You might not buy your systems for movies, but a large amount of people who have bought the PS3 have, and a large amount of the people who bought a PS2 did as well. Kthx rebut imo.

What idiot is gonna buy this?

$100 more than a PS3, the HD DVD drive is not even integrated, and sits in a box next door, you can't even use it for games, and the format it supports is going down the pan.

If they sell even one of these, then people need putting down, as they are totally brain dead.

How is this a bad bundle? It's the Elite first of all. Plus the HD DVD player AND lots of movies. Plus the killer game selection?

Plus HD DVD isn't losing the format war. More HD DVD players have been sold than BluRay players.

BluRay is winning ONLY in the amount of BluRay discs/movies that they've sold.

So really sony fanboys calm it down....the war is far from over. I hope HD DVD loses but if BluRay wins I don't plan on buying it. I'll just wait for the next format to spring up.

And Universal isn't the last hold out. I applaud them though for not caving into these arrogant pos sony fanboys.

Nice deal, though I do feel the HD DVD camp is getting a bit desperate. I wish the format war was over so I can finally buy some high def movies.

Wouldn't you say that both camps are desperate, since both offer free movies with the purchase of a player?

(So, if you got a HD-combo drive... could you get 5 free Blu-Ray movies and 5 free HD-DVD movies? XD)

I have the Launch Prem bundle from Costco and an HD-DVD drive. I own 5 HD-DVD movies with the intent to buy more. The only reason I have so few HD-DVD movies is because I am very picky on what movies I will add to my library. I'm not an avid movie collector. Basically, only classics. Like 300, The Departed, etc.

I do not own a PS3 or a BD player yet, so I can not really fairly critique that particular format. I can tell you what keeps me interested in the HD-DVD format though. It's the interaction it provides, and recently, they have been making hybrid DVD/HD-DVD discs. This is a very strong 1-2 combo that I currently enjoy about this format.

Locally, the main store sells out of the Xbox 360's and Wii's very quickly (luckily, they manage to keep the Wii's re-stocked religiously). The PS3 however, does not sell and the same two PS3's they have had on the shelf have been sitting there over a month. They have a huge BD movie library, but everytime I check out the HD movie area, they seem to go untouched. In the HD-DVD area, you have to buy what you want or run the risk of not being able to get the movie you want right away.

In the end, it's all about what you want. In my area for now, it's the 360/Wii and HD-DVD.

As for the 360 not having built in WiFi, I don't see that as a big deal. Being wired is still faster than wireless (for now).

Will BD or HD-DVD win? I think both will go on, but with different purposes. I think that in the short term, HD-DVD will be the multi-media format while BD will be the storage (gaming/PC) format of choice. I don't know about you, but I would sure want the ability to buy a disc still as an alternative to downloads still.

All jokes aside, This is a GREAT deal. -Better than the PS3 and with a better library also! Someone just stuck the knife in Sony's wound a little bit deeper..

it wasnt the price, it was what you were getting? That makes no sense to me. If you are referring to games than that isnt a valid excuse. Its always slow in the beggining. You cant complain about a price of a blu ray player being half the price of a stand alone player, unless of course you get it for games only (which may be in your case) which the moives shouldnt even matter to someone like that than. My point is, no matter what you buy either system for the PS3 offers more than the 360 original release. Now the 360 is offering a good deal as far as technology goes (wireless, HDDVD player etcetera). But here we are again. Looking at spending the same price as a ps3 and getting screwed if you are one of the ones that bought the original released 360. It seems to me MS has gone the route of a PC type release and offering upgrades to it. Its like PS2 and xbox all over again. MS was smart releasing there system with a built in HDD. PS owners had to buy one seperatly and then there really wasnt any support for it. Now it seems MS is offering things as add ons and sony is offering it all at once. Either way you look at it there is an upside (financialy) and a down side (future cost) to both. ALmost everyone I speak to doesnt want a PS3 b/c of the cost which I can understand, but its not like you are paying more than what its (the system itself) worth. The cost of fair.

*and just on a side note. I can go out and buy a 360gig for under $100 right now to add it in my PS3 so really, your are looking at paying under $600 right now for a ps3 with a HDD of 360gigs. (the whole "360" thing is just a coincident by the way :)

That looks like a good deal, although as the $600 playstation seems to have proved, not as many people as hoped want to spend $600, despite it being a 'good deal' for what you get.

On a side note, still no wifi in that bundle.

All right guys, how's that bundle not a good deal? A 120gb of storage, hddvd player, 7 hd movies, a good selection of game for the system + XBL---------> I mean xbox live not PSN. Ps3 with 5blugay movies is a good deal too, but 2 movies less, less games to play and a inferior live service. If you really think about it the bundle on the is better.

LMAO @ "I hate". What a loser.

Anyways this is a really good deal. I support HD DVD and its leading the war in terms of how many HD DVD players have been sold. However its behind BluRay in the amount of discs sold.

Hopefully they'll make a strong push this fall/winter. And I respect Universal for not kowtowing to sony.

It really doesn't matter how many times you post, you're not changing the FACT that (for better or for worse) the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player.

So you can post how many HD-DVD dedicated players have sold versus dedicated Blu-Ray, but you'd be ignoring REAL LIFE, which includes the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player, and that makes for more Blu-Ray players and movies sold. In some circles, people may not have even used the gaming portion of the PS3 yet because they saw it as the most affordable BR player and bought it for their HD home theater set-up, thusly we must acknowledge: The PS3 can be counted as a Blu-Ray player.

I mean, guy, let it go. Everytime you post you talk about Sony Fanboys and hating Sony, and "Sony trixxorz you!" and all that... but you can't seem to understand that YOU ARE THE SAME GUY you complain about, except you root for the 360 and HD-DVD. Wasn't it you who said that you "PRAY hd-dvd wins?" I think it was, guy.

So relax and have some fun readin' the blogs on a nice Sunday...

Personally, my favorite statistic is the attach rate - number of movies per player (game system and standalone). HDDVD attach rate is like 5 times better than BR. I think it mainly has to do with cost: more people are actually using their HDDVD players to watch movies (most probably rent). As 'stiq noted, a lot of people dont even know that ps3 has BR movie capability, so thats why the stand-alone statistic is interesting.

Wow first off these comments are amazing. Half of you don't even know what your talking about. It's great.

I would just like to put my two cents in so I guess I'll start with the fact that who the hell really needs 120GB in there system. I have a PS3 60GB with linux yellow dog, with movies music and game on the hard drive, and I am not even close to using it. Over 10GB are just for yellow dog. I just really don't see the need, or at least for a major selling point. Especially as the way hard drives are going and 1TB are out now, and everyone is talking about having 60GB or 120GB. Just put an external on and you could have how ever much space you want to store nothing.
I guess next would be the format wars. I would just like someone to tell me what HD-DVD has that Blu-ray doesn't. Just a little curious. And for those saying that it is far from over, you are right. I had a DVD player before the original Playstation. But how many people really knew about DVD back then. Back when it was called a Digital Video Disc.
As for the price difference for the PS3 and this bundle it is the same. Remember that the price drop was only for the remaining 60GB PS3's. All orders are now for 80GB models, FYI they include Motorstorm.
To HB96st if your still reading these, the PS3 is totally region free I don't know about the 360, but how many people really go to another region and buy games, movies and such. They go to their local Best Buy, Circuit City or Blockbuster to pick up a game or movie.
Aside from the movie deal, I don't know how anyone would spend money on something that isn't guaranteed to be around in a year. Have it be Blu-ray or HD-DVD. I'll get my PS3 because Sony will continue the games. but as for the movies, I don't know if I could just waste money like that.
As for a general comment on the 360, what the was MS thinking with the Core model. NO Hard Drive they had one in the Xbox why take a step backwards?

And the game libraries they will come for the PS3, just like they did for the 360 a year ago. The fact that I can play all of my PS2 and PS1 games on my PS3 is great. Not something that you can say with the 360. Only some working others not, downloading emulators, not needed.

Well I think I'm done for now. If I think of anything else I might post again. Let me know what you think.

Let's see. Off the top of my head why HD DVD is better. Well it's Region Free! Which means you can buy HD DVD versions of movies that are only Blu-Ray in the US, or not released at all in the US. It Supports more Advanced features like Picture in Picture, that BLu-Ray currently doesn't. Ethernet port is Required to download Extra content.

Do you know that with Blu-Ray, you all are basically Beta Testers? Yes that right because Blu-Ray hasn't even been Finalized until October 2007 if all goes as planned! All the current Stand Alone BLu-Ray players people already have will be worthless when Blu-Ray does become Finalized and it gets the Extra features HD DVD already supported since Day 1, and Ethernet will still be just a Option of Blu-Ray players. None of these systems will be Upgradeable other then the PS3 since it's a whole lot more flexible. Oh and once Blu-Ray is finalized, you get to look forward to the Second Layer of COPY PROTECTION called BD+ that hasn't been used YET. Now your screwed out of ripping your HD movies to put on your HD Media Servers that you can currently do with HD DVD and Blu-Ray, but won't last for Blu-Ray. It'll be far, far harder to crack BD+. Of course Sony wants everyone to go Blu-Ray, they are a Movie Studio owning Company and if they can stop people of ripping Movies, all the better. DVD's are Simple, and the first layer of Blu-Ray and HD DVD isn't much harder.

Oh sure all the stand alone BLu-Ray players will continue to work when the new movies like Batman Begins and the Matrix that's been Delayed waiting for the new Finalized players to be released. You'll still be able to play the main movie, but all the extra cool features, your OUT OF LUCK!!! You don't hear about this little FACT in the BLu-Ray camp do you? Of course not and wait until a whole lot of pissed of people come late this year.

Blu-Ray had to get the drives out there. The PS3 already was released 6 months late. Sony sure couldn't release the PS3 in October 2007, let alone Stand Alone Players. HD DVD would of had a huge head start and the war would have been over before it begin. So Blu-Ray was RUSHED OUT!!! What a joke. I'll never buy a BLu-Ray Player, let alone a BLu-Ray Movie. I'd rather stick with DVD!!!

off the top of my head, as to why blu ray is better.

I could buy the movies I want to on that format. 90% major studio support. Universal will come around when their deal with MS and toshiba is finished. MS/NBC/universal (got to be blind to not see that link)

oh yeah, and disc capacity is higher (30gig vs 50). with BD-50 they can encode the tranfer at a higher bit rate (think 360kb/sec mp3 vs 128). They also go with uncompressed pcm transfers for the additional space, and unless your deaf you can definitely tell the difference.

It's sad when most of your argument revolves around piracy, and how blu rays great security is a bad thing. Well genius.... thats why blu ray has 90% major studio support.

Yeah, a bit too expensive for my tastes...and I JUST bought my 360 earlier today. I got a good deal at Game Crazy, though I think it was by luck.

Right now, if you trade in your PS2 or original Xbox, you get $50 off instantly when you buy a 360 or PS3. Thing is, I think my sales lady messed up! She gave me the $50 off the price of the new system, AND the store credit for trading in my Xbox! Long story short, I got the 360 Premium AND Gears Of War (hadn't played it until today) for $294.21, after taxes and everything.

Good deal, I say!
