New update prepares Xbox 360s for wireless guitars
The new system update for the Xbox 360 could best be thought of as an opening act: While not particularly exciting on its own, it is getting you ready to rock. According to Xbox spokesman Major Nelson, the only thing that the update is doing is preparing systems for wireless guitar controllers (the kind used by Rock Band and Guitar Hero III), saying the regular update that adds features is still coming later this year. For some (at least one of Team Joystiq included) the update has also had the interesting side effect of turning off your system's ability to sense that there's a disc in the tray, at least until you open and close it. It doesn't appear to be a huge problem, we just didn't want you to panic.

My Xbox lost it's sense of disc during the last update in the Spring. I kinda feel bad for it now.
Avaloner @ Aug 7th 2007 9:42AM
Mine too! It has trouble reading game DVDs and all this since the Spring Update. Think its a widespread problem? More importantly, think MS will do anything about it?
Jake @ Aug 7th 2007 8:20AM
I am irritated that these guitars weren't available when GHII first launched.
benjamin @ Aug 7th 2007 8:25AM
I won't be updating, and I'm certain many others won't either. Given the myriad reports of systemic 360 failure post-update, is it really any wonder? This is doubly true now that the public has been made aware of how the 360 implements IBM's proprietary eFuse technology.
Additionally, how is it that a single company can elicit an update to console's firmware? Have we ever heard about any other company managing to coax Microsoft into making their software and hardware more compatible? Of course not. The whole situation reeks of back-room dealings and collusion, something I'm certain that the FTC would love to hear more about.
You can be certain that I, for one, will be barring my 360 console from accessing the network until time passes and I can find positive confirmation of the update having widespread success.

What size is your tinfoil hat? I need a new one.
ymmv @ Aug 7th 2007 9:20AM
Hmmmmmm... you don't happen to have a 360 with a modified DVD drive, do you??
benjamin @ Aug 7th 2007 8:34AM
>What size is your tinfoil hat?
That is a secret held only by myself and my local haberdasher, I'm afraid.
benjamin @ Aug 7th 2007 11:29AM
>you don't happen to have a 360 with a modified DVD
>drive, do you??
Decidedly not. Despite my hatred of draconian DRM procedures and vendor lock-in, I'm not about to willfully damage my own hardware and/or proceed to violate both the law and spirit of the DMCA.
In fact, I find it nigh libelous that you see fit to accost me. Your words are slanderous!
Konny @ Aug 7th 2007 9:02AM
The question is: are you prepared to pay $10 more for those xbox controllers due to MS' proprietary wireless technology.
baby sea tuna @ Aug 7th 2007 9:21AM
That's still just a rumor. But if so, then sure. I'll take that $10 out of the money I saved by not buying a pre price-drop PS3.
deaftly @ Aug 7th 2007 11:31AM
ill just be purchasing the entire rock band set no matter the price, gotta love these things called jobs
Brucie B @ Aug 7th 2007 9:07AM
LOL Problems...
Bring on the Update! I'm Ready to ROCK!!!
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 7th 2007 9:28AM
Somehow seems lackluster compared to the Wii update...
LAboy @ Aug 7th 2007 10:09AM
And we care because?
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 7th 2007 11:43AM
If you didn't why did you reply.
Adam @ Aug 7th 2007 10:04AM
Well that's pretty annoying, i have it to boot into dashboard, so i have to open and close the draw now every time i turn it on.
Adam @ Aug 7th 2007 2:11PM
Errr yea, turned it off and on again, and it works now.
AirIntake @ Aug 7th 2007 10:18AM
Mine still shows the game's name........has the update been released in Canada yet? I don't remember seeing an update take place, but I was using my 360 connected to Live yesterday.
Brian @ Aug 7th 2007 11:59AM
After the update, my 360's drive wouldn't sense. Then I turned it off and back on. Now it's working.
Curt @ Aug 7th 2007 2:11PM
At least I can open the tray by remote now and not just close it like previously
Count Noobula @ Aug 7th 2007 5:31PM
Well, if anyone is still reading this thread, then read this: The Update has just bricked my colsole. I do not have a modded 360, and this is the third system I will be replacing soon. I downloaded the update not thinking anything of it, when I all of a sudden get a frozen system, followed by the red-ring-of-death.
GWolf @ Aug 11th 2007 6:22PM
How convenient, Me thinks thee are a liar.
Strykr @ Aug 7th 2007 5:53PM
I can't get the damned update. It gives me the option, I choose yes, the bar comes up, and doesn't move from the "empty" position. Choosing "no" means no Live for me.
Anyone else have/having this problem? ;_;
Rhythmattic @ Aug 7th 2007 11:12PM
@ least its a wireless update for a "Guitar" controller...
I mean... Who the F-#K releases a wireless Steering wheel ???
horngreen @ Aug 7th 2007 11:40PM
So I have to have more precious space on my hard drive taken up by an update for a game I will never own? Thanks MS.
Dan @ Aug 8th 2007 4:32PM
*cough* firware doesn't live on the harddrive *cough* (ever wondered how your 360 can boot without the HDD attached?)
Jacob @ Aug 8th 2007 11:53AM
Hey, has any one else had problems installing this update, my 360 will not sign into Xbox Live if I decline the update, but when I try to install it it fails to install! I don't even care about Guitar Hero, I have no intention of ever buying any of the games or controllers but apparently I have to have this update to run Xbox Live!
none @ Aug 8th 2007 3:31PM
This updated F'ed up my 360. >:(. The Disc tray no longer closes, and it doesn't read my discs. Last night my game got stuck in my 360 I was able to get it out thankfully. God this freaking sucks. way to go MS now I have to wait a month to get my 360 back :| >:(
GWolf @ Aug 11th 2007 6:22PM
Why must fan boys make shit up all the time? How gullible do you think we are? These amazing stories of 360 failing just as you decided to write in an online forum are just too much of a coincidence.
