Prototype is not, as the name implies, the birth of a new genre, but rather the next in an indirect line of open-world games from developer Radical Entertainment. Building upon its past releases like
The Simpsons Hit & Run,
Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and
Scarface -- and seemingly borrowing "jump 30 stories"-like elements from Realtime World's more recent
Crackdown -- Radical has chosen New York City as its sandbox and a shape-shifting mystery man as its hero. There'll be a conspiracy to uncover and, of course, a lot of ass kicking.
Publisher Sierra expects
Prototype next summer on Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3 (where Sierra will have to come up with a marketing strategy to distinguish its game from Sucker Punch's
inFamous).

Intriguing. They'd best not flub it.

A sandbox game set in new york, just what we needed!
true crime: new york, spiderman 2, spiderman 3, driver:pl, GTA 3 and GTA 4 just don't seem to be filling that "new york based sandbox game" in the action/adventure genre

Unveils? I got a gaming magazine with a full preview a month or two ago.

Crackdown....Is one of those games that is great for a rental but really is not something you want to play a lot, getting all the achievements is long and tedious, I could get pro street racer but is so boring.
I need like 23 or 25 achievements of crackdown but damn I rather play Pursuit Force, funny how a Portable game is better than a console game. I still have it I bought it in a heartbeat for the halo 3 beta without it I would probably waited for the reviews instead, is not bad but it could’ve been better.
Sandbox games suffer from something that makes them fun for about 2 hours but then it gets awfully repetitive, maybe is for the lack of a good story to follow. Other than Dead Rising which I don’t know if is counted in the genera I haven’t encounter with a great sandbox type of game
In Dead rising if it wasn’t for the achievements you would probably finish the game once or twice and then get rid of it but the achievement somehow help the game, really If it wasn’t for the achievements I would never tried saving 53/54 survivors and believe me it was frustrating but it was a lot of fun also Frank the pimp was freaking rad.
I only need 3 achievements of Dead Rising BTW man I love that game.
Well back on topic if they are going for something like Crackdown If they put vehicles I hope the game really use them and not only for stunts that get old fast and achievements that only force you to use these lousy vehicles when jumping and running is way more fun and please Boss fights people and a Good story, kthnx.

Dead Rising FTW.
eldee @ Aug 10th 2007 7:01PM
bleh, this developer does nothing but straight up rip other games off.
Cinder @ Aug 10th 2007 8:12PM
Which games are these that they ripped off???
Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction was the best superhero game ever made.
Word of the street. @ Aug 10th 2007 10:08PM
Cinder I believe the best marvel superhero game ever is Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
ForceUnleashed @ Aug 10th 2007 7:33PM
Doesn't sound all too exciting right now...but we'll see.
J @ Aug 10th 2007 8:23PM
Looks generic
Goodchild @ Aug 10th 2007 8:45PM
Um....Prototype like Crackdown?
Flattering, but didn't anyone notice how much Crackdown lifted from Hulk:UD? These are the guys that made Hulk.
Richard @ Aug 10th 2007 10:06PM
That's exactly what I was gonna say.
leland @ Aug 10th 2007 9:54PM
isn't a sandbox adventure game basically an RPG?
Word of the street. @ Aug 10th 2007 10:13PM
No,RPGs count with rich or at least long stories and character development while Sandbox games are more like "Here a giant world for you to do whatever you want with it".
I believe a sandbox adventure game is just a giant game with what?,some puzzles here and there but really I dont know how an adventure game could be done in New york unless they turned Central park into a jungle.
Megaqwerty @ Aug 10th 2007 10:57PM
"Sandbox" is a buzzword. RPG is a genre.
Ryuukuro @ Aug 11th 2007 1:57AM
It bothers me that in the early previews they seem to be pushing using the hero to kill innocent people. If this is a true sandbox then that will be an option, not a necessity, but I don't think that option should be promoted at this time in gaming, although I heartily support it being allowed as evil acts, like good acts, are necessary for a true sandbox game. No matter what, I'm intrigued to see what else you can do in "Prototype."
ssuk @ Aug 11th 2007 7:38AM
I think in this case, it's just survival. This guy's wanted by whatever the armed guys work for, because as the name prompts, this guy is a prototype and a prototype most likely gone wrong, he's potentially dangerous. So, depending on your perspective is how you see who the 'bad guy(s)' are. ... It's a generic story line and quite a bad one at that, but whatever.
