Sony denies the rumble Sixaxis, admits upgrades
Sony is denying recent reports that rumble Sixaxis' are ready to shake things up for consumers. Sony spokesman Dave Karraker tells GamePro that they have not added rumble to the Sixaxis and have no announcements regarding the feature. Although, if we're going to get technical with the word play, we know that Sony hasn't added rumble to the Sixaxis yet ('cause we don't have them) and, as for the future, they have no announcement at this time. They didn't actually deny the reports that developers have Sixaxis' with the rumble feature though, but of course, that's if we're getting technical. At this point, in all fairness, the rumble Sixaxis is merely rumor and speculation.
What Karraker did say is that the motion sensing abilities of the Sixaxis have been enhanced and developers are currently working with those. He says, "We recently sent out to the development community some new prototypes that have a slightly enhanced sensitivity for the analog sticks and the motion sensing within the Sixaxis controller ... This is not a new controller, but is part of the normal development and evolution of controllers." This follows along with statements already made by Kaz Hirai that the Sixaxis will continue to evolve and we should expect more iterations in the future.

When will Sony start not admitting to developing a two-handed controller with rumble?
PSN: ummfada @ Aug 6th 2007 11:34AM
(GEICO CAVEMAN VOICE) Uh, What?
PSN: ummfada @ Aug 6th 2007 11:29AM
I will be adding drool to my avatar 'cause of the news!

RoboChamp @ Aug 6th 2007 11:30AM
Seems kind of silly to deny Rumble at this point.
indianajones @ Aug 6th 2007 11:41AM
I agree. Seems kinda silly.
whosmav @ Aug 6th 2007 11:31AM
Sony is being really stupid about this. EVERYONE, gamers and devs have spoke out in favor of rumble. Its a no brainer.
More iterations huh?
Will a final PS3 ever come out?
www.gamernewz.net
vidGuy @ Aug 6th 2007 11:35AM
Eventually. If Sony has their way they'll release the final PS3 in 2017 for the low price of $599 (hey, inflation has to reduce that a little, right?).
bak8807 @ Aug 6th 2007 12:49PM
I didn't know you were allowed to advertise in the comment section as long as you posted an actual comment. I think I'll get on that.
indianajones @ Aug 6th 2007 11:34AM
I am already drooling!
Stupidiot @ Aug 6th 2007 11:34AM
In my opinion, SIXAXIS needs more than just rumble to make it a good controller. The shape of the Dualshock controller has put me off ever since I held a Xbox control pad.
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Aug 6th 2007 11:57AM
Exactly the 360 controller is the best controller I have ever used. Perfect design. When will Sony stop recycling that same POS1 controller. Haha!!
riggs @ Aug 6th 2007 2:42PM
when people stop praising it. *rolls eyes*
3cubed minus 3squared plus1 @ Aug 6th 2007 1:44PM
Yes the 360 controller is comfortable and so was the Cubes for me. The PS's always seemed awkward, like the analogs were in the wrong places.
borland502 @ Aug 6th 2007 1:58PM
Indeed you are right sir! Now if only MS had the guts to make a design a better control scheme for FPS & RTS games. At that point, I might not need the computer to "help" me aim so much.
Farseer @ Aug 6th 2007 2:27PM
I third that comment. Before they added analog sticks, the PS controller was not bad. As soon as they added dual analogs without changing the form factor, though, its usability level dropped significantly.
Microsoft was exactly the opposite, though. The original XBOX controller was huge and unwieldy. The S-type controller, on the other hand was a great improvement. The 360 controller is even better.
Sony really needs to look into a new form factor. One that doesn't promote hand cramping.
WhatIsThatThing @ Aug 6th 2007 2:47PM
The general Playstation controller is just a SNES controller with analog sticks and extra shoulder buttons. Oh, and motion sensing now. I mean, look at them! The Playstation might have the one-up when it comes to graphics and processing power, but their controller is still about 3 generations old.
Kye @ Aug 6th 2007 3:55PM
I actually didnt know the thumb sticks on the dual shock were thumb sticks for 1-2 years!
I thought they had something to do with the rumble.
Sircolby45 @ Aug 6th 2007 5:01PM
Couldn't agree more. The dual-shock is the #1 reason I do not like Playstation. I didn't like it on my PS1, PS2, and I still don't like it on the dam PS3!!!

Stupidiot @ Aug 6th 2007 11:37AM
I think I just solved this! Sony's developing an external rumble pack, a la N64 :p
Jake @ Aug 6th 2007 2:11PM
That would be the ultimate irony. Sony calls rumble last gen, then adds it to their system as a controller pack the same way it was done by Nintendo two gens ago. Hilarity would surely ensue.
And yes, I have really fallen in love with the 360 controller. I absolutely can't stand the PS3 controller with its goofy analog placement, pseudo-trigger/shoulder button BS, zero weight, and just all around awkwardness.
I do admit though that the annoyance would not exist if I'd been playing PS2 for the last year instead of 360. I game my PS2 away (to my dad partly so I can game when visiting) when I got a 360.
Steve @ Aug 6th 2007 11:40AM
Sony's so cagey about announcing rumble because they spent a goodly bit of time shitting all over it when they couldn't have it. It adds nothing, it's so last gen, blah, blah, blah. More bullshit, but hell, why should they change now?
James @ Aug 6th 2007 11:42AM
I hope they add concave triggers too. The ruddy controller is horrendous.
carlity @ Aug 6th 2007 11:42AM
Why does sony always deny everything? I would imagine part of the problem is that all those pr and spokes people don't actually have a clue of whats going on inside of Sony and so the policy is if you don't know, just deny it all.
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 6th 2007 11:43AM
I'll still be picking one up come november-time. I was hoping for a rumble sixaxis before buying a ps3, but oh well.
Karen @ Aug 6th 2007 11:48AM
The more a PR person denies something the more I think Rumble controler is being devolped. I just hope they make it more ergonomic.
A big thank you to Sony that last week I finally was able to buy a extra silver PS2 controler for my silver PS2 in Canada. I was beginning to think I'd have to import one.
Drunkard @ Aug 6th 2007 11:58AM
Sixaxis won't have rumble, but a new type of PS3 controller will, they just can't give it the same name otherwise it will be a misleading product.
No one likes getiing ripped off.
Mike @ Aug 6th 2007 11:57AM
They are denying rumble because they want people to buy the machine now, not wait until they include rumble. Too bad Sony is not getting my money until they have rumble...and a good exclusive game.
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Aug 6th 2007 12:00PM
Too bad Sony isnt getting my money until they launch a real "game" machine. There are no system sellers on that thing. Sorry =( lol
whosmav @ Aug 6th 2007 12:01PM
True dat!
Phranctoast @ Aug 6th 2007 12:05PM
Nice and pointless. Very good.
I couldnt care less about rumble. I never noticed a benfit to having it. Dont use motion control either.
FermitTheKrog @ Aug 6th 2007 9:43PM
I would have liked to have tried the boomerang controller. I can say whether it sucked or not since Sony did not even give it a chance.
Word of the street. @ Aug 6th 2007 12:17PM
They denied the PSP Lite as well and we all know how that turn out.
Face it Sony you suck at holding your secrets secret.
WiNG @ Aug 6th 2007 12:21PM
Sony does not want to admit this because it is basically admitting "Hey, anyone out there who bought like 7 controllers, you are an idiot, please rebuy them"
Just like nobody wants to preannounce price drops. It will negatively affect current sales.
Bluebrake @ Aug 6th 2007 2:02PM
To be fair, anyone who bought 7 controllers when no games support them all probably is an idiot.
john @ Aug 6th 2007 12:27PM
The time has come for a Dual Shock controller that actually administers electric shocks during gameplay.
baby sea tuna @ Aug 6th 2007 12:50PM
It's been done.

Digi Smalls @ Aug 6th 2007 12:58PM

"can even the staunchest PS3 fanboy claim the Sixaxis is a successful controller?"
vidGuy @ Aug 6th 2007 1:04PM
Yes, yes they can. They go the whole - "if it's not broke..." route. Well guess what? It IS broke, now fix it god damn it!
Ngamer @ Aug 6th 2007 1:13PM
Sony should just bring back the boomerang controllers.
bm @ Aug 6th 2007 1:30PM
I find that in games where quick reactions are needed, rumble adds a whole new sense to the game - when playing with it turned off, I find myself dying a lot more often because the feedback just isn't there. We humans have our touch sense for a reason, any controller that fails to utilize it is just "last-gen" to me. Well, I guess it fits perfectly with something that's still the same modified SNES controller from the PS1 days.
samfish @ Aug 6th 2007 1:41PM
I don't really care much for rumble. I've always used wireless controllers because I've been spoiled on that for years...and they typically either don't support rumble or eat batteries like a fat chick binging on chocolate.
I did like in RE4 on the Wii, though, where the controller would kinda thump when you aimed at an enemy. Aside from that, though, I'm really hard pressed to think of any examples of Rumble that I felt I couldn't live without.
That said....BRING ON THE PS3mote, Sony. You *KNOW* you're thinking about it...
vidGuy @ Aug 6th 2007 1:46PM
Most baseball games rumble when you are aiming a pitch outside of the strike zone. It's an absolutely must for that, otherwise I agree that most applications are just improvements rather than necessary elements. It's still noticeable to be without rumble in a game I've grown used to having it, though.
Anam @ Aug 6th 2007 1:48PM
Yeah, I remember how cool rumble was originally, but then I got used to it and don't even notice it now.
If rumble makes the batteries last for shorter durations, it ain't worth it.
Pumapayam @ Aug 6th 2007 2:25PM
Usually a denial from them is the truth. They just want to keep it a surprise.
