The Zerg are still in the conceptual phases. We'll likely see them in a few months, before the end of the year.

yes us starcraft players hate when we get noobs on our teams. Because unlike a game like halo or something, no matter how good oyu are, your not gonna win a 3v1 (unless their super noobs).

Its a shame some1 like you, who barely played SC1 and cant remember the units got to play this game when some1 like me who still play SC to date, and loves the game so much does not :(. I suggest you do right amongst the fans, and raffle off the beta key you were givin instead of keeping it.

Nice article. Made me laugh. I like the way this guy writes. And so what if he didn't know much about Starcraft? At least he went and tried to cover the event for you guys, be thankful. And anyway the two videos he linked to make up for him not knowing much about Starcraft.

I'm so jealous. I wish I could have played it. I still play the first one. If only my comp was ready, I still got to get a better one. But if it comes out after This Christmas, which I'm sure it will, I will be ready.

A downloadable beta?? Sweet! Any idea when, Kevin?

WTF Joystiq? You send somebody who barely played SC1 to cover SC2? Not only did we get less coverage ("you can add things like Tech Labs to buildings, which upgrade the types of units they can produce" -- huh, that's good to know; let me write that down), it's already wounding to us that somebody gets to tinker with an alpha while we just get to read about it; you let a newb have the honor? It's like you sent a gay guy to cover an event at the Playboy mansion!

Actually, I'm straight. But just to add some salt to the wound.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/13/cgs-draft-and-joystiq-at-the-playboy-mansion/

I think my newbies view provides more coverage than the "less coverage" you cite. How would no coverage be better than "less coverage."

I'm going to have to reflect the sentiments of the other posters on here who are upset at Joystiq's choice of preview for Starcraft 2.

Honestly Mr. Kelly, you obviously had little to no appreciation for the magnitude of the first Starcraft since you admittedly paid little attention to it. To be frank, I don't know why anyone would heed any of your opinions regarding the sequel.

Okay, let's set the record straight here. I live in Los Angeles, about 35 miles from where BlizzCon was. I drove myself to BlizzCon, did not stay in a hotel, paid my own gas and food. Joystiq didn't send me to this event. I chose to cover it. If you want to read a hardcore StarCraft 1 player's opinion about the sequel, then I suggest you search the net for one. In fact, I'll do it for you, here you go:

http://www.starcraftpro.com/news/game-news/starcraftpro.com-hands%11on!-starcraft-ii-at-blizzcon/

There you go, I hope that sates you.

In the meantime, had you chosen to read my entire review, you'd know that I really enjoyed playing the game, to the tune of three hours worth of figuring things out. I'm sure there are people out there who didn't obsess over StarCraft that will hopefully read my review and want to play it as well.

Stop ragging on the guy. Unless Joystiq had another blogger they could have sent to BlizzCon don't blame the noob too much. It's also Joystiq's failure.

Lemme tell ya ever since the first game play release I was excited even though I never really got to experience the earlier installment to its fullest.

Okay, guys, yeah it's bad luck that the newbie played the game, but seriously. Starcraft 2 will come out eventually, so stop your whining. Just look forward to the fact that us vets will do way more Bnet pwnage than the new players will. :)

It all evens out, really.

Wow, I can't believe people are whining so much about this. I thought it was good that he never played the original very much. I can go read hardcore StarCraft fans impressions of the game all over the place, but it's nice to hear what someone who doesn't have the high expectations brought on by playing the original has to say.

You guys need to start banning people from commenting, like Kotaku does. It's really a lot more pleasant to read comments over there because the people who make annoying or worthless comments are gone.

hey I liked the review (preview?), I play SC and know all the units but I am by no means 'hardcore' at it, and reading a review by a 'hardocre' SC player would have been annoying as hell. This article was more refreshing, giving a more objective take on the game instead of fanboy gushing.

Hell, the fact that he liked it enought that hes going back to replay SC because of playing SCII is a pretty good sign, yeah?

I think it's GOOD that a player who wasn't very active with Starcraft 1 played for Joystiq. You can go to nearly any other gaming site that attended Blizzcon and they have reviews that sound similar from what appear to be seasoned players. This particular review is unique in that it shows us that players who didn't get hooked on number one can STILL enjoy Starcraft 2. It's GOOD news, people. GOOD news.

Though, I am very jealous, as well.

Im surprised they haven't ruined this game by making it a fsp or some crap, to appeal to the "hardcore" gamer with their 733t skills...shame on you Blizzard.

Here's a decent review of the game.

http://www.battlereports.com/viewreports.php?reportnum=6332

Kevin, glad you reconsidered the original SC and are getting back into it. It's truly an amazing game and one worth getting proficient in. There's no doubt you and your cohorts will be hearing more and more about this game in the next year or two, and when it actually comes out it'll probably be one of the highest traffic items of your site.

I'm certain SC2 will have astronomical effects on the gaming industry.

It is good he's not a total pro. A lot of the "pro" reviews say things like "IT IS TOO EASY TO MiCRO" or "ITS TOO INTUITIVE HOW TO BUILD A BASE"

haha that just means the entry bar is lower, not that the gosu micro gods still won't pwn everyone. It just means the first time Jenny Protoss plays she will know whats going on, and not be asking where her opponent is while getting a "I'm in ur base, killin ur doodz" reply

Kevin, if you stand by your lack of experience, yet seemingly merit to preview the game for the readers of joystiq, I wouldn't expect you to be so touchy on the subject. The fact is, as a blogger/journalist, you should do some damn background research before you cover an event, and in the videogame journalism realm, that means playing the franchises you will be previewing. Just like we wouldn't want to read a movie review from someone who'd never seen a film before, it's pointless to preview a videogame from a series you're unfimiliar with. Place the blame on joystiq, but don't whine when people are all "wtf?" on you.

Why is it that so many self proclaimed "hardcore" gamers have to act like jerks? Is being an ass to others a prerequisite to be "hardcore?"

Thank you Kevin for the nice preview of the game. And it's nice to see that the new Starcraft II will appeal to both new and old timers.

SC2 is looking great, can't wait for this to come out.

People need to get off the author's back, this is all way before even a beta, so it's not like some in-depth comparison of power between the Toss and Terran units would be accurate by the time this comes out. Not to mention the zerg have only been glimpsed on the outskirts of the demos so far (and perhaps the Xel'Naga will appear? always a possibility) so there will be more chances for this kind of analysis to be made.

The videos are all we really need at this point, for anyone who has played SC1 extensively, the visual experience; the way the game looks and feels is a huge part of what made the original such a lasting force in the RTS genre.

It's also nice to see some new innovation (vikings!) even if it is too early to really judge how these units will eventually be balanced out.

The nit-picky questions I might have are things like, "Do Ghosts still do plasma damage? Are damage types even in use?" and while it would be nice to have that kind of thing answered for the current build, if you didn't take the time and money to go to blizzcon, you're stuck hoping that someone was there who cared about that information and will post it. There's no reason to jump all over the people who ARE posting what they learned.
