BioShock goes gold, Irrational Games becomes 2K Boston / 2K Australia

After acquiring Irrational early last year, Take-Two has undoubtedly enjoyed the litany of critical praise the still-unreleased BioShock has enjoyed. Furthering their journey into the corporate belly of the beast, it was also announced this afternoon that Irrational Games would now be known as 2K Boston and 2K Australia. Are you worried this means that the development studio formerly known as Irrational would be artistically compromised, reduced to making movie-licensed games for hire? Ken Levine, President and Creative Director of 2K Boston, assuages all of our fears saying, "We're proud to be part of the 2K Games family and enjoy the new opportunities and artistic freedoms this strengthened relationship provides." Let's hope so. Speaking of which, what's next for

Is Irrational in two places or something?
Christopher Grant @ Aug 10th 2007 2:50PM
They have a development studio in Canberra, Australia as well, yes. They were working on the PC version of BioShock.

I'd really love to see Irrational handle a multi-platform sequel to Prey. The concept of the original was great, sadly many portions were poorly executed.

Screw Prey,Freedom force 3 FTW.
Jake @ Aug 10th 2007 2:48PM
Yeah, I'd agree with you. The general atmosphere as well as the whole concept of how they handled gravity, warps, and puzzles were kind of pissed away with overall poor execution. You play that game and walk away realizing how much better it could have been. The part where you warp onto that little rock was a classic moment in next gen gaming, though, imo.
It sucks that they have to drop a well respected name like Irrational Games in return for something as generic as 2K. Now people always have to give their dev name along with "formerly Irrational Games" so that people don't think its a shit dev working on game X. Gay.

I agree with Jake the change of name is awful as he said now we have to say they were "Irrational games" so we know 2k didnt put a lame ass dev into work.
BTW I still want Freedom Force 3.

I don't get it, why would Take Two want to get rid of the Irrational name? It's a name that is currently holding quite a bit of weight in the industry, so you'd think they'd want to proudly display it, rather than replacing it with a generic name that no one will remember, which is useless for marketing purposes.

NO PS3 VERSION ANYMORE!?!?!?!
"cries" Well I'm buying an Xbox 360 now...
pete @ Aug 10th 2007 3:47PM
Uh, was there ever a PS3 version of this game?
Moofree @ Aug 10th 2007 4:00PM
There was never a ps3 version planned...
bl13 @ Aug 10th 2007 5:45PM
At the very beginning the game was unveiled for 360, PS3 and PC, then after some time the PS3 version is dropped and there's been one or two rumors that a PS3 port is in the works but nothing really ever materialized.
Daran @ Aug 10th 2007 4:11PM
God, this name change sucks.
BananaBoat @ Aug 10th 2007 4:24PM
I don't put much stock into the names of dev's anymore. Everyone hyped up Shadowrun because dev company *Whatever* was doing it, and so I went out and I bought the game, only to find out that it sucked so hard that I wanted to cry. I'm going to gamefly Bioshock for sure, but there is no way I'm dropping another 3 jeffersons (that's how I roll) on a game that just as easily could be horrible.
jynxycat @ Aug 10th 2007 7:27PM
While I still enjoy Shadowrun, and FASA as regards to their handling of the original Battletech board games... Nothing they have made short of Crimson Skies was any good.
MechCommander (yuck), MechWarrior 4 (The beginning of the end), Crimson Skies (even the blind get lucky?), then Shadowrun.

That aside, Lair went gold too didn't it ? Anything can happen apparently. Or well, maybe just to Sony's titles.
CooperHawkes @ Aug 10th 2007 7:26PM
And so it begins.. the monthly bombardment of at least one game that I want.... oh well, I guess my son gets nothing for Christmas.. :)
Ryuukuro @ Aug 10th 2007 8:53PM
NOOOOO!!! I swear that if and when I have a company of my own I will never sell it. I will never let my dream be owned by someone else, to have their name cover my own. I know BioShock will be great but at what cost?
And now that they're just a subsidiary of 2K, just a cog in a machine, will Freedom Force III ever be made?
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 11th 2007 12:40AM
