I would argue that the Hitchcock/Welles of gaming would be Will Wright.

Either you or Wikipedia (I vote the latter) is incorrect on the spelling of the author's name. Breben? Braben? Meh.

Why is everybody still calling things "next-gen?" All three consoles have been out for almost a year now, and wouldn't that make them "current-gen." Or, if you're going to use a fancy buzzword, at least call them "seventh-generation" consoles and games, at least that's what Wikipedia calls them.

OK, here's the thing.

I don't own a next-gen console yet. I'm still playing my PS2 and saving spare change, dreaming of purchasing an Xbox 360 sometime in the near (or not) future.

And the next gen doesn't start until I say it does.

I read the article.

They are going in the wrong direction. Realistic graphics do not make games more enjoyable. If they did now one would ever play video games because real life would always compare better.

They need to develop new game dynamics and mechanics using new tech power. Not focus on crossing the uncanny valley. And I agree, that will take a Hitchcock or a Wells.

They call them next-gen because they don't have acceptance in the marketplace. Hee hee. Wii has no problem since it's the new generation.

Braben is a legend. I still have memories of Elite as a kid. I probably have some permanent bladder damage as a result of that game.

Why thye BBC makes everything sound so boring?.They could be talking about Hot chicks with guns fighting hordes of zombies and demons and make it sound boring.

Hot chicks with guns fighting hordes of zombies are boring. I've been watching those kinds of popcorn action flicks, and playing those kinds of popular games, since I was a teenager. Now I find them to be shallow and pointless. I want more substance. Give me plot, give me character development, give me something with a little more intellect than "shoot the zombies"!

I wouldn't call the current crop of 360 and PS3 titles next-gen, they're merely updates of the style of games we were playing on the PS2, Cube and XBox which in themselves were updates of the PS1, N64, DC and Saturn era.

The last jump we had was between the 16-bit and 32-bit era's that was what I'd deem a "next-gen" jump.

I agree, this generation isn't dramatically different from last generation with the possible exception of the Wii (and even that hasn't shown anything truly groundbreaking yet).

The only thing that I think is really different about this generation is all of the downloadable games and optional content. It's more the service that has changed, rather than the product.

Exactly. First take SMB 3 and compare it to Super Mario World. That was a jump in gaming. Take say, any SNES game and compare it to PS/N64. Another jump. Compare Syphon Filter 3 (PS) to MGS3 (PS2). A rather large jump in gaming. Now take this generation. Compare Super Mario Sunshine with Super Mario Galaxy. There is a jump, but not a great one.

Just as an additional, "true next-gen" comparison: Compare MGS3 to MGS4. I realize some people don't like counting the Wii's "inferior" tech.

I guess this means Halo 3 isn't truly a next-gen game, since it doesn't really add much.

Next Gen = Games with take cover mechanism. Clearly!

But yah, nothing out of the current "Next Gen" systems has been innovative. In all honesty, Wii games are already copying themselves, 360/PS3 games are sequels of already existing ideas/IPs. Gaming in general is just at a dead end, but as gaming has now suddenly become cool & hip, new gamers are getting sucked into these batches of carbon copy titles, and buying up the ideas of developers that us hardcore gamers have already passed up on as stale and old.
