Riddick's next-gen remake delayed until 2008
Legend has it, there were people – humans – that actually enjoyed the Chronicles of Riddick film, starring The Pacifier himself, Vin Diesel. Those "people" are now in the dark on the real status of a sequel – or sequels, as it was envisioned – but fans of the wow-it's-really-pretty-good Chronicles of Riddick video game were looking forward to a next-gen remake, dubbed Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena touching down in 2007. Unfortunately, Sierra has confirmed that Riddick will join the rest of the delayed games this year, and be pushed back until 2008. The game's original developer, Starbreeze Studios, are back to "reinvent" their effort with an additional chapter, some online multiplayer, and of course high-definition muscles for our Riddick character (those have to be just right).

Cue the PS3 has made the development time longer. It is the PS3 that delayed it...in. 5,4,3,2,1.
Snukadaman @ Aug 11th 2007 3:23PM
maybe its not the ps3...maybe its the wii version that delayed it this time?
rfom @ Aug 12th 2007 4:17AM
It still wont be as good as Halo 3
David @ Aug 11th 2007 11:09AM
Laaaaaaaaaaaaame.
Was expecting to play Riddick again this year. Again:
Laaaaaaaaaaaaame.
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Aug 11th 2007 11:55AM
You sir, win one internet for that avatar.
Anam @ Aug 11th 2007 1:11PM
Ludwig, I demand you to post a new comment that is not in reply to someone so I can see a larger version of your avatar, because I can't tell what it is.
(Is it a Disney character?)
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 11th 2007 1:49PM
Anam, you can click Ludwig's name or anyone else's to see their avatar. I believe it's from Monkey Island or one of those Lucas Arts games.
David @ Aug 11th 2007 2:04PM
It's Stan the disreputable salesman!
Anam @ Aug 11th 2007 9:05PM
@hvnlysoldr
Yes, I suppose I *could* do that, but then I wouldn't be making silly demands of Ludwig, which is much more enjoyable.
vidGuy @ Aug 11th 2007 11:10AM
I wouldn't think slapping sweat and loads of bloom on an already finished game and adding a half-assed multiplayer effort would take that long.
This game is going to be on the level of RE4: Wii Edition. That game gets the benefit of much better controls (this will get better graphics) and a little extra content, but it's still a port.
waynski1457 @ Aug 11th 2007 11:12AM
i guess i will be the first to say that i actually liked the riddick movies (not the anime tho...).
but yea, as long as the game ends up good, i really dont care how long it takes. theres already way too many good looking games coming out before the year's end anyway.
Rob Accomando @ Aug 11th 2007 11:13AM
I enjoyed the film. Saw it in the theater and bought the DVD. Great Sci-fi flick.
I could care less about a "Next Gen" remake though. It's not like the original game had horrible graphics or something.
If it was a sequel/follow-up then maybe I'd be interested in spending $60
1010101 @ Aug 11th 2007 11:15AM
There skipping the Halo 3 hype train.
Nothing to see here.
David @ Aug 11th 2007 11:18AM
Pitch Black was good, the sequel was insane. They tried to make him seem important and it just came off as a crazy ass movie with no since of direction.
polly @ Aug 11th 2007 12:17PM
Second that. Chronicles was retarded. Pitch Black was way better.
Ben Hobbs @ Aug 11th 2007 2:43PM
Chronichles of Riddick was by far the better movie, I've seen Pitch Black but only once and can't even remember that much of it - Chronicles I have seen a number of times, and enjoyed it each time.
Who wants to see a movie about night time? I can look out my window before I sleep to get the same effect.
polly @ Aug 11th 2007 5:50PM
Who wants to see a movie about how badass Vin Diesel is? That's all Chronicles offered. It was XXX in space. The fact that it's a sequel alone makes it the weaker movie.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 11th 2007 11:22AM
Pitch Black was Sci-Fi horror survival. For that I hate it. I actually like the sequel better but found a disconnect in how it was a sequel and the ridiculous plot.
polly @ Aug 11th 2007 12:19PM
What's wrong with that? Alien was sci-fi horror.
Stef Geiger @ Aug 11th 2007 11:32AM
@1: Highly unlikely, since they're using the The Darkness engine, which has already been well implemented on the PS3.
And yeah, Chronicles was MUCH better than Pitch Black. It's a damn good movie.
Spinfusor @ Aug 11th 2007 12:01PM
The game's original developer, Starbreeze Studios, IS back to "reinvent" ITS effort with an additional chapter...
HB96st @ Aug 11th 2007 12:35PM
I never seen Pitch Black (dont like horror flicks), But I thought Chronicles was good! I will get Both on HD-DVD..
Rare Hare @ Aug 12th 2007 3:32PM
Pitch Black was waaaaay better than Chronicles of Riddick. Way with 5 A's.
Twist @ Aug 11th 2007 12:35PM
If this new version if half as good as the original it will be worth the wait. Way I figure it we have enough good games due out before the end of this year (between Mass Effect, Bioshock, HL2: Orange Box, and Halo 3 (listed in order of importance to me) I doubt I have much time for anything else) so it is nice to see a few delayed so we have something to look forward to early next year.
HB96st @ Aug 11th 2007 1:00PM
LOL, I had to do it... are you afraid of the dark??
Christopher Grant @ Aug 11th 2007 2:25PM
Awesome avatar. And by awesome I mean it's really bad. But by really bad, I mean great. :D
rdj75 @ Aug 11th 2007 1:05PM
I enjoyed both pitch black and chronicles. The game was one of the best games I have ever played last gen. If its a remake with a few extra levels then I would hope they sell it at a budget price. If its a totally new game, being just as good as the first, I will gladly cough up $60 for it.
Zepolcire @ Aug 11th 2007 1:40PM
First game was fantastic. Too bad it was so under the radar.
Sidepocket @ Aug 11th 2007 2:14PM
Am I the only one who thinks that bringing it to the Wii with Wiimote Hand-To-Hand combat ALA Godfather would have been better than useless shiny?
Jess @ Aug 11th 2007 2:25PM
I read a feature in PSM, and to me it seemed as though it was a total new game. What a let down the interview lead me to pick up escape from butcher bay, but I guess I should have waited and got Dark Athena for the the PS3. Wait never mind I got butcher bay for $13 shipped on amazon and it was new. I guess I'll rent Dark Athena.
HB96st @ Aug 11th 2007 2:29PM
i never played the game.. I guess I can't play it on my 360, huh??
Christopher Grant @ Aug 11th 2007 2:35PM
Apparently not. The backcompat list doesn't include it. Maybe that's why they're interested in porting it.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm
With a port in the works, something tells me it probably won't ever make it onto that list.
HB96st @ Aug 11th 2007 2:45PM
crap.. so now i have to wait, or buy a XBOX..
Ska Oreo @ Aug 11th 2007 4:36PM
AWWW man. But that's a smart decision cause it would have gotten destroyed by halo 3 and Mass Effect.
ck @ Aug 11th 2007 5:15PM
Nice Simpsons reference, Mr. Grant. Surprised no one caught it. "Where's fallout boy?" One of the classic all time quotes right up there with "No, you got the wrong number, this is ah, 91....2."
Christopher Grant @ Aug 11th 2007 5:43PM
I was surprised it took somebody that long to note it. YAY!
blooh @ Aug 11th 2007 5:19PM
i got the riddick game a couple years ago and am still waiting for the goddamn backwards compatibility.
what the fuck is wrong with microsoft?
Ska Oreo @ Aug 11th 2007 6:29PM
It's not going to happen. Microsoft and Starbreeze(I think this is the developers name) wants you to buy the new remake. It makes sense.
blooh @ Aug 12th 2007 1:37AM
well then i won't. fuck em
Rare Hare @ Aug 12th 2007 3:34PM
That's right, blooh. Cut off your nose to spite your face. Way to go.
Cash @ Aug 12th 2007 3:33PM
What's with the extremely catty article Joystiq? Yes, we all know that Chronicles sucked hard, damn hard, but Pitch Black was awesome, as was Butcher Bay, so why the harshness? If it's because of delays, jeeze it's not like we haven't had to deal with more then a few of *those* in the last few years, so what's the big deal? At this point, most serious gamers know when a game is delayed it is done so it can be polished and perfected. I'd much rather have a game be delayed then released before it's ready so I can waste my 50 bucks plowing through 5,000 bugs.
Zach Isso @ Aug 13th 2007 6:33AM
The final sequel to Riddick is going to be part musical; oh how I want to experience that on a console.
Christopher @ Aug 13th 2007 4:19PM
Nice Simpsons reference... Use those more often!
phhowell @ Aug 14th 2007 12:44PM
Why are we still getting remakes on the PS3? Ninja Gaiden Sigma was great but enough is enough, Sony where are the games beside MGS4 and Killzone 2?
