Maybe these VC releases will make up for the overly hyped Boogie disaster.

Original.. Metroid.. so... HARD!

I can't WAIT until Super Metroid next week. I might actually pee a little when that download completes.

I really would like to get Super Metroid, but honestly, it's basically paying 8 dollars or so for the right to play it on my television without hooking up my SNES.

Except the memory won't fail as much on the VC.

Or will it?

Does anyone else think that the original Metroid is basically unplayable by today's standards? I absolutely love the Metroid series, but I could never get into this game. Loved Zero Mission however.

Yeah, I think the only gaming "standard" it's missing is an automap.

But then again, look at Overlord.

I guess what I meant was...

It's very hard to control your jumps.
It's very hard to aim.
You can't shoot diagonally, you can't duck and shoot.
All the power-ups say nothing, leaving you to find out what they do.
The levels are extremely repetitive and it's basically impossible to navigate without drawing your own map.

That's the way large 8 bit games were though back in the day. Back then the manual was very important. Things like Ninteno Power were helpful also. Now days games teach you what's going on and give you tons of information.

Look at the original Final Fantasy. You had no idea if the weapon or armor you were about to purchase would equip on your Red Mage or not... but the game came with a world map and an item list. The remake of Final Fantasy for PSP now the game tells you what the classes can and can't use.

I like the original Metroid being difficult and a lot of maps to remember. Beating it gives you a larger sense of satisfaction.

Rad I totally agree with you. It was obviously the restrictions of the technology of the times, and video games have come a long way since then. Good thing, because looking back that sh*t SUCKED sometimes. The original Metroid is too hard and too clunky to play these days.

Not being able to shoot diagonally FTL!

@Radicoon

Basically, the only thing I can agree with you on there is the repetetiveness of the levels and the lack of a map. The others I don't agree with. It's not hard to figure out what an item does, and I actually like the physics inthe original Metroid better than the physics in Zero Mission.

I won't be buying Metroid due to already having it in Zero Mission. Though I am sadly tempted to buy it so I can always have it on my Wii. I just hope they keep Justin Bailey and NAR PASSWORD.

Zero Mission was a disgusting rush job that needlessly created plot holes and had the worst final boss of the series.

Oh man, Shining in the Darkness!!! Finally! I've been waiting for this since Sega announced it was coming a few months ago. Would be nice if they bring the rest of the Shining series now. Outside of that, not much I'm looking forward to on the VC. I'll pick up Metroid and Super Metroid next week to be sure, but not sure what to get after that.

What I've just been wondering is; how does Samus's body survive being contorted like that? (I think) The diameter of that ball is less than that of her femur. Not to mention muscle, fat, cartilage etc...

"Space Pirate Log 20X6

We've been trying to retro-engineer the Hunter's weapons to use them against her. Although we are making progress we are unable to replicate her mysterious Morph Ball abilities. All subjects have been crushed. It is recommended not to pursue that yet."

And in Hunters there was that Space Pirate who had the cannon alt and the bio-weapon who had an alt as well.

Its a magical/technological artifact. She isnt' rolling into a ball so much as she's converted to energy with a ball forming around it.

Or something.
