I didn't think Guerrilla would try and raise expectations even higher... they must be getting good results in the lab.

Meh. I think pacman had all of that stuff going on too. Occular occlusion during radiometry on the ghosts. Pre-rendered and post-passed. Booya.

If I understood this properly, they are only using 3 SPUs in the rendering process...leaving 3 still left over? Will these be used at some later point in development, or is no one using all 6 (1 disabled and 1 left for XMB support) SPUs yet?

Seriously I don't think I can get any more psyched for this game than I already am, this game is going to be unreal on the ps3... Halo what?

"1 left for XMB support"
Is it really true that one SPU is locked for xmb, I had read the same as well but there was some other recent news post (apparently source Ninja Theory) that said its rubbish and actual system usage is 5% or less of SPU power.
In fact I recall reading that the Cell was orinally supposed to have only 5 SPUs (which seem adequate for the current level of games) but Ken K asked for 8 (some batty reason about power of 2), and then they saw sense and reduced active SPUs to 7.

They are using 4 SPUs (numbered 0 to 3) with the utilisation levels about 75% for the first SPU and about 50% for the other 3.
Check out slides 46 onwards, where they map out the SPU usage, fascinating stuff, even if most of the technical terms are incomprehensible.
It seems they are using the PS3 as its meant to be - as one huge rendering unit, and the cells carrying a large part of the load typically done via GPU.

"haha halo what? you dick its like only the biggest game in history, too good for ps3 =)"

Another victim of Microsoft's brainwashing. The shame...

On topic, I was surprised to see that both the physics and AI are assigned to the PPU core! They really are using the SPUs just for rendering!

Holy testicle Tuesday! Killzone 2 is coming along nicely.

The PDF really gives a great look inside how game development has become much more complex and time consuming.

P.S. Killzone 2, Halo 3 and Metroid Prime 3 are all going to play just fine on my PSWii60.

It's about the games, not the systems (Corporations)!

agreed so hard Wesley.

but when you go to look at just the games and then your budget, what comes next after consoles and games is preference.

i couldn't stand the first Killzone. it was kinda boring and had a depressing style. i'm sure Killzone 2 will be extremely successful. and i'm pretty sure it will keep it's same dark over tone.

from what i've seen of Halo 3 single player and multiplayer, it looks to be alot funner IMO. the 4-player Co-Op, the option to record your gameplay (single and multiplayer), even messing around in the Forge mode is much like Little Big Planet (a game i am so looking forward to).

i'm not trying to rain on the Killzone parade as i know it will be a hit. just stating my opinion.

i like games and if anyone can intrigue me with why Killzone 2 will be worth my time, then i'll consider picking it up. (i think i wrote this fair and flame free? o.0)

@16: Pretty good I guess, since they are not even using Cell at the maximum (Not at all in fact). It's incredible how much this tiny microchip has in store for us!

THE FRAME RATE AT E3 SEEMED AS SMOOTH AS IF NOT BETTER THAN COD4. BUT WHAT I WANT TO POINT OUT IS HOW FROM THE BEGINING OF THE PS3s LIFE EVERY XBOX 360 YOUTUBE TAPE POINTS OUT HOW BETTER THE LIGHTING AND AMBIENCE IS ON THE THE 360 AND HOW THE PS3 COULDNT PRODUCE THAT QUALITY SAME GOES FOR TEXTURES. I GUESS KILLZONE 2 WILL BE THE FIRST GAME TO PROVE THEM WRONG. ONCE AGAIN SONY SHOULD RELEASE KILLZONE 1 ON PSN STORE WITHOUT THE TERRIBLE GLITCHING IS SUFFERED FROM ON THE PS2, ONLY IF THE PS2 HAD A HARD DRIVE THEY COULD OF FIXED THE GLITCHING LIKE THEY DID IN HALO2(EXAMPLE THE TEXTURES SWITCHING FROM LOW RES TO HIGH RES WAS A NOTICABLE PROBLEM).

@18: The PS3's diplay gamma setting is by default higher than that of 360's, this is why the lighting seems better on it. That is not the case however, because if we could lower the PS3's display gamma the games would look exactly the same. And Oblivion is by far the best example that shows that textures on the PS3 can be of a higher resolution than on 360 without affecting the framerates. Sorry but whatever noticeable difference there is between the games on both system is the developper's fault right now.

@Darkdrium777

exactly. which is why i hate to say it but the crew working on Silent Hill 5 have yet to get it up and running on a PS3. it's still in the 360 because it's the only way they can have something to show to Konomi.

regardless of how powerful the PS3 is, it's up to the developers to understand the PS3 and get the games out.

Firstly, I am sure we can pick up Gears when its on PC - the better, extended version with free multiplayer - and the same will happen with Halo 3.
And if you want online games, both Resistance and Motorstorm offer a great package without the problems such as host advantage, etc that you get with Gears 360.
Secondly, the reason Gears - like Halo 1 before it - got so hyped was because there was no competition, no similar games. Halo 3 is up against Haze and UT3 (both timed exclusives) as well as CoD4, Stranglehold, Timeshift, etc. Tough luck beating this competition, unless you are one of the few million who have no clue about gaming beyond this one title.

"few even are aware of those other games for one thing. "
Indeed. You revealed everything about yourself and your fellow Halo clubmates - who knows about:
CoD4
UT3
Haze (ever heard of Goldeneye? Timesplitters?)
Stranglehold

And of course the sweet lag free multiplayer on PS3 sucks - after all you cant play Halo 3 on it can you :)

I suggest that you should apply your advice to youself and broaden your horizons!

now all they need to do is inprove on gameplay. and AI it looked like they were standing still and wouldn't dogde like halo's AI. overall if they can pull it off i might consider getting a ps3 over 360.

Killzone 2 also proves that ps3 will have great 3rd exclsuive party games because 360 could not play it (the prophacy is coming true. seriously that is what the "Times" said). Also halo 3 looks just like halo 2 and 1(computer)

@18 what are talking about my comment has been deleted once because i wasn totally sold on mass effect. Gameplay looks slow the dodging missles with a jumping tank lame just get a mech. the story sounds great but i dont see why everybody is so hyped about the graphics from all the trailers gears of war is still king in the graphics department. Any game without a series thats actually known for having good games i rather not pump myself up more than i have to including LAIR, Heavenly Sword, and HAZE. i guess 360fanboys saw the truth and got upset. its they keep on selling that dialogue crap like i really want to spend 60hrs(maybe less) talking to people and the character customization like games like fight night R3 didnt do a great job wtf when did it come out. If stop focusing on my name you might see the light.

Ooookay. Anywho...

I like the way the devs set up the G-Buffer in this game. By using the G to store normal info, they are saving more memory, which could be the problem other devs are running into on the PS3. At 36MB, this buffer is looking solid AND small compared to the graphical complexity it's setup to handle.

As a programmer (former) I love to see virtual functions (particularly draw vfs) dropped, and data driven programming used. With that said, the approach screams out to me: "RECURSION!" and that might be a problem down the line. It's hard to debug recursive code, and I'm almost expecting to see some buffer overflows and leaks resulting from this. The game might even have to be delayed or shipped with some strange and hard to find bugs because of it...

I'd like to have seen an spu dedicated to the physics and another dedicated to the ai. But, then again, I'm kinda anal about that kinda thing. Personal preference is all. Still looks efficient! =DD

I so much hope that dynamic radiosity makes it in the game! Lighting will be so much more realistic!

So far, this is looking to be more beautiful then anything witnessed so far on a console. I hope all the feature sets make it in and finally shut some of those nay-sayers up once and for all! =)

Technique Rules! this is a impressive show of it!
while I'm not a Fanboy I am an ex-XBOT the PS3 does have even if slight edge over 360. the CELL,the small psychics sub processor, an the frame buffer help get it done
I hope more Devs in the future make the time to fully utilized the PS3 hardware
it will be interesting to see what crysis an COD4 look like on PS3
