PS3 Poll Police: Is Lair still worth it or not?

sorry to burst your bubble but the 360 is already on 65nm, and it has been RRoDing nonstop, even the Change to 45nm which is what they are moving twoards still wont change the fact that it will stil overheat due to insufficient cooling and inproper placement of peripherals inside the 360

I never planned to pick it up day one and the reviews have just cemented that. There are a lot of things a game can get wrong and still be decent but controls is not something that you can let slide. I might pick this up used after it's gone down to around $30.

Some of my favorite games are the ones that scored around the 6/10 mark. Don't misunderstand me, the 9/10 - 10/10 games are generally excellent but sometimes it's the lesser , often more simplistic or obscure titles I purchase.... why follow the croud! A case in point is Smugglers run 1 & 2, Vandal hearts, Hogs of War, Manhunt. Even GAMESTm gave R:FOM a paltry 6/10 !!! and that is a cracking title, especially the online game.

Personally, I'm not yet convinced that Lair is 'My' type of game and i'm not a Graphics Wh@re.

Saying that, PS3 games need to sell well to attract more developers so.........

I don't know if you really wanted an answer to your question but I thought I'd give you my opinion on some fun games I play on the 360 when I'm not playing Super Stardust HD on my PS3.

1. Dead Rising - Zombies + creative weapons + interesting plot = hours of fun.

2. Earth Defense Force 2017 - It's a bargain price and like playing a movie they'd watch in Mystery Sciene Theatre 3000.

3. Overlord - Take Pikmin throw in some monty python humor and you got Overlord. (Like Lair, this game recieved a 9 from Play magazine)

4. Crackdown - If you ever played gta just to blow up stuff and cause havoc, imagine that but you are also a super hero, throw in some of the best co-op shenanigans in video gaming and you have crackdown.

5. Lost Planet - Amazing landscapes and sense of scale, and though it isn't advertised as a mech game it is probably the best mech game so far this generation.

6. Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend - Many say it's the first good Tomb Raider game since the first couple and I tend to agree. Not only is the game fun to play but it's engrossing story makes you excited for the next game. Consider it a warm up for Uncharted.

7. Viva Pinata - People who haven't played it tend to make fun of it, but it is an extremely beautiful and addicting game. It too has an interesting sense of humor the more you analyze it, you can mate pinatas with their children, watch their mating dance, and then break open the baby pinata with your shovel to the sound of children cheering, then make the parents eat the candy from their child.

8. Call of Juarez - Though it is a fairly straight forward shooter the real star of this spaghetti western is the plot and it's duel protagonist view. Believe me, going into a gun battle with a bible in one hand and a six shooter in the other makes you feel like a character in a movie.

9. Bioshock - (Ok, so this game isn't out yet, but with only 7 days before it is in consumer hands I figure you would let it slide.)
It's the shooter thats not a shooter but is a shooter. An art deco utopia gone wrong (when do they ever go right?) you stumble upon the world of rapture and are quickly put into a position to help decide a genetic civil war. With an advanced ecology of A.I.'s, plasmid power-ups, hacking, moral decisions, and the already iconic Big Daddy this game is well on its way to becoming a huge hit.

10. Call of Duty 2 - I know you have Call of Duty 3 but CoD2's single player is hand's over fist better than 3. Infinity Ward knows how to make a game and it show's in CoD2. (and soon to be seen in CoD4)


11'sies. Mass Effect, it's months off but I would have to commit sepukku if I didn't mention my most wanted game of 2007. A massive intergalactic american rpg from the makers of Baldurs Gate and Knight's of the Old Republic. Jack Bauer in space has been used a lot to describe it so expect plenty of ass kicking.

Oops, Bioware is a canadian company so I guess mass effect is a massive intergalactic canadian rpg. We'll just say its a western rpg.

I must say...I read reviews just to see what the readers score them. Prime example...Darkness. Darkness scored high marks on nearly all the major review sites. So I was expecting a lot from the game...but when I played it. OMFG...that game sucked balls. I so happy that I decided to borrow it from a friend of mine. The whole graphic engine was like something I would play on PS2. Weak ass story...weak ass acting...weak ass graphics...but scores 9.0? They shoveled a lot of BS on readers for that game. But then you have a game like Rainbow 6 that scores less but the game seriously kicks ass. That is the most enjoyable FPS since Unreal Tournament 2004 for "me". I played Halo 2 much too late to really get into it. I won't make that mistake with Halo 3...I have to see what all the buzz is about. Anywho...form your opinions on a game from the average readers and see what they say. IF they likey...check it out. Still on convinced...rent it first. Anywho...I'm falling a sleep at the keyboard...dueces.

I'm definitely going to get this game. How can you trust EGM when they gave the graphics a 5 (or whatever it was). I've seen the graphics from the trailers, and it looks amazing. Sounds like X-Bias.

Yo Lair will be a great game no matter what egm says. Egm has always been anti ps3 they never give any ps3 great reviews. They said that its hard to control the dragon but thats part of how realistic the game is. It's a real animal not airplane. The animal has a mind too just like a disobideant dog you have to learn how to control it and work with it. They also said it dosn't have a radar. Exactly!! It's a animal not an airplane. Once again it shows how realistic this game will be. This one of many new inovative games that shows why we bought the ps3. I'll definetly be buying this game the day it comes out.

I don't trust some of these reviewers, they already have a pre disposition towards the game. Most gamers have played enough games where you can be your own reviewer. The fact that each gamer has to sacrifice 60 dollars worth of money and/or goods to get this game will make you a better reviewer than someone whose reviewing a free copy of the game.

1 up for Highlader. Its true, everyone will nitpick at Factor 5's implementation of everything, just to find witty remarks at downing the sixaxis or adding to the fun of picking on Sony this generation.

However, as opposed to what tomtom said, Ninja Gaiden is not a bastard child =P. It works, and its brilliant - except... the random midfight loads.

65nm is coming, but the price cut already happened, and they won't do another until AT LEAST christmas, when they'll probably do a second cut in response to Sony's probably pricecut.

I probably won't buy Lair. I don't really like motion controls, and if those are the major problem with the game, then I would have a major problem with that.

I'm curious if anyone actually read the EGM magazine review... There is a sidebar where Factor 5 responds to the issues EGM had with the game and pretty much says "these are the choices we made to implement our vision of the game".

My guess is that the build EGM played was "final" but Factor 5 is adding tweaks in response to criticism. We'll know for sure if the shippied version of the game will allow analog flight control and address the other, valid issues raised by reviewers: i.e. the lack of a map and ambiguous mission objectives.

I read as many reviews I can and then average them together, but I dont completely base my final decision on reviews. I more or less check all the reviews to make sure there isnt something terribly wrong with the gameplay, glitches, ect... I mean no one wants a game that cant be controled worth shit... So I will def be checking multiple reviews for Lair to see how it pans out overall before making my purchase and I do have my fingers crossed because I want this title to be good.

Sony fanboys are such hyprocrits. When the review score is high, they crow, when they suck, "anyone who listens to a reviewer is a 'tard". BTW, has anyone actually read the damn review? I have, and Bitter is correct. The things EGM disliked about the game, they questioned F5, who proceeded to defend those choices. We'll just have to see how it pans out.

Pick a story and stick to it, FFS. Play Magazine also rated Bullet Witch extremely high. Play magazine has zero credibility.

Showstopper: I have bitched and complained about the post deletions for some time now. If a gamers pride on their console of choice can't handle critism, justified or not, the gamer needs to get a new life.

Well since 360 fanboys want to play...lets review this list...


1. Gears of War: 4.5 hours long. Great graphics and story...for 4.5 hours. Enough said.

2. Lost Planet: Cool for the first hour, gets old though...cool explosions...

3. Mass Effect: will probably kill, but so will Haze. Hopefully it will be as good as Resistance (which kills everything but Gears, depending on how you feel about 4.5 hour games...and maybe R6...

4. Eternal Sonata: Appeals to Japanese gamers...who can be wierd, not my cup...

5. Forza 2: Uhhh...GTHD

6. Fable 2: The sequal to the most anticipated disappointment possibly ever...right...

7. Huxley (This is going to be a reallllly HUGE game)Sounds like UT...

8. BioShock: Looks good, great reviews, but the same can be said about the Darkness, and we see where THAT one got us...

9. Crackdown: Dude, seriously. Why do fanboys try to push this as a solid title...STILL??? The beta is over guys, we understand...I liked Mercenaries better...I hated Mercenaries...

Now that THAT is over...we'vew seen what reviews can be like: see The Darkness (if you bought this INSTEAD of R6 Vegas...get R6 Vegas. If this will be Rogue Squadron remade then sweet! I LOVED Rogue Squadron. I won't depend on reviews though, no way. Get gamefly and rent, since Blockbuster sucks for PS3 games. As far as the 360 builds being better, thats usually only if you like shiny graphics or rumble. More opinions based on reviews. On the same TV, same games, I usually have to turn down the brightness on my 360 games (Halo 2...well it counts right, it's all I played for the first year, COD3, R6, GRAW, NBA 2K7, Fight Night). Shiny doesn't equal better fellas. But thats what this poll was all about, whether to beleive reviews right?

And for the record, 360 fanboy has deleted a few of my lengthier posts as well. I didn't think these things were screened but only certain posts got deleted. So you guys aren't the only ones to be outcasted from a blog for putting some well thought out (unpopular) opinion down. Its funny that we are hypocrites just because we PREFER the PS3 over the 360. We are all well aware of the short-comings of the PS3. You on the other hand I would classify in the catagory of HYPOCRITE because you constantly praise the 360 yet ever fail to mention its onslaught of defective qualities that it brings to the table. YES the 360 has more games at the moment (how many of these titles are actually good is highly questionable), to me thats where the line ends, after that the 360 is comparable to the PS3 if not worse. The 360 is definately worse in the quality-control area. Dawg, every console fanboy is a critic. You'll hear people like me gawk at awesome reviews that PS3 games get, and refuse to listen to crappy reviews. That's not being hypocritical, that's just having a biased opinion. And this is a blogging site for crying out loud. EVERYTHING is biased here.

I have more opinions like being really excited for Bioshock, but not exactly interested in Mass Effect despite its continuous 9+ ratings.

not getting Lair. i'll save the little money for something i'll be more interested in. but i will say reviews only affect my game purchase only when a significant number of review sources are saying the same thing. if 3/4 sources say a games bad... i'm likely to believe it.

I actually played Lair (GM version).

It's just not good at all. The graphics are good, and there are some elements of gameplay I liked, but all in all it feels slapped together. It really feels a lot like a tech demo.

I know Sony is concentrating on 1st and 2nd party games. They'd better be better than this.

It's hard to put a lot of stock into reviews. Most reviewers have been in the business for a while and are kind of jaded. They often give bigger scores to things that are original whether they're actually good or not. And sometimes they dock points when encountering a new flavor of an old game style. What they don't think about is that most people don't play nearly every game that comes out.

Who cares if Super Stardust is "yet another dual-analog shooter", most people have never played one! Who cares if Smooth Moves is something fairly "original", it still sucks unless you're 8 years old (or drunk).

Anyways, my point is that I don't take much stock in reviews. This poll is stupid too... just because I don't have faith in reviewers doesn't mean I'm going to buy the game anyway. If you can get your hands on a playable demo, then there is only one reviewer that matters: YOU.

It looks like im in the minority here, but I actually put quite a bit of stock in game reviews. Why? because why should I spend 60 dollars of my money to find out that the controls are broken, or the camera is really bad, or gameplay is repetitive.

However I do find it important to read between the lines of these reviews, because just as Lars pointed out, reviewers tend to get a little jaded. And when that happens they tend to forget that fun and innovation are not the same things.

I don't need "exclusive titles" but MLB: The Show and F1 Championship should round out your list of 5, and are just as solid as anything on your "failed to mention" list. Go to 360 fanboy the "showstopper" in regards to bioshock. The first 20 or so posts are about your precious Live crashing (better online support?) and the game being too cartoony. EVERYTHING on the 360 is cartoony. It's almost like Nintendo used to be. I played the first Fable, beat it on both spectrums (extremely bad/extremely good) and it was just ok. Now, name 3 exclusives that were worth a damn when the 360 was under a year old...Chromehounds? Come on dude, you're not talking to someone who doesn't have a 360. Saints Row? Dead Rising? You're fucking reaching now man. All the game you "failed to mention" and most of the ones you did are fucking rentals. And the 3 exclusives for the PS3 crush everything on your list, not to mention Oblivion (GOTY or something) is BETTER on the PS3. You bought your PS3 (if you actually have one) for MGS4, Tekken, Rachet and Clank, GTA, better Madden controls, wireless, bluetooth, no batteries, dependability, you have HDMI capability that you want to use, you want to watch next gen DVDs in the next 5 years (because there wont be another format to do it on), Final Fantasy (which I'm not a fan of), and a host of potential in coming titles that will actually be worth a damn...pwned...I think so...and I've had 3 360s, how many have you been through because of your neglegence? How dare I log onto Live for an update and expect my system to work afterwards. How dare I play for longer than 20 hours on a weekend. (really love Halo) I'm afraid to touch my latest one until Halo 3 releases...
