Weekly Webcomic Wrapup: expected response edition
We tend to exclude webcomics that reference in the wrapup -- issues of bias and all. However, sometimes a person can manage to incorporate Joystiq and humor in the same comic strip. Sometimes. Enter Fanboys Online. We won't include it in the wrapup, but we recommend checking it out. Here are our picks for the week's best game-related webcomic. Be sure to vote for your favorite!

I would have voted for Fanboys.
hvnlysoldr @ Aug 11th 2007 9:46PM
agreed
halogoodday @ Aug 12th 2007 1:45PM
I think you should exclude Fanboys because Scott Dewitt is a douche bag! We bitch about Buckley for the same reasons, lets not be a hypocrites. Besides the comic really started sucking after the Something Awful forums bitched about it and he changed it to please them. Then again maybe it always sucked. Anyway, any "comic" guy who thinks kissing other artists asses is more important than entertaining his readers, doesn't deserve an audience in the first place.
Rich @ Aug 12th 2007 10:35PM
So... you your argument is... he makes the effort to change and try to differ himself from the hundreds of other unfunny gaming webcomics out there, and that makes him... a douchebag? I don't get your reasoning.
While the current arc he's in isn't as funny as previous work, his art HAS improved since the beginning, and he's making a conscious effort to change and improve, as opposed to others who just live off of sub-mediocrity forever.
Robert @ Aug 13th 2007 9:52AM
@Rich
For starters the current arc is not as funny, its just not funny. The DDR arc was stupid, unfunny and lasted forever. Great improvements. The guy has no understanding of story telling and character development. Plus he thinks that a stupid facial expression at the end of a comic constitutes as a joke.
He didn't change for improvement. He changed so that he would be liked by some "famous" web comic people. Buckley might not be liked, but at the end of the day he's still doing it for a living. That's more than I can say for Dewitt and he "famous" people he dropped trow for.
Chrysis @ Aug 11th 2007 6:41PM
Aww man I'm gutted our MGS4 on 360 comic didn't make the wrap-up :( I must say I feel it would likely have beaten out at least one or two of these entries to come in at our usual respectable 7th or 6th place ;)

I don't know, when the point of the comic is proven false within an hour of it hitting the blogsphere, kinda takes the punch out of the swing. And then all you're left with is a soft slapping noise as your foe stares blankly at you, confused as to what you were intending to accomplish.
Keith @ Aug 11th 2007 7:31PM
that comic wasn't even funny
Rare Hare @ Aug 11th 2007 10:44PM
I thought it was pretty damn funny. It doesn't even matter what it was about. The last two panels were just fucking awesome.
Exo @ Aug 12th 2007 1:49PM
No, its just plain not funny.
there is no resemblance to anything having to do with comedy in that strip. the first panel is talking about a news story, and then, the other 2 panels are trying to go off of actually visualizing a cat getting out of the bag.
what part am I supposed to laugh at? not to mention its drawn horribly, which would be a non issue if it was funny, but it wasn't. SO the whole comic kinda collapses on itself.
The only thing the comic proves is as long as you have enough money for a domain, and someone trying hard to draw, you can have an online comic that anyone will look at no matter how bad it is. tehre is like, only 3 well drawn VG strips out of like, 60. ANd no, im not talking stylistic choice, cause thats subjective, I mean well drawn in a technical sense.
Hannibal @ Aug 11th 2007 6:45PM
Wow that VGCats is effing hysterical.
Mr French @ Aug 11th 2007 7:00PM
except.. its not. i have no idea why its in the lead.
bender @ Aug 11th 2007 7:34PM
Com'n, Mr. French, you can't go wrong with poop jokes. VGCats FTW.
Phillip @ Aug 11th 2007 7:54PM
@Hannibal
Indeed. I believe the process is something like this:
Step 1. Create comic around crudeness or crassness.
Step 2. Win Joystiq wrapup.
Step 3. ?
Step 4. Profit!
However, I must say that this is the funniest comic in the wrapup (IMO). It was crude enough to win, but not quite crude enough to turn me off. :)
Brad Lee @ Aug 11th 2007 8:02PM
It's not just the crudeness, there's a good "duurrrr" joke in there too.
I mean seriously, among the "moves," clearly "breath" would be the most important, but that's the one that gets axed.
Also, "The attack was ineffective" is a cleverish nod to "Splash."
I laughed. That's something, considering usually at most I get a mere giggle out of these comics.
B_Bob @ Aug 11th 2007 8:34PM
Heck, VGcats was so awesome I voted for it over my own comic :-P
BPM @ Aug 11th 2007 11:14PM
"You know, when you die, you crap your pants." - Cartman
Connection, maybe?
Mabui @ Aug 11th 2007 11:33PM
I thought it was a good shot at pokemon, and pretty funny to boot!
bigmac375 @ Aug 11th 2007 7:10PM
mine was a close race between vgcats and 2p start, but i put 2p start for the reggie part. dead on.
Retrofied @ Aug 11th 2007 7:15PM
I feel ashamed of myself. I laughed reading VGcats this week.
Phillip @ Aug 11th 2007 7:48PM
So did a lot of people. Despite your bashing, I think VGCats is often very funny.
Retrofied @ Aug 11th 2007 8:37PM
"I think"
hello opinion
Rare Hare @ Aug 11th 2007 10:51PM
Retrofied, you're a douche. VG Cats is consistently funny. The facial expressions on those adorable little kitties are second to none. They really succeed in conveying the emotions of the characters.
Aberu @ Aug 12th 2007 2:16PM
Don't mind Rare Hare, he's an official VGCats fanboy furry cosplayer. Apparently constructive criticism is not openly welcomed by him. Are comics only an art form when it's convenient, AKA holding awards shows and filming self-indulgent documentaries?
Shiro @ Aug 11th 2007 8:25PM
You guys could've included the Fanboys comic!
It clearly says in the last panel that he's reading "Joytiq". I have no clue where to find a site like that, but there is clearly an S in the name of this particular blog.
(Okay, so the first one was "Joystiq", but meh. Minor detail.)
Mr Khan @ Aug 11th 2007 8:27PM
I had to vote for VGcats, it had me rolling
But Penny Arcade came in a close second, it was funny AND true, but so was the Strikers one, except that he's bashing the wrong sidekick for being completely cheap-o, Dry Bones is so irritating with all his cheap-ass moves, it makes me mad
Word of the street. @ Aug 11th 2007 10:56PM
Necessarily evil-I dont get it
Guitar Warrior III-I lol'd a litle but I dont thin it takes the cake
Our helpful guide-Lol
Mass Erect-Sex jokes how original....
Rise above-Lol
Rare candy-Is not as funny as when I first read it yet it I also found the freaking 4 moves per pokemon awful.
Stop the presses!-Hehe
Marathon estomac-Too crude.
Halo 2 is for lovers-Lol.
My vote goes to:F@nboys.
Word of the street. @ Aug 11th 2007 11:00PM
Ops before any grammar nazi says anything yeah I'm aware my post has grammar mistakes so um..I..Um..do?.. it.. At porpoise?..Yeah...
Ok I didn't take my coffee today,sorry.
bosshogx @ Aug 11th 2007 11:34PM
@word of the street
The Necessary Evil comic is only funny if you know about the Omegathon tournament that Penny-Arcade is holding. I got selected for the tournament and this comic is a play off of me frantically trying to find some of the games that were listed.
Hope that helps and next week we go after everyone's favorite franchise to hate.
Markster @ Aug 11th 2007 11:09PM
That was all in all... a terrible roundup.
VG Cats was less terrible than everything else, so it gets my vote.
Even then, it wasn't a particularly good VG Cats.
BPM @ Aug 11th 2007 11:17PM
Digital Double am dead. :S
whymog @ Aug 11th 2007 11:53PM
I think Penny Arcade was the most relevant, but I'm always interested in the PR side of the videogame industry and how awful some of it is. Seriously, why isn't anyone asking Activision just how Guitar Hero 3 has a chance of standing up to the marketing and development behemoth behind Rock Band?
VGCats has always bothered me with its lack of polish and predictable humor, but that's just a personal taste thing, right? It seems to resonate with Joystiq readers.
Word of the street. @ Aug 12th 2007 1:38AM
Well VGcats is about simple videogame humor that just make fun of things and IMO while simple it does a good job at it.You dont have to be alot into gaming like PA to get it.
About GH3,I think it stills holds a chance even when the issues with GH2 (DLC/Lack of multiplayer ETC) pissed of a lot people I believe it still holds a loyal fanboy base.
Nomi @ Aug 12th 2007 1:25AM
Damn it! I wanted to vote for VGcats!
Rare Hare @ Aug 12th 2007 2:39AM
Sooo.. did you?
blooh @ Aug 12th 2007 1:36AM
the gh3 one was the best because it referenced harvey birdman
GUIGUI @ Aug 12th 2007 6:44AM
I would have voted for this one:
http://www.godmodeonline.com/d/20070806.html
(but as it wasn't there, I voted for dueling analog).
Ghen @ Aug 12th 2007 7:04AM
Godmode was funny, is that your comic or a friends guigui or just something you like?
Anyway I voted for VGcats mainly because between eat, sleep, breathe, and videogames... Breathe is -almost- the best choice anyway!
GUIGUI @ Aug 12th 2007 7:16AM
Just a comic that I like.
Aberu @ Aug 12th 2007 2:25PM
Actually that one is hilarious, I would have voted for it if it was in there. They should have had the evaluating person at the end be a big fat black woman, which I'm sure the original person that raised the stink about RE5 IS.
Aberu @ Aug 12th 2007 11:45AM
In the comedy world, what VGCats did is called the "cheap laugh". For some reason you people love the "cheap laugh" so much you vote for VGCats anytime they do something derogatory. Make a reference to abusing the homeless through bumfights! Genius! Eat food and have to go poop so you have unlearn skill to breathe so you can poop! omgz priceless joke moar plx!
Rare Hare @ Aug 12th 2007 1:38PM
What you're doing is bashing the comic simply because it included a basic bodily function. The joke could have been good without that, but nothing else would have fit as well.
It was funny all around, and the starts with the entire scenario. The way it placed Pokémon gameplay into a real life scenario was pretty clever. There's obviously a lot more to the joke than just the use of the word "poop". If that's all you can see, then I guess you need to grow up.
You didn't find it funny. Fine. Just enjoy your comics, and don't condemn the rest of us for our sense of humor.
Aberu @ Aug 12th 2007 2:07PM
I think the satire comic from 2pstart a few weeks ago that made a sort of commentary on comics that get voted into joystiq majority of the time (reference to over-popular game icon/series+cheap laugh element=winning joystiq weekly webcomic wrapup voting) said it best, that's all I'm saying.
