Waverace 64, Lolo, Galaga 90 now on Virtual Console
With the top new retail release and a really solid lineup on Virtual Console, we think you have to give the win to the Wii this week. We're not sure of the new XBLA or PSN releases, but we bet they'll have a hard time topping these selections.
Wave Race 64 (Nintendo 64, 1-2 players, 1,000 Wii Points): Back in the day (as the kids say) we loved, loved, loved Wave Race 64, almost to the point that we're a little nervous about seeing how it's held up in the decade since its release. We hope we're not paying a sawbuck to have our childhood kicked in the crotch.
Adventures of Lolo (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): This is another one we have fond memories of, and we're a little less worried about how it's fared. After all, a solid puzzle game is enjoyable forever, ask Alexey Pajitnov. If it's undone by anything, it'll be the music, an endless loop, driving players ever closer to the dark edge of madness.
Galaga 90 (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): You know what it's a lot like? Galaga.
Look for these new releases after 12 p.m., EST.

I was just thinking about how awesome it would be if they reworked Waverace to use the Wii remote...then I got sad.
Then again, I just saved myself ten bucks.
Radicoon @ Aug 6th 2007 10:08AM
So was the GameCube version of Wave Race that bad? Doesn't it basically include the entire N64 game? You can find it cheaper than the VC game =/
samfish @ Aug 6th 2007 10:14AM
"If it's undone by anything, it'll be the music, an endless loop, driving players ever closer to the dark edge of madness."
If I can play Bust-A-Move on the Wii for 2 straight hours, I can jolly damn well sit through Adventures of Lolo!
Awesome game, it is.
RoboChamp @ Aug 6th 2007 10:14AM
I think I speak for everyone when I say, where the **** is Megaman 64.
....
Wait, that was a crappy port. Wave Race is fine.
samfish @ Aug 6th 2007 10:15AM
I think *I* speak for everyone when I say, "Where the FUCK is Mischief Makers?!"
Now that Mario 2 is out, that game has become my #1 most wanted.
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 6th 2007 10:18AM
I think _I_ speak for everyone when I say Where the fuck is Bubble Bobble NES?
Anam @ Aug 6th 2007 11:01AM
I think *I* speak for everyone when I say "where the fuck is Star Fox, Super Mario RPG, Breath of Fire 1 & 2, Dragon Warrior (Quest) 1 & 2, Mortal Kombat and especially Chrono Trigger?"
Anam @ Aug 6th 2007 11:04AM
...and Illusion of Gaia
BPM @ Aug 6th 2007 11:23AM
All good requests.
And MegaMan 64 wasn't a crappy port, aside from the audio quality (but, hey, at least they were able to squeeze all of the voice acting into the game!).
But, the game was build for the PlayStation controller, so it works best on that.
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 6th 2007 11:24AM
you do speak for me, thats for sure. Especially with that Illusion of Gaia comment (even though I already have a loose cartridge of that game, an opened copy of the game with the box, manual, and everything in ok shape, a factory sealed copy of the game, the tshirt, and a copy of the Nintendo Power with Illusion of Gaia on the cover, in mint condition, in a mylar bag)
I am an Illusion of Gaia whore.
Charron @ Aug 6th 2007 12:21PM
I think I speak for everyone here when I say where the fuck is Carmen Sandiego?
I've been looking all over for her.
samfish @ Aug 6th 2007 1:20PM
Count me in as another Illusion of Gaia slut, too. One of the most under appreciated games ever, I get the feeling.
3cubed minus 3squared plus1 @ Aug 6th 2007 1:35PM
Super Mario RPG is my most wanted right now, Next to a Wii. [I still don't have one]
Anam @ Aug 6th 2007 1:36PM
Good to see so many Illusion of Gaia fans. So few people know about that game that some days I wake up and think that I was just imagining it...
Kind of like Warhammer: Dark Omen on the PS1. I *really* wish I could find that game.
Mighty Shockwave @ Aug 6th 2007 1:38PM
Where in FUCKING HELL is Super Metroid?
J.Goodwin @ Aug 6th 2007 10:29AM
Galaga 90 is pretty much the pinnacle of Galaga.
Captain Jody, you might look forward to Rainbow Islands TG16, which is a Bubble Bobble sequel. Unfortunately, since it was published by Working Designs in the US (their first game ever), who knows what kind of legal limbo it's in now. I Cadash falls into that same category. Too bad, they're great titles.
ManekiNeko @ Aug 6th 2007 10:34AM
The Joystiq editors don't seem to have much love for Galaga '90. While I'll admit that the Turbografx-16 version isn't quite arcade perfect, it's close enough to be worthy of more than just a sentence-long dismissal!
I hope Nintendo chases it with the Genesis game Space Invaders '91. I've got that game on cartridge and thought it was one of the best retro revivals I've ever played.

haha, i swear, every modified mario avatar I see is better than the last
WiNG @ Aug 6th 2007 10:57AM
Could someone mod me up a Paper Sonic avatar?
Matters @ Aug 6th 2007 11:49AM
would if i could
Charron @ Aug 6th 2007 12:22PM
There isn't a Paper Sonic, but dammit there should be.
Crono @ Aug 6th 2007 10:58AM
I wouldn't say waverace is a must buy, but it was alot of fun, and the water effects were great at the time.
Jonathan Cashon @ Aug 6th 2007 11:03AM
Finally! They're starting to release N64 titles on a near regular basis. Too bad that I can get the better Gamecube versions of their N64 selections for $10.00 as well.
Seriously, they've given us Paper Mario (Thousand Year Door), Wave Race 64 (Blue Storm), Ocarina of Time (Twilight Princess) and F-Zero X (GX). In my opinion, the Gamecube versions of these games are better.
And if you want to look at it a certain way...the other three N64 games are also just technologically inferior versions of Gamecube games; Mario Kart 64 (Double Dash!!), Super Mario 64 (Sunshine) and Starfox 64 (Armada). Only thing is...with these three, the 64 versions are much better, so I can't complain.
I want Nintendo to give me some games that didn't come out on the Gamecube. How about some Duke Nukem: Zero Hour? Banjo-Kazooie? Body Harvest? Beetle Adventure Racing? Sin and Punishment? Jet Force Gemini? Shadow Man? Donkey Kong 64? Turok 1 or 2? Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA? Pilotwings 64? Goemon's Great Adventure?
When are they going to release games like these?
shivr @ Aug 6th 2007 11:27AM
ahahaha... body harvest... man that game was sooooo... difficult in its frustrating controls but awesome it its badness.
I could definatly go for some pilot wings though >_> or some majora's mask, to which there has yet to be a 'successor'
BPM @ Aug 6th 2007 11:28AM
Goemon's Great Adventure probably won't come to VC (neither will Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, for that matter), unless they fix some fundamental flaws with the VC emulator.
For whatever "brilliant" reason, Konami made both games REQUIRE the Controller Pak to save. You CANNOT save to the Game Pak at all!
And Virtual Console still doesn't emulate this (even though the homebrew Project64 can do everything a real N64 could, and then some!)...
Grant @ Aug 6th 2007 11:21AM
I fired up wave race when i was cleaning at the beginning of the summer and found the cart.
it's not a bad game... but it's not nearly as great as i remember, kinda a let down.
32_Footsteps @ Aug 6th 2007 11:09AM
Heh, I still remember becoming giddy when I figured out the pattern HAL used for the passwords in the first Lolo game. It was a bit lame that you could but it together to jump a whole bunch of levels, but at least it worked every time, unlike most passwords of that era.
Also, I remember Lolo for having a suicide button. It was a sweet preview for many days spent blowing up the title characters in Lemmings.
Finally, that was one heck of a magic spell Lolo packed. Just beat the final level and you'll know what I mean.
One thing I find funny - in all the calls for various rereleases, I haven't yet heard a single person call for the rerelease of River City Ransom. Talk about a game that'll get every single old-school NES fan to spend 500 Wii points... you know you all want to lay the smack down on the Squids and the Internationals again.
BPM @ Aug 6th 2007 11:29AM
Hellz yeah, River City Ransom. One of THE best games EVER.
I'd get the VC version just for the ease of not needing to hook up my NES (even though I got my NES copy for less than $5, $2.50!).
Karen @ Aug 6th 2007 11:09AM
I remember playing WaveRace 64 the Christmas 96, I was shocked at how good that game looked. I'll give it a download to try it out.
tenchi221 @ Aug 6th 2007 11:18AM
hey guys wats goin on in this thread
Zeus the God @ Aug 6th 2007 11:50AM
I still have this on N65...
J.Goodwin @ Aug 6th 2007 11:51AM
Banjo Kazooie is most likely never coming to VC. Look for it on XBLA, which is Microsoft's (IP owner) digital distribution service.
mr nimblewick @ Aug 6th 2007 12:03PM
Haven't heard of it. Tell me more.
J.Goodwin @ Aug 6th 2007 12:06PM
If you enjoy XBLA, you may also enjoy PS3's download service :D I understand that it has two or three games worth playing on it, and that pretty much everyone in Sony's internal studios is developing download games instead of actual retail products.
samfish @ Aug 6th 2007 1:28PM
As I understand it, it's never coming to XBLA, either. The rights are so jiggered between Nintendo, Rare and MS that we might never see the games released.
Which is a damn shame. The VC would be oh so much brighter with Battle Toads, Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooie and Jet Force Gemini.
Mighty Shockwave @ Aug 6th 2007 1:49PM
Hah! I still have the N64 cartridge. How could I through away such a masterpiece of a platformer? I play about once a year. Never losses the charm. It would rock though if it came to XBLA. The only thing that would make it better would be HD output and 16:9 widescreen. Leave the graphics alone though. Some of the charm is kept through the unique artstyle, and altering it may ruin the feel of the game.
J.Goodwin @ Aug 6th 2007 1:56PM
Of course Battletoads and Goldeneye are even more screwed up, rightswise. I think people are going to have to satisfy themselves with ebay and romz for those ones.
JFG would be great to get back in one form or another, but I don't think it did all that well the first time around. It's definitely way out there, even on Rare's scale of weirdness.
Luigi193 @ Aug 6th 2007 12:09PM
Hm...never played any of those...if you were to recommend me downloading one what one would that be???
O and we neeeeeed mario rpg.... but I am happy with paper mario!!!!!
Obie @ Aug 6th 2007 12:18PM
I love WaveRace64, now where is Super Metroid!?
THAT is a game I wanna re-live through! :)
Word of the street. @ Aug 6th 2007 12:20PM
OMG waverace I remember that game,it was cool but 1000p?.Seriously the VC is the most expensive service of em all.
I know is worth it but damn they should keep their prices 800p or below.
CJC @ Aug 6th 2007 12:20PM
Lolo, huh? Gonna have to get this.
bounchfx @ Aug 6th 2007 7:31PM
I would REALLY like Super Metroid to come because I never got a chance to play/beat it.
and River city ransom would rule too
and secret of mana 1 + 2
and so many more.. :(
Eric B @ Aug 6th 2007 1:43PM
BEETLE ADVENTURE RACING. NOW.
Then I can finally sell my N64

DG @ Aug 6th 2007 2:45PM
If you've never played Wave Race 64, it's FAR superior to Wave Race: Blue Storm. The N64 had none of the charm of the original and the water effects weren't nearly as spectacular the second time around.
Mr Khan @ Aug 6th 2007 4:09PM
I think i'll look into adventures of lolo
HAL labs is Nintendo's greatest asset, IMO. Of course, people could guess that that was my opinion by looking at my avatar.

Awesome... I want to unlock that dolphin mode again!
