SOE announces Ramayan 3392 A.D. MMO
Sony Online Entertainment has announced a collaboration with Virgin Comics intended to transform the Ramayan 3392. A.D. comic book series into an MMO, "initially" bound for the PC. Based on the Indian Ramayana story and set in a post-apocalyptic humans vs. demons world (obviously), the Deepak Chopra-developed comic franchise would seem to lend itself well to the genre without resorting to Western swords and sorcery shenanigans.
The multi-year, worldwide licence agreement sees SOE developing and publishing the game with creative consultation provided by Virgin Comics. The company's chief creative officer, Gotham Chopra, noted the prominence of "duty, honor, sacrifice, and fraternity" in the story, as well as "uniquely Indian ideas like karma (how action and consequence are linked) and the malleability of time itself." Delving deeper, he concluded that working on the game with SOE is "just awesome."
With no release date announced, we likely have quite a wait ahead of us before learning about online duty, honor, sacrifice, fraternity and awesomeness.

I was excited...
ForceUnleashed @ Aug 9th 2007 12:35PM
Oh wow I thought the exact same thing! And I got excited cuz I thought it might be a more serious type of Rayman game set in the future with awesome bad guys etc...
But no...its just another MMO. God don't people ever get tired of those things? I mean I've got a life...why would I need a digital one?
just.Rob @ Aug 9th 2007 12:56PM
same... would be so much better if you were shooting rabbids with that lightning rod crossbow machete thinger
eldee @ Aug 9th 2007 1:11PM
LOL I thought the same thing.. then I saw the picture and thought "WHAT DID THEY DO TO RAYMAN??"
/whew
Ryan LN @ Aug 9th 2007 1:26PM
That makes like seventeen of us. I was thinking "man, they *really* went in a different direction with Rayman's look."
LessThanMrt @ Aug 9th 2007 1:29PM
I did the same thing. In my mind I thought about how more efficient disembodied limbs could be in the future
Word of the street. @ Aug 9th 2007 2:27PM
Ha I'm not the only one that thought it said Rayman.
Well this must say something about the popularity of Ramayan or Rayman.
A Rayman MMO It would be so cool.Battle ordes of those wascally wabbits.I would love to play something like that.
mr nimblewick @ Aug 9th 2007 12:34PM
So now we can level grind in future india? Great!
OnimushaSoki @ Aug 9th 2007 12:46PM

beans @ Aug 9th 2007 1:06PM
who gives a shit, wake me up when there's talk about a harry potter mmo
Warrior @ Aug 9th 2007 5:55PM
There was talk about a Harry Potter MMO. SOE was set to develop it, but the deal fell apart.
Word of the street. @ Aug 9th 2007 2:34PM
Harry potters EWWW.I rather have a Pokémon MMO instead.
A Harry potter MMO...
Lets see what classes are available, Wizard, Wizard or Wizard oh look there is also the Wizard prestige class.
Really Harry potter sucks, I pity the fool that read the books.
You know what I hate about Harry potter, is extremely popular without a reason even Pokémon was passable but Harry potter is so dull, the story is weak and it seems there is an obligatory dead in every book.
Harry potter is a POS compared to the Forgotten Realms books, now those are good. Magic the gathering books are pretty cool; Fifth Dawn entertains me for a while.
bean @ Aug 9th 2007 3:01PM
I can't believe I'm arguing this BUT if you've read any of the books you'd know there are more than just wizards, not only that, characters could specialize in certian styles of magic. A Harry Potter mmo wouldn't be too far fetched, and with its large fan base, if done right would destroy WoW.
Korova @ Aug 9th 2007 1:10PM
Coincidently, 3392 A.D. is also the release date. Unfortunately, my outlook calendar is not Y3K compliant.
ThornedVenom @ Aug 9th 2007 1:12PM
I'd actually be interested in an MMO like this: stay away from the "generic" fantasy genre to innovate more themes. Post-apocalyptic Indian legend/mythology (wait, is it Hindu or just generically Indian?) seems to have something new to bring to the table.
My interest is piked thanks to this MMO I used to beta-test a long while ago named Tantra (which I think was from the Philippines). Similar theming with Hindu mythology, gaining prana, aligning yourself to a God, etc... and fighting weird creatures and demons. But it wasn't futuristic.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 9th 2007 1:41PM
Getting piked leads to serious bleeding, loss of organs, and death. I suggest to remove the pike and bind yourself together to prevent your organs from falling out. I feel sorry for your interest.
I too also thought of Rayman.
Shagittarius @ Aug 9th 2007 1:45PM
I'm more concerned if it brings any new mechanics or gameplay to the genre...not what the silly setting is.
valisol @ Aug 9th 2007 1:52PM
I tried Tantra, too, back in the beta. Never got really far, as my connection sucked...
BTW, I think you meant 'piqued,' not 'piked.'
Knoxximus @ Aug 9th 2007 2:18PM
Here we go! Star Wars Galaxies part 2...this time with even MOAR SUCK!
Boot2TheHead @ Aug 9th 2007 3:20PM
Deepak Chopra is a tool. Total snake oil salesman. I wouldn't touch this simply because he's involved in it.
baby sea tuna @ Aug 9th 2007 3:40PM
I hope they get D-Pak and the Chopacabras to do the soundtrack for this game...
Korova @ Aug 9th 2007 4:27PM
Hold on, I just had a thought. Wait, oh yes!
If this game in any way involves post-apocalyptic human-demon Kama Sutra action, I might not mind the level grind so much?
But then again, I am just a sick little yellow undersea creature that looks like a pokemons.
Jose @ Aug 9th 2007 4:46PM
The fuck!?
Not another MMO, why couldn't they just do something less cliched and boring.
This game looks like it'd be a perfect fit for something like Okami. They can be true to the source material, as true as Clover studios was with Yokai. This is just lame.
Sean @ Aug 9th 2007 4:58PM
Doesn't anyone else notice the strange paradoxical nature of the title? Ramayan 3392 A.D. is using the Julian/Gregorian calendar. I.E. the Christian calendar where the birth of Christ (roughly) corresponds to year 0. That just makes no sense to me.
t_m @ Aug 10th 2007 7:04AM
lol
shivam @ Aug 9th 2007 5:12PM
a hindu game? about effing time. here's to hoping its actually worth the effort.
BobboMJones @ Aug 9th 2007 6:06PM
I wonder if it would lead to the development of a hindi game scene.
*rimshot*
Hindi, indie... oh nevermind.
4cr JaXs @ Aug 10th 2007 4:31PM
Question: If the year is 3392 AD, why the **** is he using a bow?
inlogic @ Aug 10th 2007 8:04PM
I thought it was interesting...
...until I read that SOE was behind it.
Jeff @ Aug 13th 2007 12:09AM
MMOs are going to be 2010s FPS.
Jestor Rodo @ Aug 25th 2007 10:40AM
An Indian MMO with SOE involved is a Hin-don't! Love that
Jestor!
