They have a good point about console life cycle being a major concern when developing MMOs. Some of the older MMOs have been online for over a decade at this point and are still rolling along.

Sony, like them or not, DOES have a track record of their consoles being in production for 10 years, with a five year generation slip. That's just how they've done things to date.

The PS3, based on US sales, is no PS2, though. The price point and their general "lateness to the party" combined with the apparently (based on actual software available) negligible difference between 360 and PS3 games may prevent the PS3 from gaining that mass market traction that the PS2 or low-end PC has.

So far, PS3 isn't offering much gaming to that middle-of-the-road mass market. Xbox retail games have been similarly iffy, even though they do have a number of quality titles that should hit that family market squarely on the nose (a lot of the movie games are quality, even if they aren't up to the graphical standards of hardcore gamers, they do satisfy the kiddie market, and it's really hard to argue that Viva Pinata wasn't a good game. Fuzion Frenzy 2...well, you can't bat 1.000 every year). The XBLA on the other hand churns out older arcade titles (i.e. non-threatening nostalgia trips) and dead-on casual titles (mini-golf, board games, card games) at wal-mart shelf prices, while the PS3 download service has so far released only a few titles (although they seem to have much more internal studio activity than MGS).

Going on track record, hard to argue their point. Going on the current market? I guess it's too early to tell...maybe?

Here is a hint: Develop Guild Wars 2 for PS3 along with PC. Apparently the control scheme will be pretty useable for consoles. PS3 + mesmers = win

I can't believe I used "PS3" and "win" in the same sentence

Translation: Xbox Live's closed network sucks for MMO's.

Yes, because it was an extreme impediment to Final Fantasy XI releasing during the launch window.

Microsoft went out of their way on the 360 to make it MMO friendly. You don't require a gold account to play MMOs, the architecture of the system was redesigned to make it easier for publishers to host their own private servers and the terms of use were altered to allow other publishers to establish their own registration schemes.

Most of that was at EA's behest, but some of those concessions were based on Square's requests (by the by, whatever happened to the EA/Square Square/EA joint venture cross publishing agreement?)

As a person who doesn't play MMOs, I don't particularly care if any more show up on 360. However, your comments are uninformed fanboyism at it's best.

Given that Huxley and other MMOs are already scheduled for release on 360, and Sakaguchi and Bioware have expressed their interest in making MMOs for the platform, there is hardly an MMO crisis out there.

Teh EA/Square thing fell apart. I believe EA was hoping to get more by having EA games distributed in japan by Squaresoft, but it didn't prove fruitful enough so they backed out.

May of been a mutual decision.

well.. they don't really give any answers, do they.

the bit about roleplaying vs leveling was kinda interesting... though i'd be amazed if they pull it off, even in the slightest.

A hand held MMO would be easy..

If somehow there is a species of gamer out there that enjoys MMO games and console games, but not "traditional" PC games, then I guess the PS3 would be a perfect, and relatively inexpensive fit for that type of gamer. $600 gets you a machine that can do all of your MMO's, integrated voice and single or many user ID's, and has it's own library of games coming down the pipeline to boot.

Still not convinced on MMO games but I really want to hear about what NCSoft will be doing to help innovate. I want more than just super heroes, fantasy RPG's, and the weird space MMO's. I want an MMO FPS game, like planetside but not crappy, and I want to see more stuff like Tabula Rasa.

360 is NOT MMO friendly, since a real MMO:

1. Will REQUIRE a harddrive for updates
2. Needs pay plan flexibility and server control

The 360 for instance could never run WoW or Guild Wars, since both would require HDD for updates, and

WOW would want the monthly fees go directly to them, not MS

GW would not want to charge for online, yet the charge is built into XBL

PS3 is a lot more free in this regard.

I am still waiting for a Wii Pokemon MMO. Or Fire Emblem MMO, right? It sucks the Wii HD space is limited, though.

Simply require a hard drive and don't run off of live servers, like EA does. Problems solved.

1. If EQoA could handle updates just using 3MB of a PS2 memory card then an MMO can probably manage on an Xbox 360 memory unit. Plus, they're starting to release games that require a hard drive so they're willing to lift that restriction when necessary.

2. It would have it's own pricing plan. That's why MS doesn't require Live Gold for any games with their own montly fees. MS won't be getting a cut.

Yes a Pokemon MMO where you can run your own gym or become a breeder. Imagine professionals that will breed competitive Pokemon for you.

An idea like that would even get ME to play Pokemon again(hadn't touched nor cared for it since RED). Problem is, Nintendo has gone on record saying online game play isn't a major focus to them; and their track history proves such. Which is a shame because there's a LOT of games that could've used that online(massively)multiplayer boost to sway those "on-the-fence" gamers and Nintendo-nay sayers.

A tournament style Smash Bros Brawl online?
MMO StarFox(i.e., a *better* SW Galaxies)?
An "Unreal" Metroid Hunters FPS tournament?
Excitebike/truck Rally(like Motorstorm/Sega Rally)?

Online Mario Kart? ...well, at least this is supposedly happening(hopes aren't up very high on the online of this one).

It seems to me that PS3 is more MMO friendly than 360. It CLAIMS more power, its online is more liberal and it has an HDD.

I love MMOs and an exclusive NCSoft MMO on PS3 is a big plus in my PS3 book.

I think consoles in general are not perfect for MMOs. MMO control scheme is a challenge for consoles. Consoles are better suited for fast action gaming and, traditionally, MMOs are grindmills.

If NC changes the MMO paradigm, that would be awesome.
