the youth of America. It's bad enough that they have to attempt to resist the siren song of Pokemon video games, cartoons and trading cards, now the poor bastards will have to contend with the Pokemon Trading Figure Game, coming to America on Sept. 19. In our opinion, this has gone far enough. Scientifically, kids are helpless against the power of Pokemon. There isn't a 9-year-old alive who wouldn't straight up murder an extended family member just to ride on Pikacku's back for a few minutes. Now, the cards and digital images that they swoon for have manifested a physical form! How are they supposed to resist that, for crying out loud? It would be like if heroin started recording your favorite TV shows and cooking dinner for you! Parents, get ready for money to start disappearing from your billfold in $9.99 dollar increments for 3-figure booster packs. That is, after the initial $14.99 for the starter pack. Yeah, it's pricey, but don't go blaming your kids. They have a disease.

Pokemon has some serious staying power.
Over ten years since inception and it seems bigger than ever.
I managed a movie theater when the 1st came out and we had special promo cards to give out. The kids were rabid. 8 year olds were calling on the phone about them. Its crazy.

I can attest that the quality of the figures and bases to be of very high quality. Far exceeding what a collector or player would find in the world of HeroClix.
Covarr @ Aug 6th 2007 1:15PM
The Yu-Gi-Oh! DungeonDice Monsters game could have been successful, but the figures were just too expensive. I expect the Pokémon Trading Figure Game will have the same problem. I'd rather pay $3 for 10 extra cards than $10 for 3 extra figures.
BPM @ Aug 6th 2007 7:35PM
Seconded. TCG > TFG
Covarr @ Aug 6th 2007 8:01PM
I don't doubt that the TFG will be fun and deep, I just doubt that an average 10 year old will be able to afford such an expensive investment, when compared to the much cheaper TCG.

Pokemon was well after my time but I still kinda dig this little toy trading figure thing. My daughter would love it.

brilliant idea. reminds me of some of the stupid crap i bought as a kid, when in retrospect, i would have been happier spending all that change on ninja turtles action figures.
Jouten @ Aug 6th 2007 1:21PM
This isn't just for kids anymore. There are some of us 'adults' who are also afflicted to this disease. As for me? Maybe not so much as far collecting dolls and cards, but the games are very fun and addictive. I love leveling Pokemons and evolving them! =D
Jouten @ Aug 6th 2007 1:22PM
Correction, 'by' this disease, not 'to' =D
Zertoss @ Aug 6th 2007 1:25PM
*sigh* I remember the days playing with my action figures. I used to have my Ninja Turtles fight my Transformers with an audience composed of army men and Lego people.
Rainy days were a blast, but if the sun was shining, I was outside running around like an idiot. Those were the good ol' days.
If I were 15 years younger, I'd probably get caught up in this trading figure thing too.
Anam @ Aug 6th 2007 1:30PM
Normally, I would say that trading figures are a better deal than trading cards. Sure, you can actually play a game with the cards, but only while the trading card game is still in style.
15 years after I was purchasing TMNT stuff as a kid, the action figures feel nostalgic, while the cards and other stuff I got just seem stupid and pointless today. I imagine the same will be true of the Pokemon stuff.
Anam @ Aug 6th 2007 1:44PM
Oh, apparently it's a game too. I should really learn to read.
Jeff @ Aug 6th 2007 1:34PM
I'm proud of myself. I've managed to keep myself from buying a DS; I have an overwhelming to buy it, pokemon diamond, and beat it in as few sittings as possible.
I'm not a fan of any other handheld game, so it'd be just for pokemon. Learning that the wireless play was all nerfed made it easier to pass it up.
Afflicted @ Aug 6th 2007 11:05PM
Alas, I am 17 years old and was not able to resist:
1 Onyx Colored DS, Pokemon Diamond, 8 Gym Badges and a defeated Elite 4 later, and I feel cold... but wanting more....
CJC @ Aug 6th 2007 1:39PM
My figures, let me show you them.
Orange Soda @ Aug 6th 2007 1:42PM
The trading figure game looks interesting, and I'm going to give it a shot. Sure, that whole spinning mechanic throws a crap-ton of luck into the mix, but from watching the (unfortunately non-interactive) how-to-play demo on go-pokemon.com, there is definitely a level of strategy in there, too.
And regardless of how fun the game ends up being, those figures are freaking awesome.
3cubed minus 3squared plus1 @ Aug 6th 2007 1:54PM
WTF?
Is Pikachu masturbating?
Ashley Boyd @ Aug 6th 2007 4:17PM
I think you're being a tad overly dramatic. We've been selling them at work (Game) in the UK for a while now and they've not been too popular as they are kind crap.
Jouten @ Aug 6th 2007 6:14PM
How dare you think for yourself and form your own opinion! You need us to tell you what to like and love and play! =P

"I think you're being a tad overly dramatic. We've been selling them at work (Game) in the UK for a while now and they've not been too popular as they are kind crap."
Thats because they are uber expensive for what they are- 2 for ~£8, randomized, and NO BASES INCLUDED!!
If GAME got off their high horse with prices.. then they'll be alot more popular!
poke50uk @ Aug 7th 2007 6:24AM
These have been out in the UK for ages... and have been phased out.. at £8.99 ($18) for just 2 randomised figers.. without the bases which are REQUIRED to play the game, they are a bloody rip off.. though as a pokemon fan I still got a load.. but I always seem to get duplicates.. all I want is an Absol and Syther :(
JBCheese @ Aug 7th 2007 12:04AM
God i wish i was in middle school again *fawn*
shMerker @ Aug 8th 2007 10:24AM
that 3 for 10 vs. 10 for 3 business doesn't really put the figures at a huge disadvantage to the cards. consider that a complete deck takes at least $21 worth of cards, and that that will probably be a total smorgasbord with no possibilities for real deckbuilding. Also consider that one pack of figures represents half of a full roster. If the teambuilding rules aren't too restrictive I could see getting started for 25-30 dollars. That's about what I initially spent on the cards back when they came in packs of 11, not the 9 that they do now.
Wait a minute, did I just write a post with serious thought about the financial implications of playing this game? Obviously the Idachu that resides in my subconcious is still alive and well and telling me that I must catch them all.
Tay @ Sep 19th 2007 5:20PM
I want to give them a shot but I can't find them! I actually think the cards are a bit over priced I mean $5 for 9 paper cards is a bit much!
