August brings Metroid and Super Metroid to Virtual Console

This month will also bring the long-awaited Virtual Console releases of Metroid (for 500 points) on August 13 and Super Metroid (800 points), considered by some to be the greatest game of all time, on August 20. As you've probably already guessed, this is all leading up the the reason for the season: The release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on August 27. Now go, little one. Hang your ice beam over the fire and try once again to get your lady friend to put on the armor you bought her as you insist that it's part of the holiday spirit.

Incidentally, the first metroid was also released in august 21 years ago, 1986/08/06 to be specific.
Stupidiot @ Aug 10th 2007 8:21AM
Does Metroid Prime: Corruption have a later release date in the UK and Europe, I'm having trouble tracking down a shop with a solid release date :/
Reality @ Aug 10th 2007 11:34AM
At this time, it is coming out October 26 in the UK and Europe
OnimushaSoki @ Aug 10th 2007 8:21AM
"...if you're the sort of Wii owner who hasn't bought a game since April (read: most of you) then you're probably not going to need much convincing."
-raises hand- Yep, I'm among those. Last game I bought(for myself & dad)was Tiger Woods'07 in March. Just didn't like anything else since then for purchase. :\
Just out of curiousity... does anyone know if "Sadness" is still set for release on the Wii next year? It looked pretty intriguing and IGN still has it posted as March'08 for release.

Charron @ Aug 10th 2007 12:20PM
I think Sadness has fallen into vaporware, for the most part.
And I've bought many games since April. Just... Virtual Console games. And a GameCube game or two. Those count, right?
The_Wind_Waker8 @ Aug 10th 2007 8:25AM
It downloads fast and I'm watching them over and over again. Oh, I also hear its for America only. ^_^
Maybe we should let IGN complain more often about the lack of hype for some games. :P
Captain Jody Anthony XVIII @ Aug 10th 2007 8:26AM
METROID!!!! Woooooo!
dvdguy @ Aug 10th 2007 8:26AM
Good, now people can shut the hell up. Until they find the next unreleased VC title to whine about that is.
Has there been any news about giving away VC points as part of preorders or anything like that? Wasn't that a big rumor back before the launch of the Wii?
Steve @ Aug 10th 2007 1:32PM
Earthbound!!! Where is my Eaaaarthbound? Come on, release it already!
KirbyMeister @ Aug 10th 2007 2:45PM
Steve: you must pray 9 times
baby sea tuna @ Aug 10th 2007 8:30AM
Finally, A VC game worth my money! I can't just buy 800 points, can I? If not, maybe I'll get Devil's Crush...I remember that being pretty fun.
John @ Aug 10th 2007 8:30AM
Is this why my Wii slot was glowing this morning? I turned it on but couldn't find what was new.
baby sea tuna @ Aug 10th 2007 8:47AM
You know, they make a cream for that now.
waLLy @ Aug 10th 2007 2:06PM
psst.... check your message board...
Jake @ Aug 10th 2007 8:39AM
I just don't understand the timing.
Mike @ Aug 10th 2007 3:34PM
My thoughts exactly. Metroid on the NES should have come out first week of July. Super Metroid first week of this month. Then release Corruption. That's the way to build up hype. Now I have no time to play the VC games and won't download them because I know Corruption is coming out in less than 3 weeks.
ZenGaijin @ Aug 10th 2007 8:42AM
Wait, why is SuperMetroid more expensive than the other games? Nintendo needs to stick to their pricing schedule for their games.
That being said Super Metroid is an instant buy for me its probably my favorite game of all time.
Backslash @ Aug 10th 2007 8:47AM
I'm pretty sure all SNES games are 800 Wii Points. And Super Metroid is, you know, a SNES game.
Godmil @ Aug 10th 2007 8:52AM
Super Metroid is a SNES game, so the 800 points is a standard.
Cal @ Aug 10th 2007 8:44AM
You know, I've never played Super Metroid before. If only I had a Wireless Router, or I could be assed looking for one of those illegal thingamajigs.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 10th 2007 8:48AM
It's own preview channel. Sweet! I'll finally play Super Metroid. Only Metroid II and III I haven't played yet.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 10th 2007 8:56AM
its
Backslash @ Aug 10th 2007 8:48AM
This is great! I already own a copy of Super Metroid, but I guess I can pick up the original Metroid, since I've never actually owned a console version of it. Zero Mission is love.
megaStryke @ Aug 10th 2007 8:55AM
The original NES Metroid is included ON the Zero Mission cartridge.
Backslash @ Aug 10th 2007 8:57AM
Right, and I said -console- version.
megaStryke @ Aug 10th 2007 9:05AM
But... you OWN it already. Why buy a second one?
Backslash @ Aug 10th 2007 9:10AM
So I can play it on a screen bigger than my DS Lite's. >>
. . . actually I have no idea myself.
Mr Khan @ Aug 10th 2007 5:57PM
Have you ever beaten Metroid Fusion? Link it to Metroid Prime, and you get a console Metroid, and you don't have to memorize passwords!
(that's how i got it)
Kryptinite @ Aug 10th 2007 9:04AM
This is exactly what I've been waiting for!!! I love the Metroid series so this is like a huge dream world for me.
Crono @ Aug 10th 2007 9:05AM
Everybody seems to be missing (or just not commenting on) the big news here. Nintendo finally has trailers available through their online service. I could say welcome to 2005, but that would be crappy. Instead I'll say "WOOT. Trailers on Wii Ware. WOOT!"
Anni @ Aug 10th 2007 2:52PM
That's exactly how I felt about it. It's a huge step in the right direction for Nintendo actually using their online capabilities. Not to mention it's just really cool. They need to continue this kind of exclusive Wii content. Lord knows everyone and their mother would download a Samus Mii.
A... a Miitroid.
vidGuy @ Aug 10th 2007 9:10AM
I had a feeling the blue glow was for something cool this morning, but I didn't have the time to check it. Neat that Nintendo is doing this to making every Wii owner aware of the game's release.
Could anybody tell me (since I'm away from the Wii), is this a Preview Channel that is now featuring MP3:C, or is it MP3's own channel, as in we will have to download a new one for every game that is featured? It would be cool if it was just a Preview Channel and it updated every time you accessed it with new feature games.
Crono @ Aug 10th 2007 9:29AM
Seems kinda dumb to have a separate preview channel for each upcoming game, especially when all they have to do is change the content on their end.
But this is Nintendo we're talking about here. It wouldn't suprise me if they did something stupid like that.
ryan @ Aug 10th 2007 1:03PM
Will you be able to use the blaster attachment for this game? I can't wait to play a FPS with that thing.
jorojoserojas @ Aug 10th 2007 9:37AM
It's strictly Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, but you do bring up a good point. I would like a channel dedicated to prewiews (demos?) on all sorts of games.
But in any case, first chance you get, go home and download this Metroid channel. I'm all sorts of anxious for this game now.
accidental @ Aug 10th 2007 9:24AM
Dangit! We don't have this yet in Australia – perhaps they'll do it in November, which is our 'metroid month'.
Pricks.
ck @ Aug 10th 2007 9:34AM
I think it's only for Metroid Prime 3. Yeah, it would be great to have a preview channel, but I think having it's own channel is cool - the blue glow and getting people excited about games is a great idea - even if they have to have a separate download. It's not like you have to keep it after you've bought the game. I guess you could put it on an SD card...
I just hope they use this to its full potential - like putting a demo of MP3 on the preview channel and having a MP3 skin for the Wii Menu. That would be awesome. Nintendo should think about doing this with third part games, too. They provide the service, the developers make the content. It's a win-win situation, because the game gets more coverage and Nintendo looks like a great company to work with from a developer standpoint.
Crono @ Aug 10th 2007 9:35AM
Agreed. A demo would be awesome. But I'm not holding my breath.
shivr @ Aug 10th 2007 10:38AM
yeah, a demo would probably require something of a hard drive though... or at least support for usb hard drives
Tckob @ Aug 10th 2007 9:41AM
Has anybody notice that the blue light on the Wii fades out a little differently, after the update.
waLLy @ Aug 10th 2007 2:11PM
Yup. It's a bit more abrupt with its blinking now. Not as smooth and fade-ey.
Almack64 @ Aug 10th 2007 9:50AM
What there's a preview channel? Even if its just for Metroid that is pretty big news. Man now I have to wait all day to see this.
Crono @ Aug 10th 2007 9:58AM
Could be worse, I have to wait until sometime next week for my wii to come home.
samfish @ Aug 10th 2007 9:56AM
Damn...that's the second update in a row where mine wasn't glowing to tell me there was an update.
Anyway, I hope they keep this up for game previews in general. That would be cool.
But this had better not be that "surprise" we were promised by Reggie. A Metroid preview channel is neat, but still something of a letdown in that sense.
Crono @ Aug 10th 2007 10:16AM
Do you have wiiconnect24 on?
Martin @ Aug 10th 2007 10:17AM
That's funny, I just got these email from my wife: "I believe the Wii is making illicit advances ... it started 'winking' at me. Gosh!"
ROFL
samfish @ Aug 10th 2007 11:20AM
Yup, I do indeedarinidoo have it on. I double checked after the last update a few days ago because it wasn't glowing then, either.
Orange Soda @ Aug 10th 2007 12:36PM
I don't have a blue flashy light either. I suspect it's because I have the Nintendo WiFi USB Adapter thing. I heard some gripes about it not being on all the time some time ago.
jorojoserojas @ Aug 10th 2007 4:53PM
The settings might have it off. Go into your Wii Settings and see if you have the Slot Illumination to Off. Maybe the updates resetted your settings.
Shadow @ Aug 10th 2007 10:34AM
if anyone dosen't know, check the shop channel, there's a metroid prview for free
