Activision and EA traded a few barbs with each other over this fall's Battle of the Brands, pitting upstart Rock Band against stalwart Guitar Hero III, over at GameDaily BIZ. Their arguments are about what you'd expect, with Activision saying that Rock Band isn't accessible enough and EA saying that Rock Band is, in fact, so very accessible that it makes handicap ramps look more like ramparts.
While they're busy towing the company line, we're a little more interested in where you stand on the issue. Will you be venturing into the unknown? Or will you dance with who brought you, so to speak? Will you do both? Or, will you be like us and abandon both in favor of the secret dark horse: I Can Play Guitar.

wow. I thought they were both from the same developer. I never realized two different companies were doing these games. Makes you wonder how RB can get away with completely ripping off GH setup with the guitars. This may be cheesier than okami using music from zelda..

Well, not quite. The Rock Band developers (Harmonix) are the original developers of Guitar Hero. Neversoft (think Tony Hawk) is developing Guitar Hero 3.
So, no... Harmonix isn't ripping off anyone... it was their work originally.

I'll just get both. I've got Guitar Hero II for Xbox 360, so I have the Xplorer guitar. I can get a second guitar by buying Guitar Hero III, then buy Rock Band with the drums, maybe even add a mic on. I think using my existing Xplorer is the best bet, especially since the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band is coming with a wired one anyway.

I'm buying both, but I'm buying Guitar Hero 3 used off of eBay. Assuming it doesn't suck, which it very well might. I'm still mad at Activision because of the DLC pricing on GH2, and there's nothing the publishers hate more than the "grey market," as they call it. Goes to show you how they view us, when they consider consumers selling their games to other consumers to be immoral. I could write an entire newspaper article on why both sides of the IP arguments are wrong, but now's not the time. Anyway, by buying GH3 through eBay, I'm essentially giving Activision the finger while being able to enjoy the game they published.
I'm much, much more excited for Rock Band than GH3, though. Yes, I will probably buy the entire set. However, you don't have to. That's the thing that so many detractors of Rock Band don't understand. The game is Guitar Hero, Drum Hero, and Mic Hero in one. The fact that Harmonix is making it gives me confidence that each instrument will be well-done and individually make it worth purchasing the game. You can buy your instrument and never touch another instrument if you want to. Furthermore, in the case of parties, Rock Band is better because 4 people can play, as opposed to only two on Guitar Hero. Once people hear about Rock Band (which they will, since EA's publishing it and Lord knows EA isn't shy with advertising,) Rock Band will be the victor.

I will dance with the one who brought me, by which I mean Harmonix. It's ridiculous to me to consider GH3 the old one. Harmonix has made four of the most lauded music games ever: Frequency, Amplitude, Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero 2. Rock Band is their fifth.
Guitar Hero 3 has a brand name and little else. Neversoft has never made a single music game, have they? I will probably try it because I like the formula, but if I could only have one it's no contest. Harmonix's game will rule the school.

"pitting upstart Rock Band against stalwart Guitar Hero III"
If you ask me, Guitar Hero 3 (ie, Neversoft) is the newcomer against the incumbent Rock Band (ie, Harmonix).
Personally, I'll be passing on Rock Band just because I neither have nor want a 360 or a PS3.
I don't remember if GH3 is going to be on PS2 or not, but if not, I'll be skipping that too, because there isn't a chance in hell I'm shelling out the cash for ANOTHER one or two guitar controllers just so I can play on the Wii.

...UNLESS the Wii GH2 supports guitar controllers connected to the GC controller ports. Because I have a PS2 -> GC controller adapter.

Apparently it is and you bring up a good point. Neversoft isn't really known for music/rhythm games, this is pretty much their debut into this genre. So you're kindda taking a risk. Good luck with that. Gonna stick with Rock Band.

Yeah, I picked up GH2: Encore 80s and thought, "Yeah, not liking the way this franchise is going."
I look at Rock Band and think, Guitar 2.0. I look at Guitar Hero 3 and think, Guitar 1.3.
I like Guitar Hero, but after seeing that "crazy" video of some expert track that I'll never have a chance in hell of playing, I just think it's time to bring in some friends who might not be as good as me.
Rock Band looks more accessible to me because there's slightly different things to do. I have a couple friends who love to belt out karaoke, but it's just not my thing, and I can't play drums, but I know others who can. 4 player vs. 2 player simply put, sounds like more fun when you get more people involved.
Only thing that sucks for me is I don't have a 360 or PS3, so either way I have to invest in a console before I can play either of these games. :( Now if GH3 is coming out on PS2, well then that'd make the decision much easier.

Oops, guess GH3 is PS2 and Wii compatible, so who knows. I'd get Wii version, but that would mean 2 new guitars, and if I'm going to be investing in Guitars I might as well make sure I can play them with Rock Band too.

I didn't buy Steel Batallion, no matter how cool that controller was, so I can't picture spending 200 bucks on Rock Band. My plan is to get GHIII for the 360, then get the GHII without the guitar, then get my downloadable tracks on.

Guitar Hero III. I'll be getting the cheapest music game out there. Because I have a Wii. I might wait until around next March or April to get Rock Band, seeing as how I don't have a 360 now but I will then. Besides, I like the songs in GHIII better.

I'm going to get them both, although I won't be buying the GH3 guitar.

Let's put it this way, Harmonix made Guitar Hero II and it was awesome. They are the ones behind Rock Band.
Guitar Hero III is made by the same people that practically are only famous for bringing Tony Hawk games.
The choice is obvious.

ROCK BAND Is the way to go.....HARMONIX is what made Guitar Hero Great....and after how crappy GH Encore: Rock the 80's was...I just fully expect Activision to drive the GH line into the ground instead of improving it.
HARMONIX is really who you should support as they are the geniuses behind really reviving IMO the music game genre....
From the totally underappreciated FREQUENCY & AMPLITUDE and onwards.....they are always a developer to watch.

The image has been altered. It is originally from Revenge of the Ninja, an 80's ninja flick and of course they were originally swords, not guitars.
